While Archibald lives the life of a jester, one would do well not to take him for a fool. He calls wits and charisma his own, combined with snappy and somewhat dark humor. It is only for these abilities that he is still alive… and that he sees the morning of each dawning day. Archibald’s life depends on the duchess’ laughter, and he is well aware of that. What looks easy and flippant to others in truth is a dangerous game for the jester, but one that has become his second nature. For years now, he has practiced his craft, performed at the court, and brought amusement to his bloodthirsty mistress. Archibald did not choose this life on his own accord. Born far away from the duchess’ territory, he earned his living as a travelling bard and jester, wandering from town to town to entertain the masses. It was so that his path eventually led him close to the castle, where he performed for the townsfolk. It was only a single joke at the duchess’ expenses that cost him his freedom. Katalin wanted him executed and his body displayed at the walls of her castle, but he begged her for a single chance to save his skin. When he appeared in front of her with racing heart and trembling claws, it was his talent that saved his life. The duchess’ laughter echoed from the walls of the throne room, and Archibald was spared. The duchess kept him as her court’s jester, eventually even returned his rights to him. She even granted him the gift of immortality, making her part of her undead court. While he now is a free man, Archibald found loyalty in his heart towards his new mistress, even though working for her is a dangerous commitment. But even more dangerous is his secret love to Isabella, the duchess’ maid. The two of them meet every other night, when the castle is asleep, spending sparse hours together before the sun rises again. Archibald would love nothing more than to take her as his rightful wife, but both of them know that such a thing would summon the duchess’ wrath… something neither of them would survive.
