Chantico

"If you never try you'll never succeed."

Trainer || Apprentice Bellsmith || Bellworks Co-Founder

Personality

While Chantico is a co-founder of the Bellworks, she's content to take a minor role in the day-to-day affairs of the collective. A courteous and rather quiet Coatl, she dveloped a very solid friendship with Arrak and Uskir early on. Because Uskir and Arrak are commited to making this work, she is too. While she may look cuddly and inviting Chantico feels that dragons grow best when they have to deal with their own problems, and many young dragons have made the mistake of going to her for a sympathetic listener only to find out how mistaken they are later.
In spite of her unsympathetic attitude toward others, Chantico is a patient and observant teacher. She will help youngsters work through problems but they have to do the legwork on their own and they can't expect to lean on her for answers, especially in the coliseum.

She is habitually polite even when she can tell that another dragon is frustrated with her, and it is this calmness that has brought her as an unwilling mediator in many of the council disputes. When she isn't training or helping out in the council chambers she tends toward solitary behaviors and wanders alone in the chambers beneath the inhabited sections of the lava tubes. If she gets too bored or overwhelmed at the Bellworks itself she will go off on her own to hone her skills.

It's not unheard of for Chantico to take risks, especially when she's training a new arrival alongside another experienced dragon. She tends toward pessimism even when she knows she can easily win a fight, and as a result is always pleased when things work out the way she wants them to. She's not nearly as interested in things as some of the other members of the Bellworks, and she is seen as generous when she's really just trying to pass what she thinks of as junk off onto other dragons to deal with.

"I will teach you how to fight. I will teach you how to heal. I will teach you how to survive. Whether you go on to help the Bellworks or venture out to fight the forces of the Shade, how you use what I will teach you is up to you. Good or evil, selfless or selfish, your path is nothing but your own and I am only here to get you on your feet."
-From Chantico's admittance speech for new trainees

History

Chantico was a wandering dragon in search of answers to the origin of her breed. Her journey began in the Starfall Isles, and she traveled alone to learn more about the Flamecaller and the Ashfall Waste. When she arrved she became fascinated by the way the metalsmiths in the area seemed to be able to craft beautiful things out of lumps of formless metal, so she decided she wanted to know more about that.

She had settled in as an apprentice to an older Coatl, a bellsmith, who had two other apprentices at the time. This was where she met and befriended Arrak and Uskir, the three of them often furiously passing notes to one another as the Fae began teaching her how to speak draconic. After many false starts and failures, Chantico can now speak it fluently, although she still prefers speaking and writing Coatl.

Her first job with the Bellworks was to sand, buff, and polish finished pieces and make them ready for sale. She had tried to follow along with the casting processes that Uskir and Arrak used but it never panned out and hr attempts were ceremoniously melted down again and used for other projects. After the three of them lost their mentor it became clear that they would have to get stronger and more focused in order to take on an independent operation. The coliseum was where Chantico really blossomed, and she felt more comfortable training than she did near the heat of the forges that drove the Bellworks.

Her love of training became clear after she had finished helping Phaon learn the ropes. While he tod her she seemed to be a bit cold for an instructor, he admitted that her methods were efficiant and that her help had gotten him to understand things he'd never thought of before. Shortly after she worked very hard, retraining herself and practicing strategies through dry runs before she finally settled on a permanent method.

While she's had a few nests with a couple of different partners Chantico looks at it as more a duty to the Bellworks and not so much as something she enjoys. Hatchlings are too small to take into the coliseum with her, and she's not very good at relating to or comforting them. After a disasterous appointment watching over the creche it was agreed that she would be removed from any direct involvement with the worker's young ones.

It's unclear whether or not Chantico keeps actual journals. Most of her writing consists of long lists of what appears to be names and numbers in a scret code in Coatl. Sheafs and sheafs of paper are left in plain view in her sleeping quarters, so she hasn't gone to great efforts to hide whatever she's doing from anyone. Some members of the Bellworks are suspicious that she is up to no good.
