Biography

Nova had failed the trials. The sun had set on the 23rd day and she knew what fate awaited her: the slow, agonizingly painful death of a Ghoul. Weakened by her struggle to contain the plague coursing through her, Nova had no energy to fight against her inevitable doom. She lay down and watched the sunset, an eerie calm settling over her as she accepted her fate. Somehow, she was able to sleep.

That peace was short-lived as she awoke hours later to blinding pain and fire in her blood. She could feel her body rotting from the inside out. The pain was worse than during the trials, the affliction more acute than before. The organs that sustained her were failing, the plague contamination being too much for them to handle. This is it, she thought. I am a Ghoul now. May Plaguemama have mercy and end my suffering quickly. Though she doubted the Plaguebringer appreciated her weakness and may instead extend her suffering out of spite.

She awoke the next morning, expecting to be writhing in agony again but found her breathing steady and her heartrate calm. Perhaps I have died, she thought. She didn't know what happened after death, but she could still feel the world around her and thought that she still inhabited a physical body.

She wasn't writhing in pain anymore, and couldn't feel the plague eating away at her body. Perhaps she was delirious with the pain, tricking her mind into thinking she was all better. Perhaps I have gone mad. How would she know?

She wish she had died. For now she had to live with the shame of knowing that she was not chosen to serve the Plaguebringer in her goals to improve the world. She was not worthy, and everyone would know. My failure is written on my skin and woven into my blood. I have brought shame upon myself and my clan.

Nova decided that she would leave the Plaguebringer's Domain, knowing that she could not face her brethren. Necromancers did not tolerate Wraiths. Whereas Necroservi might be allowed to be of service, no one wanted to associate with a Wraith. She had not passed the trials in time, even if she had somehow overcome the plague.

As she was flying, her vision began to blur. Images flashed before her, hallucinations that made no sense. Sounds that couldn't possibly be present rang in her ears. Anguished screams, cries of pain, angry growls. Yet there were no other dragons nearby, at least not that Nova could see. But could she trust her senses? She was suddenly scared. Have I truly lost my mind?

Feeling a sinking feeling in her gut, Nova landed amongst the trees of the dark forest. She felt eyes on her, but wasn't sure if that was because there were eyes on her or if she was just being paranoid. I'm not sure I can trust my senses anymore. She took a deep breath and tried to make sense of the visions she had seen. Lost in a trance, she didn't notice the old Snapper step out of the shadows.

The Snapper didn't seem to notice her at first either. He was mumbling to himself about something he couldn't seem to remember. He was only a few feet away from her when he suddenly looked up, surprised to find anyone in his path. "Oh, pardon me..." he started to say. Nova was pulled out of her trance.

As the Snapper looked at her, his face paled. "You're a servant of the Plaguebringer, aren't you? Your kind is not welcomed here. Please, leave now. I'm going to warn my clan of your presence." And with that he hurried off, probably to get reinforcements. Nova thought it was best for her to heed his advice and leave.

After weeks of traveling, being careful to avoid as many clans as she possibly could, Nova found herself in the Sunbeam Ruins. She didn't know why she'd come here at all - their Flights were frequently in conflict and she knew that she likely wouldn't be received well by any clan here. Yet, something had driven her here. It didn't seem that she had flown randomly but rather with a sense of purpose... a calling of sorts.

She longed to learn what had drawn her here. But I don't even know if what I feel is real, or if I'm just trying to escape my own thoughts. Despairing, she sat near the Moonportal and thought of the place she could no longer call home.

A pair of Nocturnes flew past her, landing nearby. Nova turned her head to look in their direction and noticed that one of them was a Necromancer. She looked much as Nova did, but it was clear that she had power that Nova did not. Energy practically radiated off of her and Nova couldn't take her eyes off her.

The female Nocturne looked over at Nova. Suddenly recalling herself, Nova prepared to flee. But a gentle voice called out: "Please wait!" Startled, Nova cautiously put her feet back on the ground. She probably couldn't outfly the Necromancer and her Neutralized Ghoul companion anyway.

"Are you feeling unwell?" the female Nocturne called out. "I sense...well, I'm not entirely sure what I sense, but I feel the desire to help you. I am called Aceso. I am a healer and I know that you've been through a lot with facing the trials, having faced them myself."

"You did not fail them, as I did, Necromancer," Nova replied, bitterness coloring her words. She instantly regretted antagonizing the other dragon, who so far had shown her nothing but kindness. She hung her head. "Sorry, that was uncalled for."

The Nocturnes approached her, slowly and calmly so as not to frighten her. "I do not think that Plague Mother wishes any of her children ill, even if they were unable to pass the trials. That is why I felt compelled to heal my companion, Asher, and why I sense that you and I have entwined destinies as well." Nova could feel the dragon's gaze upon her. She shyly looked up into a pair of reassuring eyes. There was no judgment there, no blame. Only compassion and acceptance. She had not thought to find either among Necromancers.

"I...I am unworthy of your assistance," she stammered out. The female Nocturne said nothing in response to that. She just continued to smile at her.

"Were your eyes always faceted?" Aceso asked her.

"No." One more thing that the trials changed about me, Nova thought to herself.

"Perhaps that is why I have been called to help you. There is a chance that your psyche has splintered, that your mind is distraught. I think I can help you realign your energies and thus heal your mind. Shall I try?"

Nova didn't know what to think or how to answer her. So they stood in silence. No one spoke for a long while. Then, Asher spoke: "Let her help you. You need this." His words were spoken with sincerity. He seemed to believe that Aceso was capable of helping. I want to believe, Nova thought to herself, but I am afraid.

As if she could sense this fear - and perhaps she could - Aceso spoke once more. "Have faith, young one. I promise you that if I am unable to help you, I will not stop until I find someone who is. Rest assured, I will not let you continue to suffer." And Nova believed. "Please help me," she said.
