ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Outside of the Viridian Labyrinth and Driftwood Drag, Singer's Brook and the surrounding river systems in the Windswept Plateau boast some of the most fertile wetlands in Sorineth. These ecosystems are vital to the planet's health: filtering massive quantities of air and water, providing rich biodiversity, and dispersing fresh water from the Sea of a Thousand Currents to the other ten elemental regions. But rich as they are, wetlands are fragile and easily damaged. With dragonkind ever expanding, and regions like fire and lightning constantly pushing the envelope on new technology, industry and development are taking their toll.

The Gladekeeper's children will viciously protect their waterways and keep them safe behind walls of dense trees, but the Tangled Wood's swamps are congested with refuse and poisoned runoff from nearby regions, smothered under a layer of Shade-tainted mud and magical fog. Due to its reputation as a peaceful, carefree paradise, the Windswept Plateau has become a popular tourist destination. Careless visitors trample new growth and disturb loosely packed soil. Hobbyists dump aggressive, competitive stock from their unwanted aquariums upstream and they rapidly take over, throwing the delicate balance of life in Singer's Brook askew.

Places of magic attract life, and places of life attract magic. The wind-scoured marshes of the Reedcleft Ascent are one such place: host to such a depth and breath of living creatures that magic can't help but thrive among them, attracting spirits of all kinds. Wiingaashk is a spirit of wild grasses and clean water, carried by the winds to the marshes surrounding the Singing Tower. When they arrived, the marsh was choked with invasive rotala, struggling to survive. In a fury, Wiingaashk set to work ripping out the rotala, root and all, and taught the dragons living in the tower how to properly cook its sharp, stringy leaves to prevent it going to waste and finding its way back into the soil. With careful intention, they coaxed the native grasses back out of their few remaining pockets, establishing them along the muddy, eroded stream banks. When fish began to tentatively emerge to spawn, Wiingaashk frightened away prospective fishers and sabotaged their lures.

It is hard work protecting the land from those who would drain it dry for their own gains, but it is work done gladly. Wiingaashk is small, and their power limited compared to larger spirits, but they are tenacious, and compassionate. Season after season, they shred destructive invasives, reinforce sagging embankments, and watch over the nests of every creature that calls the wetlands home. Their keen eyes know each current and pool better than anyone, their ears know the buzz and hum of every distinct insect in the lands they've chosen to protect.

Born with an unnaturally strong affinity for water magic, Wiingaashk is a living filter for the rivers and ponds that flow through Singer's Brook. Their long waving hair catches even the smallest particles of poison in the water and neutralizes them, releasing them as nutrients to feed the swamp. They braid their nest in the tall reeds and allow the world to embrace them and keep them safe, resting on the certainty that their guardianship of these wetlands will be reciprocated if the need ever arises.
