OOOWick is destined to burn himself out.
OOOFor as driven as he is, Wick has always been decidedly directionless, if not entirely noncommittal. Plenty of well-meaning guiding hands have told him that, sooner or later, he'd find a stable niche, something to last him well into his golden years; Wick, however, seems to be unbothered about whether he reaches that ripe old age or not, provided he has a good run of it before that. After all, he's lived in Lantern's Light long enough to know that well wishes and optimism hardly ensure success. OOOAnyone looking for a guide in the city would be best and worst directed to Wick, known for having an ear to the ground, a knack for appraising oddities, and a wallet full of other dragons' coins. Called fodder by most, and countless more names by others, he still stands no better known in the city than any other scam artist or scavenger. But, what the Pearlcatcher lacks in originality, perhaps, he makes up for in integrity. Never one to rat out anyone who's put their honest trust in him, he's also managed to carve out a small niche as a fairly reputable errand boy for the merchants and other general natives of the city. It's this role that makes him such a useful guide; he knows the streets inside and out, unintentionally keeps careful track of loyalties and powerhouses in the city. Outsiders, especially rude ones, may be fair game for his more malicious or manipulative intentions, but such newcomers are still better off trying their luck with Wick's subconscious compendium and possible leeway than anyone else's hollow promises. OOOAnd, for this, some may suspect that Wick might hold a bit more sentimentality than the harshness of the city streets allow him to show. Though his position so low on the social rungs certainly isn't enviable, worse lots in life have been generously dealt throughout Lantern's Light, and he can't help but feel sympathetic towards those he's decided are his most trusted, tragedy-laden friends. For when misfortune is abundant, men like Wick feel compelled to share the extremely modest fortune they possess. OOOIt's not hard to imagine that through his hardly-concealed compassion, his meager sum may get stretched too thin; though, with his excessive assignments and erratic allegiance, one might see the dragon himself succumbing to the same fate. OOOStill, seemingly keeping him from total overexertion is the fact that Wick has already determined, rather superficially, that anticipation doesn't get anyone far. Set his expectations too high, get his heart too hopeful, and surely he'll only be equipped for disappointment down the line. But, when it seems there's no lower for all those around you to go, it's hard to look anywhere else but up… |
