Blasting Powder
Amber

Drayth was wholly responsible, as in true form he had to get ahead of any sort of rumors set about by the Dreamers who thought that only their uses for magic were 'responsible' or 'appropriate for anyone older than a hatchling.' Bah. He didn't need to listen to such things, so long as he could keep achieving his goals. His goal, really. There was only one; to fulfill the urges of all dragonkind to go faster. Faster than sound. One day, faster than light.

He wasn't part of the dreamers though, no, he wasn't well versed in the arcane, only in visages of distant realms of machines that hummed with magic zipping across the plains. They had fire painted on their sides in his glimpses at those distant worlds, and Drayth was a fire dragon. Who cared if Cinderbug wanted to go faster than any snapper had ever gone before? Drayth did, his little apprentice in speed was a favorite of his, even if he claimed she was annoying.

Faster Than God

"Quick! Curacao! I need your assistance!" Drayth shouted, skidding to a halt through her open doorway and sending sparks flying. A danger, with all the firework-making equipment nearby. "I have an idea, and I need your help! I've figured it out, how to go faster than any spiral has ever gone before!" He explained his plan quickly, speaking as fast as he eventually wished himself to go. Drayth wanted rockets, four of them. One for each wing. He'd straighten himself out to align the rockets and fire himself as though he were the firework.

"Sounds pretty dangerous," Curacao offered as the only bit of caution the two would utter.

"Nonsense, science requires danger! You have to push the limits of mortality in order to push the limits of speed. Besides, it's what the Arcanist would want!" he exclaimed. Curacao agreed to help him out because he was right; the Arcanist would want them to do it for science. Also, there really wasn't anything else to get up to today.

The pair spent the rest of the day making rockets. They scrapped the first set for being too tiny to fit his limbs. The second set was too tiny for the speed they wanted to achieve here, no sense in not going for broke. Really, it was the choice of going big and go home or just go home, and having both was better than just one. Their third attempt also wasn't quite big enough, this time for Drayth's ego. So they settled on a fourth set of what Curacao dubbed them the BMF, short for Big Magical Fireworks and nothing else. No matter how badly Drayth wanted them to be called something else or wanted the acronym to stand for something else. She made them; she got to name them; that was their deal.

They set up their test site for their most excellent of plans, and Drayth straightened himself out. His sunglasses set, they both figured they were close enough to testing goggles for their purposes. It's not like the rockets were really near his eyes anyway. Drayth nodded and stayed as straight as a sunbeam through a magnifying glass, as focused on his goal as the light would be on an ant. Curacao lit the fuse, and both waited, not breathing, as the sparks slowly made their way up to the fireworks themselves. They'd decided on sparkler coating for the fuses because it would look cooler.

He shot off across the landscape with a bang, his whole body suddenly a bullet erupting from the gun of his own indomitable will. Faster than any dragon or beast or god had ever gone, he had done the impossible. His greatness came into question immediately when he noticed the rapidly approaching building. What building was that? He squinted, unable to tell through the tint of his immensely cool sunglasses. He slammed into it before he could figure it out, fireworks exploding and taking the whole building with them. It was the bank; he found out from Leonine's shouting.

Boom!

“That was incredible, the fastest we’ve ever gone! If we could just get a little bit faster we could see the photons in the air, Cinder!” Drayth prattled on as they dug themselves out of the mountainside they’d crashed into. The speed of impact had left them both bruised despite his very best efforts at safety, and his spine complained of all the corners he’d cut in building their crash safety equipment.

“Boom!” Cinderbug shouted, giggling in high-pitched squeals. Drayth thought nothing of it, assuming it to be a mimicry of their crash landing, done out of excitement for the success it had marked. He was wrong. The earth trembled beneath them and a sound of previously unheard strength sounded from behind them - back where they’d come from. Dust rose in a pillar, concealing the source of the sound in a wall of sediment. The spiral watched on in terror as the cloud of dust settled, revealing their homeland now buried in earth. The floating island had come tumbling down onto the planet, dragged down by the pull generated by their speed.

“What have I done,” Drayth asked aloud, barely more than a hushed gasp. He curled in on himself, tangled into a knot with Cinderbug at its center.

“I’ll move away and change my name, go to the Ashfall Wastes where no one will ever find me. No, you have to go home. Don’t look at me like that. I’ll be tried for our crimes. You can go home, no one will ever think you could ever be responsible for something of this magnitude. If they find out that my experimentation caused this they’ll jail me forever under that rock! But we have to get home, to help, don’t we?” the wizard rambled on, eyes wild with panic. In his knotted form, Cinderbug struggled to pop their head out. Seeing their friend’s distress, they did what seemed to work to distract him otherwise, bopping him on the nose with one tiny foot until he stopped talking to himself.

“You’re right, we can’t run away forever. But how could we ever go back?” Drayth asked aloud and only to himself, staring off to the settling dust.
