Blaze was born into a world that was too rough, too bright, too noisy, and too crowded. She found ways to shield herself, and find a quiet, safe place for herself in an otherwise overwhelming world. Her clean white lab coat was one of the only things that she could wear without feeling roughness scratching at her scales. Plus, she could fill the pockets with soft flower petals to rub between her fingers, or trinkets to fiddle with.

When she needed relief from the noise, from crowds, and from dragons whose phrases and faces could be hard to understand, she turned to science and magic instead. Now there was something that made sense- something where all the pieces fit together, something she could study endlessly. She never got tired of studying, the possibilities of combining science and magic were endless. They filled her soul, and her imagination, her very being. She rejoiced in them more than anything else. It was so much easier to talk to other dragons if they were talking about some new discovery. It was so much easier to talk to other dragons as long as they didn’t expect her to talk much about anything else.

The move from Fire to Earth was hard. The dragons were all the same, but the lair was different. As soon as they reached their destination, she did everything she could to make the lair look similar to what it had before. She needed the comfort of familiarity. And at night, she would gaze up at the distant stars-which were the same everywhere- and dream of the new discoveries waiting for her.

And apparently, she wasn’t the only one. More and more dragons were coming to her asking questions about science (which she was more than happy to answer). More and more of them stopped being bored by everything she had to say. All the knowledge she had built was being valued and respected. Who was she to stop the path of discovery? Taking the reminders she would need of home, so as not to be too uncomfortable in the new lair, pocket full of soft flower petals, talking about science the entire time, she led the clan to the Starfall Isles. She knew she would find something amazing there.
