Marrow is my savior. He taught me to use my suffering instead of enduring it; now I am able to reach further than plague magic. He is my master, and I will scorch you until all that is left is the dust of this land, if that is what he desires...

The poor baby pearlcatcher limped through the wasteland, no end in sight. His body was covered in burns and he was sick like no tomorrow. He let out a helpless cough, but once again, it didn’t nothing to clear the smoke in his lungs. A single tear fell down his snout as he crashed into a pile of bones, finally having lost the will to keep going. He hugged his burnt pearl close to him, the rough edges sending him into another fit of dry sobs. He wished he could go back and change what happened… He begged the Gladekeeper over and over, but still the tragedy remained set in stone…

He heard his mother scream, his siblings cry, a slashing of claws, and watched in horror as the den around him burst into flames. He started for the exit, but he soon realized that he had left something behind. His pearl! Although the place where he had ran from was now crawling with embers, he couldn't bring himself to leave it. When he first came here, he knew he didn't belong. But this family, they helped him feel at home. That pearl was etched with trees and flowers and tiny doodles from his newfound siblings, and he couldn't leave it. His body moved for him towards the place he last recalled seeing it, but it was too late. His nest had already succumbed to giant, roaring flames. But his claws, against his will, reached into the flames in a desperate search. Once he felt the familiar shape of his pearl, the panic sunk in. He had to leave, now. He was burning. He dragged himself and his pearl across the scorched ground, falling deeper and deeper into a crazed panic every time debris fell around him. But he didn't die. He praised the Gladekeeper the moment he saw the exit, and the silhouette of a skydancer standing there through the smoke.. His father? Had he come to save him? But when he reached his supposed savior, he was met with the sadistic smile of a stranger. And behind him, to his horror, were the burnt corpses of his mother, father, and his four small, innocent siblings. The skydancer reached for him with flaming claws, and he knew then that he would be next. So he ran. He dove through the trees and darted over rocky landscapes, until eventually, on red, dusty ground, he couldn't run anymore.

He let out a sad sniff at the memory. He couldn't cry anymore, he was bone dry after crying for the past week. He laid his forehead down on his blackened pearl. He just wanted to be back home, running after his siblings through the sweet-smelling fields. There was still that small hope inside of him that maybe he had imagined the corpses, maybe his family was still alive. But that could only stay as a dream, as whenever he looked down at his blackened pearl, that memory of the fire burned into his brain all over again. There were no trees, no doodles on that surface anymore. They were gone. But this time, fate didn't allow him to fall into despair once more. Rattling met his tiny ears, and he peeked cautiously over his pearl. There, looming above him, was a large, red, rotting pearlcatcher, the source of the sound being the bones strung about his clothing. There was a decisive look on his face as he looked the hatchling up and down.

"Hello, young one. What brings you out here?" The baby jumped. He hadn't heard someone speak in a while, he realized then. He tried to respond, but the only thing that escaped his dry mouth was a cough. He hid behind his pearl, hoping in that moment that the stranger would disappear. "I see. No need to be afraid, I won't hurt you." The newcomer strutted closer to the young dragon, inspecting the pearl. A Satin Pocketmouse, covered head to toe in scars and rotting patches, met the hatchling behind his pearl. It sniffed his face, and, despite the caution in the baby's eyes, began licking the spots where tears had dried. "You have endured much, little one... but remember, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." The older dragon spoke, and curiosity drove the hatchling out of hiding. "You may follow me, and I will teach you. Together, we will make everyone pay."
