Biography

Helianthe Tea Shop Owner
Helianthe runs Sunstone Teas, the local tea shop in Scatterspark Outpost. Though a large portion of the locals prefer coffee (Lightning dragons and researchers, of course), there's no shortage of business for the quiet little shop. Helianthe was raised by gardeners and herbalists, and her passion for tea developed at a young age. Her knowledge is encyclopedic, and, as befits a Light dragon, she has a vast collection of books on history and ceremony and cultivation, along with a dozen journals of her own personal notes. Whatever your taste, be it traditional or flavored, strong or nuanced, true tea or herbal tisane, Helianthe either has what you're after or knows where to get it.

Once she was old enough, Helianthe left her birth clan to serve for several years as an apprentice to a tea merchant, traveling all over Sornieth. She learned a lot, not only about different teas, but also how to trade. How to make fair deals with suppliers, how to read customers, how to build a strong reputation. By the time she finished her apprenticeship, all of her master's regular trade partners knew her by name, and knew they'd be seeing a lot more of her in the future. Despite her soft-spoken demeanor, Heli is no pushover, and other dragons and beastfolk in the business are always happy to trade with such a fair and straightforward dragon.

Her life's path led her to the Outpost when she met Jadeite, the leader of the Sunshower Trading Company, and decided to join the caravan for a visit to the little settlement on the outskirts of the Carrion Canyon and Hewn City. She wasn't sure what to expect; neither of the neighboring regions are known for their charm or hospitality, of course. But a few days in the Outpost settled the matter. She loved the small town bustle, the market, the wide open sky and the desert heat. The curious characters as well: a strange assortment of foundlings and vagabonds and scholars and scientists, all of them interesting in their own ways, and all of them in need of some good, quality tea.

Stories
Sunflower Soiree - 2020
The Sunflower Soiree is beautiful this year, Helianthe thought, gazing around at the festivities. Of course, living in the desert meant there wasn't much of a sunflower meadow, but the dragons of Scatterspark Outpost had worked hard to give the market a thorough glow-up, to great success: the whole center of town looked like an explosion of summer. Glowing orbs and lanterns hung everywhere, chalk art decorated the canyon walls and the ground, and paper flowers were pinned all over the market stalls. The true attraction, though, was the sunflowers, carefully cultivated in Peony's greenhouse or traded from nearby Light clans, and painstakingly arranged by the local florist, Vortias. Pots of tall, proud sunflowers were everywhere, in all shapes and sizes, accented by white daisies and soft green sempervivum, and many of the partygoers were wearing boutonnieres and garlands of bright yellow flowers.

Helianthe herself had spent weeks arranging her own refreshments for the event: a formal tea in a sunny spot on the cliffside, with elegant little treats provided by the local bakery. In addition to the more traditional black teas, Heli made sure to provide some of her summer favorites, such as masala chai and blackberry basil. The Pearlcatcher had only rarely served so many dragons at once, and by the time the last guests had left her tea tables to go explore the rest of the soiree, Helianthe was thoroughly exhausted, in the best way. After taking a few moments to freshen up, she took to the streets, taking advantage of her first opportunity to relax and enjoy the sights.

She'd never have pictured herself living in a place like this, far away from the farms and gardens of her upbringing, settled among dragons from such different backgrounds. But it had its charms: she couldn't help but smile as she watched the hatchlings tumble through the streets, trailing bright ribbons and laughter behind them. And the radio system, that bizarre and impressive invention, filled the settlement with music even when you were too far from the singers to hear them naturally. Of course, Helianthe wasn't the oddest of the misfits who had come to the Outpost by far, and she never lacked for other dragons with whom to wonder at the canyon's customs. Who would have guessed, for example, that so many Ice dragons would have immigrated to the desert?

There was one of her fellow oddballs now-- she hailed the Fae with a wave, calling, "Vortias, dear! Your arrangements are stunning. Come, have a cold drink before you get heatstroke." She detached the florist from the centerpiece he was fussing over with ease, drawing him along with her toward her shop.

"Oh heavens, Helianthe, hello," he buzzed, in that toneless way Faes have. But Heli had done business with enough Faes that she could recognize the gratitude in his posture and frills. "That sounds wonderful. I've been nearly melting all day." Only a bit of an exaggeration, from an Ice dragon.

"Come, come. I think I've got just the thing to cool you down." And get his mind off his floral arrangements for a few minutes. The silly creature had more than earned a break, and Helianthe had to admit that she had too. What better way to relax than a cup of tea with a friend?
