Arrak

"Experimentation is the essence of life."

Bellworks Co-Founder | Metallurgist | Scientist

Personality

Out of the three founders of the Bellworks, Arrak is the only one who really seems to enjoy being in charge. If he had his way the Bellworks would constantly be experimenting with new discoveries from around Sornieth, a practice he strongly believes would keep production up-to-date and innovative. While he respects the old ways of doing things and the traditions that he and his friends grew up in he would like to introduce the younger generations to the new ways and different thought processes.
He tends to be courteous when he chooses to speak to people, often to the point of awkwardness. A lot of the time he is a silent observer, and like Uskir, he would rather let others make their own mistakes rather than step in and intervene. However, his reasoning behind this is completely different from hers and has been a point of contention between them in the past. As long as it doesn't affect him or the work that he does he doesn't care what happens. To anyone.

Out of all of the dragons in the Bellworks he is by far the least curious. For him out of sight is out of mind. If there is a locked box or a locked room he acts as if it doesn't exist. He doesn't care what is living in the mist at the base of the cliffs or deep inside the dead lava tubes that make up their home. His experiments are driven by completely other motivations- namely whether or not there is a risk associated with one of them and whether or not it will bring him more power or recognition within the Bellworks.

Dragons with problems would do well to avoid consulting with Arrak, because the first question out of his mouth is usually "Why should I care?" and he loses interest in conversations of that nature very quickly. He holds no loyalties except to the Bellworks, and if it serves his purposes he will throw anyone under the bus either purposefully or through omission.

In spite of this he does have his good sides. He is very close to Sunstone, who has been a good influence on him and has gotten him to open up and be less distant toward others. He still doesn't really think their problems should bother him but he's learned how to be more sympathetic in some cases, and to be more observant of how others are behaving in order to have more appropriate responses to them.

"Sometimes it seems like all we do is the same thing each and every day. Get up. Feed everyone. Switch shifts. Cast bells. There's more to all of this than just casting the bells! We should be trying out different formulas, mixing up the alloys, perfecting a new pitch! We could be rolling out a whole new kind of bell if the others weren't always tied up in their exploring and polishing. Doing the same thing day in and day out is making us stale."
-From the personal journals of Arrak

History

Arrak came to the Ashfall Waste as a Guardian, originally. He had grown up along the coast and had left home to seek out his charge when he ran afoul of a clan whose territory he was passing through and after a series of unfortunate events he found himself a very lost and very tiny Fae. He spent a long time making his own way by doing various small, very basic, apprentice tasks for anyone who would let him work and he had to relearn how to do everything in his new body.

The home he grew up in had used strictly utilitarian forges- they produced nothing that they did not need and none of their work was innovative or decorative in any way. So he became fascinated by the variety of ways that metals could be combined and used by those who held the knowledge of how these things worked. He continuously went from smith to smith, learning from others who had mastered the techniques and styles that interested him and coming to create his own.

He met Uskir at the forge of an elderly bellsmith who was eager to pass on his knowledge to a younger generation. Bells had fascinated Arrak since he was a hatchling- the variety of shapes and sounds they made, the way some were plain and others were beautifully decorated- he wantd to know how to do that! He wanted to learn how to make the perfect bell. He wanted to find a sound that would resonate with him.

On the verge of finding something groundbreaking he and Uskir, who had been joined by Chantico, were uprooted and thrown into confusion when they arrived at the bellmaker's forge to find him gone and the forge destroyed. Having lost all of the work and all of his notes, Arrak decided to cast his lot with the other two and began wandering with them, trying to find their place in the world.

After the disaster with being the apprentice to the bellsmith, Arrak changed the way he did his research. He began to be more secretive about what, exactly, he was doing. Moving from the edge of the Hearth and into the Molten Scar opened up more opportunities for him to try out new kinds of alloys, incorporating metals from the areas surrounding the relocated Bellworks.

The Blacksand Annex has been the most useful place that the Works has been built, at least as far as he's concerned. Uskir and Chantico have talked about how it's safer than the other places, more fortified or something, but it also has the advantage of having veins of all the common bell metals handy in addition to more unusual types.

He's found a decent partner in Sunstone, and is happy with the hatchlings he's had with her, but he still holds a flame for Uskir who was the mother of his first clutch. Like her, his children haven't ever been too attached to him and many have gone off to join the Flamecaller's forces. He is much more tolerant of Mogha's bug hunting and disguise-making than Uskir, believing both to be rather harmless in the long run.

Uskir's interest in Miths and the fact that she keeps bringing them back bothers him. He would just as soon leave them where they came from, especially after overhearing her tell some of the others that she wants to have a Mith army to take down and storm whatever is living deep under the current lair. The margins of his research notes have become less about his thoughts on the research and more about his irritation with Uskir and the beings she hauls back.
