|ORIEL|
Doctor's Assistant

Quick • Caring • Bold
"Stay still, this will only hurt for a second."

Occupation: Nurse

Details: Oriel became the doctor's assistant after joining the caravan. Her small body allows her to quickly run errands for the doctor. She's a favorite among the hatchlings because of her interesting pattern and kind demeanor. She's often left to handle the check-ups and shots for the hatchlings because of this.

New to nursing, she's slowly learning first aid and medicine from Koshka. She dreams of becoming a full-fledged nurse in a city one day. She plans on joining Koshka in Calliope City once Koshka decides to leave the caravan and inherit her family's business.

Origins
Once upon a time, there was a Fae that came into existence seemingly out of nowhere. Her skin was made of fabric and sewn together in pieces to make up her body. When she popped into the world, she was alone. No souls in sight, her world was only filled with the nature around her. Surprisingly, she could speak, fly, and do many things a normal dragon would be capable of doing. The only thing she didn't have to do was eat.

After a while, she dubbed herself "Oriel." This felt right to her. Day in and day out she would play. She'd launch herself into the sky and roam around, free from earthly stresses. However, she eventually tired of being by herself. There must be more to this world besides me, she thought. So, the little Fae set off on a journey.

Oriel wanted to find another soul like herself. One day, she got her wish. Out in an open field, she found the house of a toymaker living on the outskirts of civilization. He invited her into his home, never giving his name. Oriel didn't mind, he was the first soul she had ever met. He was kind. She lived with him for what felt like forever, only ever referring to him as "the Toymaker."

Time continued on and Oriel remained the same but the Toymaker was showing signs of aging. He was getting old and soon his life would run out. Oriel knew this, her heart ached with sorrow for she did not know what to do after he was gone. The Toymaker reassured her and told her he'd make sure she would be ok after he was gone.

That time arrived sooner than Oriel would have hoped. The Toymaker left little behind for her in terms of money, but what he did leave behind was something more valuable. He had left behind his journal, and in it held his thoughts, dreams, and many maps.

She discovered that the Toymaker originally had a wife and daughter but had lost them both to a house fire. The only memento that survived was a fae doll he had sewn for his daughter. In his anguish, he moved to the edge of the world to escape his pain. Before he made it to his destination, he decided to bury his daughter's doll as a way to put her to rest. He knew that if he held onto the doll any longer, it would only bring him more pain.

He writes about his first meeting with Oriel only a few months after burying her, about how he thought he went mad with grief that he was imagining things. How could a doll come to life? He wanted to destroy Oriel but couldn't bring himself to do it. When Oriel appeared in his doorway, it reminded him of his daughter. Oriel's mannerisms, even her name, were the same. The Toymaker decided to let her stay. He resolved to teach Oriel as he would have taught his daughter.

Upon reading the Toymaker's journal, Oriel cried for the first time. She didn't know she could. He had left her many maps of the world, places to see, where dangers lie, everything. At the end of the journal was his final wish:

Oriel, my daughter, always wanted to be a nurse when she grew up. Please, make my daughter's wish come true.

Oriel set off on another journey into the world, this time she would learn to become a "nurse," though she didn't know what that meant. She decided to follow one of the maps his father left for her. On this map, the words "Calliope City" were circled.

Emerald Skies Caravan

When Oriel arrived in Calliope City, she was overwhelmed. The only other soul she met before this was the Toymaker. But Calliope City was huge! She didn't know where to go.

What would be considered an act of the deities, she ran into Horace, an elderly gentleman. He recognized Oriel was in distress and took her in. After hearing about her mission, he contacted the Emerald Skies Caravan to ask for a favor.

Now, Oriel travels full-time with the Emerald Skies caravan as Koshka's assistant. Koshka is training her to become a nurse (after finally figuring out what it means to be one). Oriel still has a long way to go, but she is very happy to be working toward the Toymaker's final wish for her.
