Biography

Asher had been infected by plague when a malicious Necromancer passed through the land he resided in. He'd fallen ill from the unleashed contagion and began to die. He fled the diseased lands, his mind becoming a jumbled mess. He flew for days until he was too exhausted to go any farther. He could feel the last of his energy leaving him; his wings faltered and he crashed to the ground. He lay there, his consciousness fading in and out.

He doesn't quite remember when or how, but he awoke from this state with a clear head. A female Nocturne, her beige body covered in blood colored stripes, leaned over him. "Are you feeling better?" she asked him. He nodded to her. He certainly was.

"I'm glad to hear that," she said. "My name is Aceso and I am a Necromancer. More specifically, I have a calling for healing. I saw you suffering from plague contamination and used my ability to call disease into myself to cure you. Well, to neutralize the disease in you, anyway. I'm afraid you will never truly recover." She looked at him sadly.

However, Asher didn't mind. He wasn't dying anymore and he felt stronger somehow. Considering how he'd felt so recently, he now felt like he'd never been healthier. His looks may have changed, but he still felt like he was the same dragon as before. On the inside, he was himself.

"Well, I should be on my way as soon as you're feeling well enough to fly on your own," Aceso told him. But he didn't want her to leave him. He vaguely recalled that he no longer had a home or clan to return to, having flickering memories of watching his loved ones fall to the infection.

"I'd like to go with you, if you'll allow it," he told her. "I don't think I have anywhere or anyone to return to anymore." He didn't mention the strange pull he felt towards her.

Aceso looked at him for a long moment, clearly weighing her thoughts. She flashed a small smile before telling him, "I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have an assistant." She, too, felt a connection with him that she didn't yet understand.

"You are what we refer to as a Neutralized Ghoul." Aceso was explaining what had happened to him and what his new life would be like. "Ghouls are normally failed Necromancers so I was surprised to learn that you had not asked to be touched by Mother...err, the Plaguebringer," she clarified. "I'll have to do some research to learn if this has happened before. Normally...well, normally victims of plague contamination are expected to, uhh, die. So, your case is quite unusual."

Asher nodded along, only vaguely understanding what he was being told. He noticed that his emotional state was...numb? His feelings were dampened somehow. He didn't feel excited, but he also wasn't upset or scared or even sad, despite feeling like he should be mourning. Perhaps he was just in shock?

The one thing that did elicit a reaction from him was Aceso's presence. Whenever she was near he felt content. Whenever she would leave, even briefly, he yearned to go find her. These feelings were stronger than he'd ever felt before. Could this be infatuation...or, was this something else, something more?

"I've been researching why you were affected by plague, but didn't die as a ghoul. I think there were a multitude of factors at play, including Mother's will, but I believe your Ice heritage played a role. It is possible that as you were dying your ties to Ice magic and the icy environment of the Southern Icefield cooled your body significantly, which slowed the spread of plague," Aceso said to Asher. He nodded his head. Her explanation sounded reasonable. "Biologically, this means that more of your cells may have avoided infection which resulted in me having enough time to heal you."

Asher thought back to the day he'd met her. He remembered opening his eyes to the sight of her worried face looking down at him. Her concern had endeared her to him. And since that day he had remained by her side.
