SHADOWS AND TEETH

A STORY OF MAXX

"I tend to watch silently from the shadows. You learn a lot more that way." -Sherrilyn Kenyon

>> story written by dragonglimmer <<

Maxx scanned his eyes across the collection of dragons in front of him as he sipped from his cup. They didn't notice him looking, not really - he had chosen a secluded corner to commence his observations, the shadows partially hiding him from the crowd. The clinking of glasses, blended with the sound of dragon laughter, resonated throughout the clearing. Dragons were everywhere. Every shape, size, and color... so many to choose from. Maxx took another sip as his eyes landed on a small, gray fae. His frills were flaring enthusiastically as he gestured with his tiny hands to a skydancer in front of him. He was wearing a long, fancy coat, leather shoes, and a couple of rings that trailed wisps of magic through the air as he spoke. Hmm, Maxx thought. An ambassador, perhaps? Or a... collector of strange items? The fae suddenly held out his hands to the skydancer. Maxx tilted his head curiously as he watched the dragon twist his wrists in a complicated pattern, and then-

A sorcerer, then, thought Maxx. Quite unfortunate. The fae had conjured a pile of shimmering gems that he held in his palms, showing them off to the skydancer. They had a slight tint of magic about them that normal gems didn't usually have - Maxx had learned to recognize signs like that. He was an expert in recognizing fake, conjured, or otherwise fabricated currency. Dragons had tried to dupe him with counterfeit treasure for as long as he had been in the trade business.

Sorcerers were dangerous, though, and Maxx didn't want to create any sort of deal with a dragon that could conjure magic in the blink of an eye. He moved his gaze away from the fae, once again starting his search. He was looking for dusty claws, a bookish pair of spectacles. A few ragged scrolls tucked away in a bag, maybe. A large tome, or a belt of odds and ends. A ruffled appearance, an outfit that had the look of being quickly thrown together with lack of thought for style... there.

The female coatl was walking slowly through one of the garden paths that wound through the glade, her wings tucked close to her sides as she inspected a small scroll. She neglected to pay attention to where she was going and nearly slammed into the trunk of a tree; but at the last second, she looked up, yelped, and jumped sideways, inches from an unfortunate meeting between the wood and her snout. She sprawled on the ground, her scroll flying from her talons as she landed with an oomph upon the grass. What a perfect opportunity, thought Maxx. He pushed up from where he was sitting, dusted off his coat, and strolled over to the coatl, weaving between numerous dragons as he made his way over.

She was hurriedly picking up her scroll, along with a couple other odds and ends that she had dropped, when Maxx arrived. He waited patiently for her to notice him as he stood quietly, observing her, learning as much about her as he could in the few moments that he had. She was wearing a dress - it looked to be of sylvan make - along with a satchel slung across her hips, little golden sandals, and a widebrimmed hat. The apparel didn't match at all. It was utterly tasteless.... just what he was looking for in this type of dragon. He had learned to recognize signs of possible clients, and bad fashion sense was a disturbingly common trait possessed by many of his customers.

Her colors were soft, unlike the majority of coatls he had seen in his lifetime. Her wings were a warm ivory, shot through with darker streaks of caramel. Her neck and tail were a shade of calm blue, and the swirls by her ears were a deep, glimmering chocolate. He hadn't caught a glimpse of her eyes yet, but he was guessing Water flight, maybe Earth. As she finished picking up her dropped items, she looked up, saw Maxx, and promptly dropped everything in her arms as she jumped in surprise. He had to suppress a chuckle as she moaned, anguished, looking down at her belongings once again scattered across the path. She glanced back up at Maxx, forgetting her items in a moment of intrigue as she inspected him. When she spoke, her voice was friendly, curious, a bit out of breath. "Can I help you, sir?"

Maxx smiled pleasantly, adopting his I'm just another friendly dragon looking for a chat persona. "Oh, no, I need nothing in particular. I only saw you reading your scroll and was quite curious as to what it was. But it seems I have caused you to instead deposit everything you own upon the ground," he chuckled. The coatl flushed, her blue coloring deepening to indigo. She opened her mouth to speak, closed it, and then opened it again, flustered. It seems she is easily ruffled. I'll have to keep that in mind.

"I... oh, no, no, it wasn't your fault at all. It's simply... my... I'm very clumsy, you know," she stuttered. "I seem to be tripping over my own feet at every opportunity. It's a very unfortunate thing, really. I've lost a lot of items, dropping them or flinging them around after I land on my snout. May I ask your name, sir?"

"Maxx," he purred, smiling charmingly at her. "Let me help you with that." He bent over beside her and began to pick up her things, handing them to her. "And you are?"

She smiled gratefully at him as he handed her the scroll, a little pouch, a glossy shard of obsidian. "I'm Bethaline. You can just call me Beth. Thanks," she said as he finished picking up her things and offered her a paw. She grabbed it, heaving herself up, and busied herself with stashing her valuables in various places about her person. Maxx watched with muted interest as she slipped the pouch around her neck, the obsidian in a pocket inside her dress. She caught him watching her and flushed again, her claws fluttering nervously at her neck. "Ahem... sorry, I have... a lot of pockets." Maxx laughed. "No matter, I have many hidden compartments as well. Care to take a stroll? You can practice walking straight, instead of smashing into tree trunks," he teased. Beth smiled, her large brown eyes crinkling endearingly at the corners. So she is of Earth, then, mused Maxx. I suppose she has the look of it, though I wasn't quite sure at first. "Sure, we can take a walk," she said. "I like this path. It leads into a nice little clearing full of black tulips and moonflowers. I go there a lot... usually to get away from other dragons, but you don't seem like bad company, so I don't mind you coming with me."

Maxx grinned. "Splendid. Let's get on, shall we? Watch where you're going, dear," he said as Beth turned, nearly tripping over a small stone statue by her foot. "By the Plaguebringer, you weren't lying when you said you were clumsy." Beth laughed, easily this time. "Nope. One hundred percent the most clumsy klutz you've ever met." She stepped carefully over the aforementioned statue, turning to look over her shoulder as Maxx watched her. "Coming?" He blinked, slightly put off, as he drew his eyes away from the entrancing shimmering of her wings. "Ah, yes. Coming. Sorry." Stop getting distracted by the prettiness, and focus on the money to come from this, he scolded himself, stepping up beside her as they started to walk further down the path, away from the rest of the dragons.

They walked for a few minutes in comfortable silence, the chirping of the crickets in the surrounding forest creating a soothing symphony. Maxx watched Bethaline closely, examining how she walked, what she looked at, how she smiled when she saw a fluttering butterfly or a glowing firefly flare in the waning sunlight. He was simply observing, of course. Observation was necessary to gather proper information on clients.

After a little while longer, she sighed happily, turning to him. "Aren't the flowers so beautiful? The light seems to give them this pretty glow. I love walking along this path." Maxx smiled back at her, almost without meaning to. "Yes, they are indeed. Though you, my dear, outshine their beauty a hundredfold." Bethaline blushed, letting out a nervous giggle. "Ah... um... well, thank you. That's very nice of you. What is your trade? You have the look of a... well, ah, I don't know, actually."

Yes. The perfect opportunity, thought Maxx. "I work as... well, you could say, an artifact hunter. I have quite the collection." Bethaline's eyes lit up. "Earthshaker, really?! So do I! I'm an archaeologist - I love artifacts, too!" So I guessed right. Good. This is good. "Really?" Said Maxx, adopting a surprised expression. "What a coincidence." Bethaline grinned at him. "I didn't get your name, by the way, mister charming." Maxx hesitated for a moment. He almost never gave his name to his clients, for... reasons. But Bethaline seemed different. And the artifact he planned to give her only had a slight curse of unluckiness embedded inside of it, as far as he knew. So maybe... maybe she would never know what he had done. Maybe he would see her again, and she could know his name without there being any danger of discovery.

"Maxx. My name is Maxx."

"I like that name," said Bethaline, tipping her head and smiling again, her eyes crinkling. Oh, Plaguebringer, stop doing that eye thing. It's too endearing. "Thank you. I like yours, too," replied Maxx. "Why, thank you! Say, do you have any artifacts on you that I could see? I haven't brought any with me, and I haven't seen something ancient and legendary for a couple days. I need my fix," she joked. Oh, Beth. You just walk right into the trap, don't you? "I do, indeed. One moment." Maxx stopped walking and Beth turned to face him, excitement clear on her features. He reached into one of his coat pockets, pulling out the cursed talisman.

It was a crystal ball, made of pure, blue tourmaline. It glittered in the sunset, sparkling like an ethereal shard of magic. Beth let out a small gasp, her eyes widening. "Oh... oh, it's so, so beautiful..." She looked up at him. "Could I hold it, for just a second? Please?" Maxx held out the globe. "Here. Don't drop it," he said teasingly. She took it gingerly and held it in her palms, stroking one finger along it as she watched the crystal's facets shimmer. He saw the admiration, the want in her eyes, and took his chance.

"It is very valuable... but I'll let you have it for a few gems, if you have any on you. My gift to you." She gaped, looking up from the artifact to stare at him. "Really? Seriously? You would do that for me?" Maxx nodded, unable to speak, fearful he would ruin his mask, his disguise. The smile lit up her whole face - Plaguebringer, she needed to stop smiling - as she carefully transferred the globe to her left talons, digging in her satchel with her right for a moment before pulling out a large pouch. The sound of gems clinking against gems rang from it as she held it out to him. "Would this be enough?" Maxx took the bag, not even looking inside it as he slipped it in his coat. "Yes, of course. Thank you." She squealed in delight. "Thank YOU! Ahh!"

She looked back down at the tourmaline globe almost reverently, holding it in her claws like it was the most beautiful treasure in the world. She admired it for one more moment, and then looked back up at Maxx, her eyes smiling into his, trustingly, gratefully. "Thank you so much. It's gorgeous." A twinge of guilt rose up in his stomach, but he pushed it down. It was done. There was no turning back now. He smiled back at her, albeit weakly. "No problem at all, dear. Enjoy it. Shall we go back to the party now?"

Beth nodded, carefully placing the artifact inside of the satchel slung on her hip. "Let's go." Maxx nodded back at her stiffly, and without waiting for her to start walking, he strode ahead. He had never felt this way about selling off an artifact to some unsuspecting customer. He needed to get away, needed to forget about her. Her and those beautiful eyes...

"Hey, wait!" She called, laughing. "Maxx, wait up!" Her voice resonated with concern as he only started to walk faster. Away, away, he needed to get away. "Where are you going? Maxx? Is something wr-"
Her voice cut off suddenly, and Maxx felt a whoosh of pressure behind him, almost like a whirlpool had emerged and was swirling the night air into its depths. A surge of dark magic tickled at the edges of his senses, and Maxx froze, his heart skipping a beat. He whirled around as the pressure vanished, along with the tickle of magic. The path behind him was completely empty. Bethaline was nowhere to be seen.

His ears went back as both unease and slight panic started to well up inside of him. Where had she gone? What had just happened? He swallowed, backing up slightly as he looked at the spot where she had been standing just a moment ago, now empty. He opened his mouth to speak, considered the risks, and called out anyway. "Hello? Beth...?" He said, quietly, cautiously. His ruby eyes scanned the path, the trees, the bushes, the flowers. Not a sound stirred the silence. It was completely quiet and peaceful. Maxx suspiciously inched his paw closer to his cutlass, sheathed at his hip. A slight breeze blew over his face as he scanned the path, twice, thrice. Nothing moved besides the swaying of the shrubbery in the wind. And then...

A ghastly screech pierced through Maxx's ears like a hot iron poker, and a mass of twisted shadows, glimmering eyes, and glowing magic materialized in front of him. With a gasp of shock, Maxx stumbled backward, his feet scrabbling for a hold on the grass as the thing screeched again, louder this time. His claws reached for his sword; he fumbled desperately at the hilt as he stared with wide eyes at the abomination.

It didn't have any distinguishable body structure; it was a globby mess of darkness, shot through with glowing lines of red and amber light that pulsed as it started to rise up toward the sky, towering above Maxx. He stared in horror as it seemed to grow bigger, developing jagged lumps and globs that looked like... wings?

Wings with ivory feathers.

Oh, Bethaline... what have I done?

The thing roared, and the realization of what - who - he was facing crashed down upon Maxx. Her scream sounded both anguished and furious at the same time; he looked up at her, hovering above him, with desparing eyes. She seemed to regard him for a moment; and though she had no discernable face, he had the sense that she was looking past his face and straight into his soul. He swallowed, talons shaking, and spoke, his words a quiet murmur.

"I'm so, so sorry..."

She froze, the broken, jagged wings trembling. A moment passed, two... and with a sound that seemed almost like a sob, a small globe dropped from the depths of her shadowy body. He traced it with his eyes, watching the tourmaline glitter as it fell; watching as it hit the ground, shattering into millions of broken pieces. As soon as the artifact hit the grass, the shadowy beast went berserk, screeching over and over again. It writhed, swirling into a deadly tornado... and plummeted straight toward Maxx with deadly intent.

As the terror that he had created dived down upon him, Maxx readied his sword, his claws, and his wits. This thing was not Bethaline anymore, and if he did not fight... he would die. The massive creature screamed, ghostly talons outstretched as it reached to rend his soul; and as Maxx responded with a roar of his own that shook the trees, dragon and monster met in a whirl of shadows and teeth.
