Mire woke to the sun streaming into his seaside cave, waking him gently from a restless slumber. He missed his family. Or more specifically, he missed his father and siblings. Never again would he wake to the low rumble of Phorcys’ snores or hunt fish with his sisters in a raging current. Mire didn’t blame his father, he knew that Phorcys had done his best to give him and his sisters a future. He had finally found a clan that would take Mire in, but after living with the clan for a few weeks, Mire knew it wasn’t meant to be. He had missed the ocean too much. That was how the Gaoler had wound up here: in a small cave carved out of a rocky cliff face by the relentless waves. Soon it would be high tide: time to hunt... The salty spray of the waves put Mire’s mind at ease and he cracked open a few of the clams he had caught, floating on his back with his tail swishing lazily through the water. He was so busy prying a particularly difficult shell open that he nearly jumped out of his skin when a large something bumped into him from below the water’s surface. His first thought was that it was a predator, and Mire tensed, ready to defend himself. But when the creature finally emerged from the water, its head breaking the surface right next to him, Mire felt tears of joy spring to his eyes: it was his sister. Majesty chuckled heartily at her brother’s surprise, quite pleased with herself for scaring him half to death. But then tears began to well in her eyes too, and the siblings nuzzled one another affectionately, relieved to be reunited at last. |
