Catalpa has lived in many places until settling in Himmelstad recently after moving from Peripeteia, a neighboring clan. Vaer has lived many past lives and has taken many forms and names but has since begun losing his memories as time goes on and he ages day by day.

All he can remember clearly are his ancestors, whom he tends to see in his dreams. Their presence becomes stronger during Night of the Nocturne.

The other residents of Himmelstad find Catalpa mysterious as vaer rarely seeks out casual conversation though he has found a friendship with Nezha, the librarian. Catalpa donates to the local museum often as has lent his own personal belongings from his past for them to study and observe.

Catalpa is a fifth-generation Naomi descendant.
