Asphodel, I must say, I found your inquiries quite interesting. While I consider myself something of an expert on magical phenomena, you pose questions that I have not frequently encountered. What does decide what magic a dragon is naturally inclined toward? Why can some magics be taught, and others only arise at the moment they are most desperately needed? I study magic in theory, as in what exactly it is capable of, but its relation to dragons themselves, and the reasons dragons might use one sort and forsake another... it is not something I often think about. I have enjoyed the exercise. Magic in and of itself is a complex beast, and it would be impossible to pinpoint only one factor that always works exactly the same way. Still, in short, one of the largest factors is genetics. Certain magical abilities are inherited down entire bloodlines -- not unlike, I might add, the way one might pass on the genes of a Malice Ichor. You could even say that Malice Ichors themselves are just one massive magical line, though unique in the way that it can also infect the Carnage-Ichor ranks to spread itself. You mentioned that you were able to learn your parent's magic despite being adopted, while your father was never able to master it? I am only speculating, of course, but I suspect that may have something to do with being a born Malice, rather than a changed one. Carnage-Ichors are not known for their magical affinity; they are given strength beyond measure and the power to fight, but they do not often have innate magical affinity. But because you were born into Malice, you have a certain aptitude for magic that your father did not. Again: I am only speculating. I am an expert in magic, but very much not in the issues of genetics, or even godly blessings. That which I study is typically a bit more abstract. With enough information, I could tell you exactly what your own magic is capable of, and of course I find myself intrigued with the idea of pushing the limits of what is possible to do. Theory is rather more mathematical than I suspect you would like your answers to be, but I will do my level best to put it into more easily digestible words.
[What follows is... a completely incomprehensible account of dozens of potential factors that may impact what magics a dragon will be naturally inclined toward. It spans at least thirty pages, and includes diagrams, quite a lot of math, and one surprisingly good sketch of a Gaoler skull with Gnarlhorns attached. A diagram of a Crowned Malice Ichor, perhaps?]
I do hope all of that helps to answer your questions. Do feel free to write again, if you have any more. I have already enjoyed this correspondence far more than any other letters I have received; most dragons write asking me for assistance, not for information. It is a welcome change of pace.
Sincerely,
Azra, Witch of the Wandering Contagion |

About
An enigmatic figure living in the border between the Wandering Contagion and the Starwood Strand, Azra is a well-known legend: a fickle witch in the contagion, whose services can be bought. For those he likes, he crafts spells or potions that assist them and help to solve their problems. For those he decides he dislikes, he creates things that will make their problems significantly worse. He sustains himself on the despair of those whose problems he exacerbates, as well as the fear and confusion of those who aren't sure which outcome they will get. He lives where he does in order to have access to magical resources from nearby Arcane clans. He corresponds with them regularly: he is something of a genius when it comes to his area of expertise, and so long as he gets something out of it he will collaborate. He wants very much to learn all there is to know about magic. He avoids detection by the Carnage-Ichors by disguising himself and using every trick he knows to deflect blame. In a counterintuitive way, it helps that he is well-known: not one of the dragons who has met him face-to-face has seen his true appearance, and with so many eyewitness accounts of a dragon who is not a Malice Ichor, why would anybody suspect a thing? |

Variant
Malice-Ichor
Malice-Ichors are chaotic dragons who bring discord everywhere they go; they feed off of negativity, and thus cause it wherever and whenever they can. They are known for being liars, and depicted in stories and art as liars, whispering into their victims' ears. Born Crowned, Azra never had very much motivation to seek more chaos than it takes to sustain him. He has always found himself far more interested in the study of magic than in the pursuit of power, and he doesn't seek to make himself any more dangerous than he is. Those desperate dragons that come to him for his magic are more than enough to keep his strength up, and he does take a cruel satisfaction in exacerbating the problems of those who annoy him. |

Loyalties
Azra is a relatively unattached dragon, with few loyalties outside of his own goals. He has practically no connection to the Carnage-Ichors, his Malice Ichor family, or the wider conflict in the Scarred Wasteland; he knows very little about it and cares little to learn more. He puts a token effort into avoiding notice by the C-Is, but never out of fear: he simply does not wish to be disturbed. He has put much of himself into his cozy little home. He has a comfortable living space, a small library, and everything he needs to make potions or to use complex spells. What more could he need? He does have contact with a few Arcane clans, primarily so that he can get magical resources from them. There are several types of magical tome that are difficult to obtain in the Scarred Wasteland, particularly on the magical theory Azra is so fascinated by. Still, while he trades for those tomes, he doesn't let anybody get particularly close. While he is widely recognized to be a magical genius, it comes along with bouts of unreality that he would prefer not to let anybody close enough to witness. |
