Since the Shade’s incursion into this realm and the shattering of the Pillar, things have lurked. Just out of sight. Just out of mind. But sometimes there’s a stretching in the fabric of the world. A slight thinning. And then those things are no longer beyond our senses. They claw and gnaw with toothless jowls at the universe itself until they wear a large enough hole to crawl through. In their many eyes are the echoes of madness and chaos. To stare into them is to become lost. To fall into a sea of galaxies that could be and might have been, cut adrift from all sense of time and space. From all sense of order. Falling… Falling… Though young, Nephtythys has inherited her mother’s magical aptitude, a talent she has directed solely towards the study of abjuration. Abjuration, the art of binding and sealing. Protection against the dark denizens of this world and all worlds. It is a treacherous yet vital art. She’s learned much in very little time- one has to when studying such magic. Those who don’t… their fates are only whispered of behind locked doors when the candles have burned low and shadows populate the cavernous rooms. So yes, Nephtythys has learned what she must to survive. To continue to press back against those things looking to feast upon the fabric of reality. It is a thin line between hunter and prey. Madness and sanity. She’s looked into the faces of her fellow students and seen the light in their eyes fracture and break, splitting into a kaleidoscope of colors that fragment over and over and over again. A never-ending cycle of madness. It’s why she cannot bear to look her mother in the eyes anymore, for fear she’ll see it again. Falling… Falling… Now that she has been granted the title of abjurer, it is time to leave her birth clan and carry out her duty. It may be cowardice, to abandon her mother to whatever demons plague her mind, but there are always greater matters to face. Worse demons to ward off. She can do that from anywhere in this world so anywhere is where she’ll go. |
