Emery
An echo from the past, a memory for the future

Adam and Evike experiment with taking souls and reincarnating them. Emery's soul was that of Echo, the original founder of Whitehaven (Sanctuary). Emery gets dreams of her past life and certain places can trigger a memory to emerge. Going to the new Whitehaven aids her in remembering more of her past life as Echo.

Echo was a skydancer who founded Whitehaven to help those in need of peace and rest. However, one day the clan is attacked and in order to protect others she released a wave of arcane magic. At this time it is unknown as to what exactly occurred after.

Because of this, Emery is skilled in the older arcane magic and runes but had trouble with newer methods. Emery is dedicated to recording the history of Whitehaven and uncovering what really happened the night of the attack. She is also interested in the ancient arcane secrets as well as reincarnation and the veil between life and death. She wonders if there are any other members of Whitehaven who have been reborn and recall their past life - or if any Whitehaven members (somehow) are alive today.

Impending storms of rain and snow.
Only then does the fire grow bright

Adam, with the help of Evike, brings the souls of dragons who have passed and places them into empty shells to breathe life back into them - imbuing the soul with their own essence. The fractures from death are filled and sealed. The fragments from life are pieced together and reformed.

The power and knowledge that Adam holds allows this to happen, and Evike helps to stabilize the soul in its new form. These “children” of theirs are sent into the world, whether it is as an egg or as young hatchlings. So far, none of the “children” have stayed with Adam and Evike. Emery and her nestmates were no different.

Emery hatched earlier than expected but was quickly sent off to Whitehaven. Her nature seemed to be her own, neither Adam nor Evike influencing that. However, an interest in ancient arcane artifacts may have been drawn from her old life and possibly amplified by Adam’s drive towards knowledge and Evike’s dedication.

Echo was the founder of Whitehaven, her followers willingly aiding in her goals for a place of rest and peace. Her talent with magic drew her to the Arcane lands. She crafted runes which they engraved around Whitehaven that were imbued with arcane magic that she had created to protect. The more she gave, the more the land seemed to give back - Whitehaven was where Echo was strongest.

Whitehaven grew as new members joined the family and many dragons passed through. The magic helped shield the area from those who did not need sanctuary and yet there came a day... A cloudy day when the atmosphere seemed to crackle. Echo paced around the great hall and the runes on the floor shifted to form new phrases. Her eyes flickered to the words as they changed rapidly.

A scream pierced the air and Echo fled to the door, heart pounding. The land seemed to pulse under her claws, warning of impending danger.

The skydancer, Amora, landed beside her with a grimace on her face. The residents of Whitehaven… her friends and family. She watched as some fled, others attempting to fight back. However, these dragons were trained for battle and they were not. Echo steeled her resolve and walked forward. As she did so, a dragon flew at her from above, but Amora took to the air to force the attacker back. Echo took a deep breath, and pushed the Arcane lands to release what they held. The magic obeyed. It used her as a conduit, crashing through her as it was released in waves. It hit the runes scattered around Whitehaven amplifying the energy and sending it bouncing back. She felt a warm hum, and her last thought in the moment was to protect.

Then the magic washed over the area, and her world fell dark.

She felt a tug, tethered to something - she was warm again, but why wasn’t she before? What was even before? Yet as the thoughts came they became muddled and lost again. It was dark and she was cozy. A vague memory seemed to flit by, one of a person or perhaps a place, but like the others, just as quickly as it came it was gone. Something that she should know was settling down in the depths of her mind, hidden for the time being.

When she came around again, she stretched a claw out and felt the need to break open whatever was holding her in. All of a sudden it was claustrophobic, the comfort fleeting in the need to escape. She clawed at the hard surface and eventually it gave way. The outside cracked and she was able to stick her head through. She was alone, but not for long.

Emery dreamed.

She dreamed of a stone building being built, the ground being dug up for the garden to be made, and large silver-barked trees with golden leaves surrounding the area. The atmosphere was light and cheery and she seemed to be part of a group of dragons who were gathered together. Emery watched as time passed and moss grew between the stones, ivy climbed the walls, and as new dragons came and went.

Emery’s field of vision moved down the hall and into the main room where a large circle was engraved into the stone and runes were drawn all around. As she looked around she realized she was never this tall…

Lurching up, she shook her head as the pink wildclaw she came to know as Evike came into the room. The decorations on their wings gleamed, and Emery was reminded of the golden leaves from her dreams. She ignored the wildclaw, trying to recall what she had just seen. There should be more.

Emery let out a small squeak as Evike picked her up and started walking out. “It is time for you to be sent to your new clan.” Evike brought her to where the large imperial, Adam, was working and set her down as they went to find something.

“Where am I going?” she asked - the large imperial had peaked her interest. Though Emery had seen him around, they hadn’t interacted beyond a short nod and a few words in greeting.

He glanced up from his papers, “To a clan who will take you in.”

“Where are they?” Emery persisted, sitting up straight so she could crane her neck up. Her pink wings lay draped against her back, partially dragging on the ground. “Who are they? What are you doing?”

“They are supposedly in the Arcane territory, a relatively new clan called Whitehaven Sanctuary.” Adam continued to flip through the pages, jotting down notes at the same time.

“They aren’t new,” Emery blurted out without thinking. The memory of a voice echoed in her mind, one she had only recalled hearing in her dreams. Whitehaven, where the lost are found. She found herself repeating this phrase out loud. “Whitehaven, where the lost are found.”

Adam peered up, a certain curiosity in his gaze, but it was then Evike returned. The sword they always carried was now accompanied by a satchel, and they grabbed Emery from the floor. “We will be off now, Adam. It shouldn’t be too long, Arcane isn’t too far and I’m dropping her off with Butterfly close to the border.”

Once outside, Evike spread their wings and in a few powerful pushes became airborne. Emery smiled, her wings were still too weak to fly, but she longed to touch the sky. The ground beneath them raced by and Emery was giddy knowing there was more of this to come.

“Evike, what’s gonna happen to my siblings?” Emery remembered seeing three other eggs.

“They’ll be sent to over clans, of course.”

She nodded, “Okay, like Whitehaven. I’m happy. I like Whitehaven.”

They fell into silence and the sun started to set. The two dragons spent most of their days like this, Emery asking questions and Evike patiently answering. Emery learned many new things in this way during the day. At night, Evike would sometimes stop in a nearby clan or town, and other times they spent the night under the stars. Every night when Emery closed her eyes to sleep she found herself back among the dragons of Whiteaven and the golden-leaved trees. And yet, almost always when she woke up the dream had blurred. Though, as they got closer, the fog that seemed to always come was slowly starting to falter. To break. To dissipate.

***

An orange skydancer waited on the worn path, embroidered silks draped over her large wings. Emery walked forward and tilted her head to the side. The skydancer bent over slightly, “Hello, I am Butterfly. I’ll be taking you to Whitehaven.”

Evike nodded and exchanged some words with Butterfly, though Emery was too curious about this new dragon to focus. They patted Emery on the head once. “Perhaps I’ll see you again one day.” With those parting words, they took to the sky and in mere moments were but a speck.

“Come now, we should get going.” Butterfly started to walk gesturing for Emery to follow. “It shouldn’t take us too long.”

They meandered down the pathway, the sunlight warming their backs. Emery’s tail waved as she unfolded her wings and made it a game to see how far she could jump. The gentle breeze made the grass sway as Emery happily chatted away, “I can’t wait to see all the gold trees.”

“Gold trees?” The skydancer looked down at the young imperial. “Did Evike tell you about those?”

“No, Evike said they haven’t been.” Emery kept a few starts ahead of Butterfly. “They’re gonna be so nice. The leaves are goldeny and the bark is like… silverish.” She nodded solemnly. “When there is dew on them they gleam in the light - very pretty.”

Butterfly gained a pensive look. “How did you hear about this?”

Emery stared into the distance. How did she know? Her dream. But how did she know that was Whitehaven. “I- I- I don’t know. I just know. I feel it.”

Butterfly didn’t go further, but small incidents like these occurred throughout the journey. She kept an eye on Emery hoping she’d reveal another piece off the puzzle and yet, the young imperial seemed almost oblivious to knowing more than she should.

***

The golden-leaved trees had come into view and Emery bounded ahead, curiosity bubbling, waiting to be let out. The arcane magic felt like it was crackling against her claws, stronger with each step. It didn’t hurt, no, but it wanted something. She turned to Butterfly to see if she felt it too, but Emery saw no reaction.

“Gold and silver trees!” Emery laughed and bounded forward. “Look, the green trees stop here and the gold ones start!”

Crossing the tree-line caused a shiver to run up her spine and when she blinked, she found herself disoriented. She had been taller but now she was down here again. She could have sworn Butterfly had been replaced by a different skydancer - the skydancer from her dreams. Butterfly nudged her to continue.

A pink fae came flying out of the woods. She looked at Emery and nodded to Butterfly in greeting. “Butterfly.”

“This is Eistra,” Butterfly supplied. “How have the others been doing with the archives?”

“Well enough. You know how they are. They don’t mind the task.” The fae motioned with a claw. “Would you like to come and see? You could bring Emery along to meet them.”

Emery followed Eistra and Butterfly, though she wanted to explore the grounds. Butterfly held the door open. Emery followed; however, as she put a foot over the threshold the world began to spin. She blinked. As she opened her eyes again, everything tilted back into place, and Emery found herself taller and larger than usual. Though it didn’t feel unusual. “Echo, look at all this! We are almost done building.”

“Yes, thank you all for your help!” It took Emery a moment, but she realized the words had come from her own mouth. She didn’t sound like herself. The words were clearer, the lilt smoother, and the tone wispier. “We are almost ready.”

“Yeah,” the skydancer nodded their head. “We still need your help finalizing the runes for the main room and we know you want to set up the archives yourself.”

Emery watched in fascination as she knew what was going to happen next but only seconds before it happened. “Yes, of course Amora. I can come look at the runes now. You know... you are just as good as I am when it comes to this.”

The skydancer, Amora, smiled, turning to walk down the hall. “This has been your dream, and you convinced us all to join you. It’s only right we ask you.”

“You know I really don’t mind, right?”

Amora’s tail flicked back and forth. “We know, but this is how we are doing it, so you can deal with it.”

Emery laughed, a soft laugh that surprised her. This wasn’t her. She’d never been to Whitehaven or seen this skydancer, and yet… she did. Emery knew this place, she knew what this memory was. The creation of Whitehaven, the final touches of magic needed. “It’s perfect, Amora. I hope it helps those in need.”

“Don’t be silly, Echo. Of course it will help. You helped us and now imagine what we can do all together with our own land.”

They entered the room and Amora went over to the large circle engraved into the stone floor. The inner circle shifted. The runes twisted and turned, glowing faintly. Though she knew they read, “where the lost are found” and then a symbol followed by “a sanctuary of peace created.”

Emery watched in fascination as Amora used her talons to point at the different runes around the outside of the circle. These ones didn’t shift - not yet. She approached and walked around to inspect each drawn rune. “It looks just as I knew it would: perfect, Amora.”

Something pressed down lightly on her shoulder, but no one was there. Emery blinked and after a moment of watching Amora’s mouth move with no sound, she found herself back with Butterfly and Eistra. When Emery tried to speak the words carried the lilt of Echo. “It was so clear this time. What happened?”

“You froze, tipped to the side, caught your balance but you didn’t respond,” Eistra replied.

“What happened, Emery?” Butterfly lifted her claw off her shoulder and peered at Emery.

Emery tried to push through the fog of what just happened. “I- saw- I just know… I see.” She shook her head after a moment, unable to articulate exactly what occurred. The memories were as clear as day, but how could she explain that she had just witnessed the building of Whitehaven? The building of the first Whitehaven. She ended up just whispering, “Where the lost are found.”

“Maybe we should find somewhere to sit.” Eistra led them down the hall and they found themselves in a large room. The circle was there, but Emery’s eyes widened and she murmured to herself, “The outer runes have changed.”

Eistra glanced at what Emery was looking at, “I think Butterfly is referencing some book to find the meaning of those runes.”

“We are working on it. None of us have studied the old arcane runes so we have been trying to reference some of the older record books.”

“Where the lost are found, a sanctuary of peace created. That's what the inner circle says.” Emery padded over to the circle and traced one of the runes with a claw. When she touched it, it glowed faintly like it did in the dream. “The outside…” Emery’s eyes trailed over the runes. It took a moment but something clicked into place. “A hidden sanctuary sought. Where the lost are found; peace for those who seek. A priestess is re-crowned. An omen from a raven, goes to those that need. Welcome to Whitehaven.”

Eistra’s tail twitched as she hovered in the air causing a small clanging as the decorations knocked against each other. “Did your parents or clan teach you that?”

Emery shook her head, “I just see it. You know, the words come to me.”

Butterfly made a humming sound and motion ahead. “Perhaps we should find Lydia, Nayru, and Andromeda.”

Eistra went first, Emery and Butterfly following her down a twisting staircase into an underground room. It stretched out on either side. The only well lit area being the center where some lanterns were set up and three fae were huddled around a table. Stacks of books were littered around them, and ink and quills were in hand. “Butterfly is here and has arrived with Emery.”

The red fae looked up. “I’m Lydia, pleasure to meet you. These two are Nayru and Andromeda.” Lydia’s voice held a touch more tone than the other faes, though that wasn’t saying much as they all seemed to speak in a constant monotone voice. “What can we do for you, Butterfly?”

Emery ambled over to the table as Butterfly approached and put her two claws on the edge to stand up on her hind legs. Emery pulled over one of the unopened books within reach. “What are you doing?”

“We are researching the history of Whitehaven and why it came to be abandoned.” The blue fae, Nayru, flew over to Emery and hovered in the air before her. “You see, Butterfly found this building in shambles and we have only recently found this room. We are hoping there are clues as to why.”

“Emery.” Butterfly motioned for Emery to come join her conversation. “There are things you… know about Whitehaven. Did someone tell you?”

Emery shuffled from foot to foot. Her heart seemed to stutter - what if they thought she was lying? “I just see it in my dreams, and I know it's real.”

Emery slowly revealed more and more about her dreams as she started to recall more. Butterfly and the others in Whitehaven worked to try and help her make sense of it. As time passed, Emery got used to the knowledge of Whitehaven, and she helped Butterfly piece together Whitehaven’s history. Yet there were things that didn’t make sense. Parts that were missing from the equation. What was there wasn't wrong, per se, just not yet finished.

The land of Whitehaven pulsed beneath her claws, still stained with the magic from her past life. The golden-silver trees were a product of a wealth of ancient magic settled in the ground as they grew from seedling to tree.

Emery scratched another rune into a slate of stone, the magic causing the lines to glow faintly in the evening light. Though as the night crept closer, she decided to go for a walk. Venturing off Whitehaven territory, she lifted a claw and summoned the magic. The energy pooled in her palm, giving off a familiar warmth. She smiled. As Echo she had loved magic and as Emery she still found great pleasure in using it and finding out what it could accomplish.

The grass grew thicker and she felt something sharp. Craning her neck, Emery scanned the area. A broken eggshell. It was empty and yet as she focused, she could feel the lingering air of death. The veil was thin yet far away for most, and this young one had slipped through; not strong enough to cling to life. Another shell indicated there were nestmates but the feeling of loss was gone from theirs. They had survived.

Taking her claws, she gently picked up the fragments of the eggs. Summoning the magic that swirled within, she pieced together the eggshells, picking the strongest pieces for the outside and the weaker parts for the inside. The magic followed the cracked lines, binding them together once again. Emery examined the now almost fully-formed shell made up of pieces of the siblings’ eggs. Together they are stronger. The only opening was the small hole at the top. Emery cradled it in on hand, looking around to see nothing but trees and greenery. Holding it close, she took flight and landed among the golden leaves that never failed to bring comfort.

She gazed down at the egg in her hand and wondered what she should do next. The newer versions of magic was something she struggled with and yet… maybe in those old books in the archives there was something. Or perhaps, Adam and Evike might know what to do. However, the egg was now stained with her magic, and that may interfere with most others aiding her. Emery shook her head. She had only scratched the surface of the knowledge she would need, for now she would keep the shell safe in her room.

***

Echo walked through the forest, and her eyes shifted, admiring the scenery. The land was gaining power, and the more care which it was given the better it flourished. She let some magic seep out of her claws, and the ground soaked it up as sand does water. She approached the small pond and dipped her tail into it, flicking it so water splashed upwards. The droplets rained down, causing small ripples to spread. Just how much of a ripple would Whitehaven have? Just how much of an echo Whitehaven would leave? She shook her head. All that mattered was that Whitehaven was helping others in some way. As long as she lived, Echo would try her best to make this happen.
