How long...?

How long has it been...?

Too long.

A dragon who was tricked by someone they thought they could trust, a loved one. Makai got cursed thanks to the dragon he once considered his grandfather, but who turned out just wanted to use him to get rid of his own curse.

The curse of immortality.

It might not sound so bad at first. Hey, you get to experience all your favorite things forever! Who wouldn't want that? To be eternally young?

Well... once you realize that everyone around you ages while you stay frozen in time, the same as ever... once you realize everyone around you dies, and you will be forgotten...

It's not so great. Makai didn't ask for it, and still curses his own naivety. He's been alive for so long that he doesn't know anyone anymore; just a lonely traveller always in search for a way to break his curse.

He didn't want to trick anyone, like the old man had. It wasn't fair, to bestow that kind of burden upon someone, to make them trust you, only to stab them in the back for your own, selfish needs. It's not like Makai didn't consider it, after some time, but...

No.

Usually, Makai didn't bother with making connections. His only wish was to die, and even if he didn't, his friend would surely die before him, and he didn't want that.

Sybil was a bit of an accident.

He'd first heard of the Witch's Heart from a greedy businessman, overhearing the conversation. A gemstone that could, supposedly, grant any wish.

Perhaps it could even grant his wish for death.

His travels looking for the Witch's Heart were what led him to meeting Sybil.

At first, he didn't think much of her. She seemed to be a bubbly woman with too much lust for life. Too positive, too kindhearted. Ditzy. Someone who would easily fall prey like he had, once upon a time.

Under the surface, however, he would quickly find out that Sybil was smart, resourceful. Powerful, even. An aiding force who refused to let life get her down.

She was also the bearer of the Witch's Heart... and taking would mean killing Sybil.

At first, he wanted to. He really, really wanted to. Finally, his suffering would be over, he would be able to go, to die in peace... finally, no more wondering how much longer he'd have to live, when he'd finally go crazy.

He couldn't do it.

How could he? How could he kill someone for such a selfish desire? What kind of person would that make him, to kill someone for a chance at a wish?

He liked Sybil. He genuinly liked her.

Someone like her deserved to live.

So, instead, he decided to become her companion. An ally, someone who could help her when she needed it. A friend.

He'd protect her until she died from natural causes, and in return, she smiled and told him she didn't mind if he used her Witch's Heart for himself, at that point.

Thus, Makai devoted himself to Sybil.
