Theme Song: Battle on the Breachmaker

When a shadow moves across the wall in a strange shape, mothers tell their scared hatchlings that it's only the moonlight through the trees outside, only the shadow of a passing dragon's wings. But some dragons know better, and they hold those they care about close as they watch the out of place shadow carefully. As well they should, for sometimes a shadow is actually a Shadow.

Sanguine is one of those strange creatures, a Shadow. Although he looks almost like any other dragon most of the time, he has the ability to transform into a formless creature of smoke and shadow, intangible, and nearly invisible in the shadows save for his glowing red eyes. He seems to be able to melt into the shadows themselves like this, popping up again anywhere another shadow touches. No one is entirely sure quite what his ability is, or what it makes him. Is it a gift from the shadowbinder, or a curse from the lightbringer, or some arcane experiment gone wrong? Is he even a dragon at all, or is the shadow he becomes his true form? Some dragons in the lair even say that he looks slightly different every time he coalesces back into his solid form.

True to his name, Sanguine possesses another ability, to manipulate blood. He can't be hurt in his shadow form, but should he choose, when hurt as a dragon, he can stop his bleeding entirely, and convince the blood to quickly clot around the wound. More impressive, and the ability he chooses more often to use, is that he can use it as a weapon. His or some other's blood, both answer to his hand, but the iron in the blood gives his weapons a devastatingly sharp edge. More than one enemy who thinks they have him beat, wounded and backed into a corner, have met their end thanks to this. He keeps this ability more hidden, to play as his trump card when vanishing into the shadows isn't possible.

Formidable as he seems, Sanguine is neither mysterious hissing monster or blood-craving barbarian. He possesses a calm, centered demeanor that seems to spread that calm to others around him. He is extremely serious, considering everything carefully before he speaks. In fact, he prefers not to speak at all most of the time. Although he is an expert at covert activities, calm, collected, and competent, he is quite shy at home. He has something of a reputation for being aloof and mysterious, because he rarely speaks conversationally to anyone, and almost always leaves as soon as he finds himself in another's company. Women in particular fluster him beyond words, and he has to make a hasty escape before they see the spreading blush he hides under his hood. Despite this, he has a reputation as being a good listener and mediator, because even though he doesn't speak, something about his impassive face and outward calm gives the dragons talking to him an easier time seeing both sides of an issue, or coming up with some new insight. This makes him sought out more often than he'd like, much to his chagrin.
