The forge is bright and hot. It always is. He stokes it carefully, tends it daily. Some think of him as snapping and fast and as energetic as the flames and he is that - he is a spiral, after all - but one cannot master forgework if one is impatient. He keeps his energy carefully honed, carefully pointed towards continuing this work which gives him his energy. The others don't really understand it. They think his snapping temper is it's own thing - but all emotions are interlinked in the person in whom they originate. The fire flares and he dares not take his eyes from it, watching the heat, feeling it, until he knows the time is right to remove the crucible and pour. Of course he snaps and snarls when he is distracted. Crucibles lost or ruined, ore allowed to run into the embers, a waste of all his hours of work. His eyes were earned in practice and study; he does not care for that being so easily dismissed. He is not there for them to demand his attention. He is there to work. |

Though perhaps... not always just to work. Even with all his precision there is sometimes an excess of silver or gold or iron - even, some rare times, platinum - and he does hate waste so. He even saves the filings from when he cuts pipes down to shape, spiralises screws to fit - they can all be melted down to purpose again and thence comes his wires and pins and jump rings, allowing him to carefully piece together glittering jewellery from the sparking fire of his forge. People forget that, sometimes. He is a smith, yes, an engineer in some few ways, and his fire is a place of burning heat and new items emerging glowing so brightly only he can look at them with ease. But... there is a beauty in all of that. There is a beauty in the wood with which he kindles a new forge, in the pitch black grain of the charcoal he uses to maintain even heat, in the sparks that fly up the chimney and in the greenery that flourishes because of his irrigation pipes. Fire may be his purpose, but he is not blind to beauty. He sees it in everything. The others rarely ask where the jewellery Manuka sells originates. It satisfies him all the same to see it appreciated. |
