As an only child, Mushroom had longed for the companionship of a sibling. His mother had all but murdered him when he had hatched, and his father had spirited him away to the mainland so that he might escape her wrath. Mushroom still remembered the terrifying journey to shore, clutched tightly in his father’s jaws to keep him from drowning in the tumultuous sea. By the time they reached land, it was pitch black outside, dark clouds obscuring even the moon from view. Mushroom had been cold and wet, shivering uncontrollably, when his father abandoned him on shore, anxious to return to his mate.
Mushroom had whimpered quietly to himself while he dug a hole in the sand and curled up in it, hoping he wouldn’t freeze to death that night. Just as he was drifting off to sleep, the sound of footsteps approaching jolted him awake instantly, fear coursing through his veins. Two sets of emerald eyes gleamed in a darkness so thick, Mushroom couldn’t make out their silhouettes. Certain they were the eyes of some hungry predator come to devour him, Mushroom called out for his father, but Phorcys was long gone. Then, one of the sets of eyes spoke: “Hush now, dear brother, father has abandoned you just as he did to us. You have nothing to fear from your own siblings, for we shall be your family now.” As they drew close to him, Mushroom could finally make out the forms of two Gaolers, one male and one female. Although he had never met them, Mushroom couldn’t help but trust his sister’s words. Majesty gently plucked him from the wet sand and carried him to their cliffside den while Mire trailed behind, grooming the damp sand from his brother’s fur. From that moment forward, Mushroom was never again afraid, for now he understood what it meant to have a family. |
