Notes~

  • clan treasurer
  • Phoenix was once a talented dancer and mage, combining music and magic in feats no one had seen before, but after a humiliating failure at a showcase, he quit performing forever
  • he's deeply afraid to fail so took up a boring job looking after the clan's finances and money
  • though Phoenix fell head over talons for Daybreak and often practices dancing with him, he still refuses to perform for a crowd
  • secretly, he wants to dance and show off his magic in front of an audience again, but he's too afraid of embarrassing himself

Lore~

The mundane task of counting.

Counting.

One, two, three.

Coins let out metallic rattles as he deposits them into the burlap sack hunched by his desk. Counting some more. A shallow breath, more of a sigh than a willing intake of air. In the dreary dark cavern he calls an office, Phoenix leans over his wooden work desk and counts. That’s all he does.

Count.

Four, five, six.

Phoenix deposits the bag into the vault with a heavy thud and returns to his desk to sketch out the budget for the next month. He glances dully at his own claws while doing so. At the beautiful silk sash Daybreak had given him. Remembering the only times in his life where his heart was full of passion and fun.

The first time, he was young. He remembers so clearly the joy he found in performing wild and beautiful acts of fire magic alongside complex and mystical dances. Phoenix was the top mage and dancer in his entire clan’s yearling brood. His parents were proud of him, constantly showing him off for the rest of the Ashfall Waste to see. During a region-wide showcase of talented young performers, how could they not sign him up? It was his one chance.

One.

Phoenix sets his jaw as he continues scribbling out numbers. Continues remembering what made all that passion disappear and crumble into this gut-wrenching petrification of failure. The beautiful satin stage curtains going up in walls of orange flames as he stumbled and the jeering and laughter of a thousand voices. A pair of judges pointing their claws down, two distinct marks of rejection.

Two.

The firelight catches his bright orange eyes with the glow of the torch across the room. Midway through working out this month’s budget, Phoenix loses himself in the flame’s gentle flickering visage. Feeling the only chance he gets nowadays to feel that spark of himself again.

Dancing. Talons embracing Daybreak as Apollo plays his harp. A cheerful, jovial sound as the pearlcatcher and skydancer twirl around one another in an extrodinary display of spinning silks and ornate costumes. Complicated steps, each in tune to the beat of the song. Aside from the few members of the clan who are also dancing, there is no audience. There are only the beautiful crimson eyes of Daybreak. So bright and staggeringly brilliant that Pheonix loses himself in them at once.

Phoenix, in that brief moment of joy, that brief moment of forgetting his failure and his fear, lets loose three crackling bolts of purple flame. They dance in the sky as Daybreak and Phoenix dance below. Daybreak’s awe-filled smile reaches up to the spell and back down to Phoenix again as the skydancer continues the graceful dance.

Three.

Phoenix is someone else when he dances with Daybreak. Able to reclaim that beautiful spark of life that once burned so brightly in his heart. That smoldered with a painful failure.

But Daybreak cares not for that humiliation. He only cares to dance with the dragon he loves. Only cares for Phoenix’s happiness.

Phoenix is once again sitting in that rickety wooden chair and mindlessly writing out numbers. Daybreak is planning the preparations for the Trickmurk Circus almost eight months in advance, but he asked Phoenix to get the numbers together. The skydancer also asked if Phoenix would dance with him. A showcase for the clan.

As much as Phoenix loves him, of course the answer was no. As much as Phoenix adores dancing by his partner’s side, there’s no chance he will perform in front of a crowd ever again.

Zero.
