Czar

Who, who are you really? Czar is a dragon of many hobbies and titles: cross stitcher, knitter, gossip extraordinaire, Golden Girl, Queen of Flower Crowns, etc. It’s hard to find her without a project in her hands, or a partner to share gossip with. She can most commonly be found knitting some article of clothing. She keeps a side business of knitting winter sweaters that are shipped out to colder territories. During hatchling season, she loves to make flower crowns for all the little ones, and teach them how to make their own. Everyone in the clan has received at least one flower crown lesson from Czar! But Czar’s favorite thing? Gold. Gold. Gold. Gold. Gold. Did she mention gold? Keeper of the clan’s gold and gem stocks, Czar enjoys nothing more than sitting upon the clan’s stores, in typical dragon hoard fashion. She rolls in it, sits atop the pile, fashions it into a bed… it is, quite honestly, unhealthy, but Czar refuses intervention. Bizarrely, despite not having any clear storage or filing system, she always knows the exact amount of gold present in the pile. When she is away from the treasury in her den, her gold-plated familiars guard the clan’s riches for her. Being the clan treasurer, she does not take kindly to thieves or unauthorized withdrawals from the clan’s stores. Those with sticky fingers will receive swift punishment from her husband.

Born to unremarkable parents from an unremarkable clan, in an unremarkable part of the Fishspine Reef, Czar would simply deign to describe her childhood as “boring.” Most of her birth clan was obsessed with interpreting the Tidelord’s prophecies, an obsession she did not share. Instead, she quickly became obsessed with shiny things, specifically starting with seashells littered on the seafloor.

She began garnering piles of glittering shells. She tried to stitch them into necklaces like her grandmother did, but was devastated when she’d fail to poke the needle through, shattering the fragile shell. She tried to arrange them into art pieces to sell, but would become too devastated with the idea of parting with her shells once she was done, so they’d just take up room in her parent’s den instead.

As she got older, she hoarded other types of shiny objects; scales, shiny rocks, lost keys, spoons, and more. When she hit her late teens, however, her shiny fixation took a sharp turn into becoming a gold fixation. Gold was shiny, sure; gold coins were pleasantly smooth and cool to the touch; they were a hot commodity with other dragons; and she found her reflection to be the most pleasing shade of yellow in a gold mirror’s reflection. If it were an option, she may have even tried to become gold herself.

However, her gold fixation turned into a curse. It had started with her selling most of her items to obtain as much gold as possible. It then evolved into her scouring the sea for lost bits of gold; and when that wasn’t enough, she began to nab small amounts from personal gold piles left “unattended.” Eventually, when her addiction could no longer be satiated, she started stealing from the clan’s stores to build her own gold pile up.

This did not go on for long before she was caught. The clan leaders bickered amongst themselves for 3 days on what could be done; eventually, it was agreed she would be banished from her clan, never to return. To repay the damage she’d caused stealing from others, her entire gold stash was confiscated, and she was sent out onto the road with little more than the clothes on her back into the world before even becoming an adult.

Furious and alone, Czar lived a life of petty crime for several years, travelling on the road from one domain to another, stealing what she could to survive.

It was, surprisingly, Champagne who head hunted her for the position of clan treasurer: he was in the same bar as her one night as she swindled a hustler of all his gold, after successfully guessing the exact amount of gold the hustler had in his possession. A strange choice, to be sure, but with her uncanny (or unnatural) ability to detect and count coins, she seemed the best choice for a clan with little fame to bring in someone more qualified for the job. It wasn’t like there was a lot to steal back in those days as well.

Her thievery habits calmed down, and eventually died out, once she was given the treasury to watch over. It seems that having a stable outlet for her gold obsession tempered her personality considerably.
