I will never leave the Boneyard, and neither will you. Count your days, they're numbered...
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

It was strange, inside the slimy little egg. The baby was awake, and yet he didn't know he wasn't supposed to be yet. He heard voices, but they were muffled through the shell. Of course, his childish curiosity couldn't have that. He pushed at the walls around him, clawing at the slimy green guck, until the egg eventually gave way. Him and his pearl took a long tumble to the hard, dusty ground, and immediately the voices stopped. Two dragons loomed over him, one with a pearl like his own, and the other ginormous. It took a great deal of effort for him to look at her face, and his mouth fell agape in wonder. And almost like she were mimicking the baby, her mouth threatened to hit the cracked ground.

"River... you dropped one. And it seems your clumsiness broke it," the older pearlcatcher snarled, "excellent work." The huge imperial reached down and picked the hatchling up by the scruff, gently shushing him, and he squeaked happily. He was so high up now! "I don't see you making an effort to carry these eggs, Styx," River retorted, and as she turned to emphasize, the baby in her arms got to see four other slimy green forms on her back. An excited chirp escaped him, and he began to try to hike River like she were a mountain. However, this mountain made very sure to keep him in place. Styx grumbled something that the distracted hatchling couldn't hear nor understand quite yet. "Surely you don't plan on keeping it." The imperial held the baby closer to her. "We're lost, River! We can't care for a baby!" All of the sudden, the young dragon was pulled from River and plopped in a pile of something white and sharp. "Styx!" His mate shouted in alarm, but he didn't relent. The hatchling was then swallowed in the yellowing bones, desperately clawing for a way out. "Come on. There's four more, don't cry about it." But cry she did, and the last thing that the young pearlcatcher heard from his parents were the fading sounds of sniffling and heavy claws hitting rock and bones.

...

"Master..." the voice of Marrow's faithful servant was ringing in his ears, but it didn't seem to hit home. He knew everything about this boneyard he had hatched in. He had a map of it etched into his brain, every single scattered bone was familiar to him... but now, he choked up. Everything beyond was a blur. He refused to admit that he was scared, but the tremble in his claw and the anxious lashing of his tail showed otherwise. His body reached out to follow his pyromaniac into the unknown, and he was met with death. His mind was swept up into a tornado, and all of the sudden he was drowning. He was dying! He felt nothing and everything in that moment. He felt his claws digging into his head, but he didn't feel the blood. He felt the heat and the sudden burns, felt himself scorching on his arms and his legs and his flank, but he didn't feel his body as it dragged across the ground. And, as fast as death came upon him, it disappeared. He was back on the familiar dusty ground. He was now aware of how hard he was panting and of the blood trickling down his muzzle, and Myelitis' rough voice behind him became clear again. "Master... forgive me. I have burned you." Marrow inspected himself, and sure enough, his legs and flank were not only covered in trails of burnt flesh, but also bloody claw marks. Were those from Litis, or from himself...? "No need... and no time. We must bring our hunt elsewhere." With some effort and a clattering of bones, Marrow was able to rise to his feet again. His one eye that wasn't shrouded in blood met the masked eyes of his servant, and was met with an unfamiliar emotion in the dragon he taught so well. Worry. "No. You are hurt. We must head back." It had to be serious, then. Litis wasn't a dragon who usually spoke up, especially too his master. Marrow knew how much it hurt for him to speak. So there must be more that he wasn't seeing... That might have been what drove him to spread his wings... or perhaps it was the feeling of relief that overwhelmed him when he thought of leaving the border behind him. "Very well." Was his answer, and Litis dipped his head in respect. So the two of them took off into a flight of blood and pain and silence, and Marrow was left to wonder what had really occurred back there. Maybe the Plaguebringer simply did not want him to leave. Maybe he was cursed... but whatever it was, he couldn't think on it for long. It gave him a headache and made his murderous, stone-cold heart accelerate. So when they returned to their construction of rocks and bones, Marrow chose to forget.
