Pharaoh takes another step forward.

'You can do this,' he thinks to himself.

And another step.

And a third.

The normally composed and serious dragon looks nervous under his hood. (He's pulled it down farther than usual today so it doesn't show.) Refusing to show weakness, he continues to plod forward; to anyone who didn't know him, it'd look like he was out for a leisurely walk. On the inside, however, he's dying from anxiety.

He's just going to say hello.

Maybe ask her for tea.

She seems like a nice girl, right?

At least, that's what his wife said.

It doesn't take long to make it to the new girl's den. ('Not long enough,' Pharaoh thinks.) It's half-dug into the ground, and the glass in the ceiling reflects the sun into his eyes. He was already anxious, and now he's annoyed.

As he stands over her den, a pearlcatcher pops her head out the other side, having noticed his approach.
What was her name again? He can't see her face because his hood is too low. He didn't think this through.

"...Yes?" she asks. He's already screwed this up, hasn't he?

"...Hello," he responds, unhelpfully. At least that's step one down.

"...Hello." Her response is equally curt and unhelpful. Maybe he should just turn around.

When he thinks about it, he thinks about the upset look his wife would give him if he told her how fast he'd left. He decides to stand his ground.

"......Hello," he says again, like a broken record. He takes a moment to drum up the courage to ask her a question, but just as he goes to open his mouth--

"Can I help you?" she asks. There goes his courage. He still can't see her expression, but she sounds annoyed.

This time she doesn't interrupt him as he shifts his weight from side to side, like a nervous horse, doing his best to summon his courage again. "Do you like tea?" he finally sputters out.

She doesn't answer for a few seconds (an eternity). "Well, yes."

This conversation feels like he's pulling his own teeth out. "Do you... want some tea?"

The pause in conversation is even longer now, but eventually she sputters out, "A-aren't you married?"

A second passes. "What? No I-I mean yes. What? What did you think I meant?"

"Oh no, I just--" she stumbles over her words, but soon starts laughing. "Oh, oh god, the pause... I thought you were trying to, I don't know. Be subtle about something. Thank goodness." She heaves a sigh of relief.

Pharaoh also sighs, pulling back his hood a bit so he can look at her face better. Her laughter helped to relax him. "Yes. Right. My wife wanted to know if you'd join us for tea. As a welcoming gift."

"Oh! I would love to, but I have to finish setting up my rat cage. How about tomorrow?"

Pharaoh nods. "Tomorrow. At 2?"

"That sounds excellent! Thank you for the invite, uh..."

"Pharaoh," he responds. "...And you?"

"Dust," she smiles.

He nods and leaves, letting Dust get back to whatever a rat cage is.

Pharaoh, if you were to speak to any dragon in the clan, who would it be? This excludes all the dragons you are currently comfortable in speaking with.

Pharaoh looks down at you, scrutinizing you. After staring at you for a beat, he turns away, not answering the question.

His wife, Czar, doesn't look up from her knitting project. "Darling." Her voice is sweet and honeyed, but there's a hint of danger in the way she draws out the ing. "Be polite to our guests. It's a harmless question."

Pharaoh looks her way for a moment, and then turns back to you. His fingers make a tight fist as he grabs onto the hem of his cloak, wringing the poor thing tightly. Through clenched teeth, he simply responds, "Serene."

He goes back to ignoring you. His wife, however, perks up, looking mildly surprised. "Serene? Why's that?"

"They didn't ask that," he replies gruffly. "I don't have to tell them anything else."

"Yes, but now I'm curious." She stops knitting for a moment to look at him. "Why her?"

His grip loosens and then tightens on his hood again as he looks at her. His expression changes subtly as he addresses her. Is he nervous? "She's a hard worker. Champagne speaks highly of her. She has been here a long time. And she's not obnoxious."

Czar snorts at that last answer. "Sounds about right for you. Why don't you ask her for tea some time? You could use a few more friends."

Old bio:

Clanless and friendless as a pup, Pharaoh lived for a good portion of the beginning his life without friends or family, roaming Sornieth after his parents were exalted shortly after his birth to serve the deities. He wandered from place to place for a short while, eventually taking an extended rest in the comfortable tropical paradise of the Everbloom Gardens. There he met a fat and lazy Fae and a quick to snap Mirror, both starting out their own clan and looking for new members. Although he did not warm up to them at first, he found their straightforward attitude and actions refreshing and although he had only intended to stay for a short while and move on, he found a permanent home in the Aikka clan.

He only interacts with the original members of the clan due to his trust issues. Hates beating around the bush and indecisiveness.
