- knows a fair bit of the dragons from the lightning/light border

- hes old and was a very active merchant so byproduct of that. they dont like him

- rabbits and cats are sacred in virulent (for digging up contagion tendrils and warding off Incredibly Deadly rodents) and hurting them is punishable by death
- so he strategically starting feeding them so they'd hang around and stop dragons from coming in and BLASTING him with spells
- they're bodyguards

- tried to leave with revival when she came to get the kids, not because he cared about his kid but because he saw the writing on the wall what with the war incoming
- revival hated his vibes and still does to this day

- illicitly trading with the merchant caravans that come sniffing around the caverns
- virulent kinda makes or takes everything they need and their exports is fancy loot or whale stuff mostly
- so there's a market for other Virulentian goods that are market rare and prized as a show off thing, like woven blankets and pots and old cavalry harpoons
- so yeah he's flat out stealing stuff off people's clotheslines
- and doesn't get that leaving a fifty doesn't make him square
