Fir Branch
┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Cypress descended from her perch, clawing her way down the trunk of her namesake tree. Her eyes roved the swamp around her, and she flicked a stray piece of Spanish moss from her mane as she reached its base. Here in her swamp, there was no solid ground apart from the slender knees of the cypress trees reaching above the murky water like stalagmites in a cave.

Nimbly, the Gaoler lept from knee to knee, crossing the swampland in a handful of gigantic leaps. Never once did she falter or lose her balance, even with four enormous paws that made the knees look like toothpicks. An alligator eyed her warily, vertical pupil dilating, following her movements. One false step, and she would be his next meal. Then again, one moment of inattention and he might become hers. It was a delicate balance in the marsh. She narrowed a horizontal pupil in his direction.

But the alligator would not be her meal today. In a few seconds, Cypress had crossed the marsh, zeroing in on her prey. A white ibis perched on a knee only a few hundred yards away, its delicately feathered head following her approach with alarm. The ibis’ wing was injured, which Cypress had surmised from observing its movements for the past hour from her treetop perch. Slowly, silently, the alligator maneuvered through opaque water, taking his cue from the dragon above. Both had reached the same understanding. If the ibis attempted flight, it would inevitably land in the water, thus becoming the alligator’s prize. Should the ibis stand its ground, however, it would meet its end in the jaws of the Gaoler. Cypress shot one last look at the gator, horizontal pupil meeting vertical one. A flurry of feathers, a brief struggle, and the Gaoler disappeared into the canopy, ibis clutched in her jaws.

Quote:
Coat of Cypress

Lumber stretched up to day's eye
blinded in the shade of mossy green
and stole air and stole light
then grew knees beneath not seen
and held the scent of mystery.

Never quiet is the water and air
around surrounds her step
the lightning flies and statuesque turtles,
all balance and frame her depth,
her coat mottled in the fruits of bog
and the mane of cypress trees.

Minute by minute the swamp goes cold
day by day, she doesn't grow old,
as the trees and their knees above water
and log, the snapping gators' guise
and the lonely frog's stage to perform.

Warm days bring spring bugs to swarm,
bright green moss to join green lily-pad,
each tree shields them from the light above,
smothering the air to allow for butterfly and darting fly,
to zip and flutter around her horns and fur.

In that hidden, dark, secret home, her cove,
and where none dare to wander and roam,
to visit the cypress owned marshy home,
and stay a while safe from light,
but not from her deep, calm, level eyes
of focused, imprisoned dusky night.
