Boffo was learning a new bored game (yes “bored” because it was something to do when you were bored) at school. You had to constantly check your position in the game so it was called “Checking,” and the player doing the checking was called a “Checker.” Their class assignment was to make their own game board and pieces. She decided she wanted to use flower heads as game pieces for Checking, as did several other hatchlings, so they went to the training fields to pick some flowers and other stuff for the other hatchling’s games.


She spent a lovely time gathering 12 blue roses and 12 pale pink roses with her nursery school class. She placed each flower carefully in the bag the teacher gave each of them when they got to the Training Fields. They were lining up to return to school when she dashed out of the line to pick a few extra of each just in case.



Back at school, she popped the heads off the flowers so she could use them as pieces. This bored game also required a board. Using a black crayon she drew a bunch of boxes on a piece of paper. She could not remember the exact number of rows and columns but she was pretty sure it had 8 squares along the ends. Once she had that done, she colored in every other box with a different color of crayon because it was prettier that way --this way there was no boring black and white or red and black but instead white and rainbow. She was pretty happy with it even if she had made some mistakes in making the boxes and had had some trouble erasing those mistakes.




She tried to teach her friend Ostara how to play but they ended up having more fun just jumping the flowers over the various squares to the other side to become the “Field Marshall” then using the Field Marshal to lead the special dance. She thought it was called the “square dance” move and if it wasn’t it should be. In any case they had a lot of fun until the teacher made them put the game away in Boffo’s cubby so they could have snack time. Luckily the extra flowers Boffo picked made great special snacks for her and Ostara.

Boffo and Ostara really like pizza. They also really like flowers. They hoped they could combine their two favorite things so they went to visit Bones, the “experimental” chef of the Clan.

“Bones! Bones! Can you make something for us?” two little hatchlings scampered over looking up at her with adorable big eyes.

“Sure, what can I make you?” asked the smitten Bones.

“We want pizza with flowers on it!”

“To eat?” asked Bones

“I don’t eat plants!” said Boffo with a yuck face.

“But I do!” piped up Ostara, “or at least I might if it tasted good!”

“Plants taste yucky always!” declared Boffo.

“Nuh uh!” shouted Ostara.

“Uh, huh” shouted Boffo back.

After a moment’s thought, Bones knew exactly what to do.

“My darlings, I know exactly how to settle this and you both will think this will be wonderful!” shouted Bones overtop of the arguing hatchlings.

Both hatchlings stopped shouting immediately. “You do?” they both asked.

“Yes, follow me!” The little hatchlings followed Bones about gathering ingredients from various places in the lair, some of which they begged for nicely, some of which they “borrowed,” some of which they just gathered. .

After everything was gathered, they set all the ingredients in little bowls collected from Bones’ lab (she was a cook by hobby but an apprentice alchemist by trade) including some big mixing bowls, pitchers of water and pie pans. They all sat outside in the grass, in the sunshine, and spent a very pleasant afternoon making mud pies with toppings of flowers and leaves (“burrowed” from Sloop’s yard) as well as sticks, bugs, and pretty pebbles from around the lair, and bits of cloth and buttons from Amazonite, the tailor/modiste. Boffo even pretended not to notice when Ostara ate some of the flowers and plants.
