Sandwing. One of the pearlcatchers enlisted into the serein unit, however the dragoness had a hard time grasping what it meant. She hardly understood her life; a whirlwind from one memory to the next. It was exhausting, terrifying getting thrown around from harsh winds. Still, she had accepted the position with excitement. While she may get confused, she had no issue meeting the harsh requirements of the unit and made it with flying colors.

She had been born into a fire clan. One that had cherished her and took her slower development one step at a time. Throughout her growth, they never once doubted her. They remained patient, however danger struck the clan before it could pay off. A pack of mirror dragons, a large one at that. Sandwing hated to recount all the blurs, all the figures and shapes that resembled the attackers, in her mind. Still, she had preached there to be hundreds. Everyone knew this wasn't true, but none dared to speak up. They had destroyed her home, killed so many of the dragons that had taught her all that she knew, even if that had not been very much. She was one of the many young adults of the clan that had decidedly been spared, however not from a worse fate. Instead she was to be a slave. Treated not like a fellow dragon, only to be of service to her captors. For what she could understand, she would have rather been executed.

So much of her life, spent on the torture. How it drove her mad. New training, training to defend those who had wronged her. To be war fodder, to be nothing but a sacrifice. What could she do? They were not patient. Not like her clan had been. So much yelling, so much screaming. Sandwing couldn't tell you what she had done wrong, endless words ringing in her head with little to no meaning. If only she could give them such.

The pearlcatcher snarled, standing on her hind legs as mirrors cornered her. Monsters, they had been. Destroyed everything she knew, if only she could know why. She searched for her mother endlessly, a sea of fire and blood and so much pain. She was alive, she was so strong. Sandwing was sure she could fight off a few measly mirror dragons. Couldn't she? Sandwing scratched anothers side, wings flaring up at her outrage.

Needless to say, her attempts at fighting back intruders had failed. As fierce as the small adolescent was, she couldn't match the skills of the trained warriors. They did not halt her cries; the screams of the fallen and the taken ringing in their ears. (Sandwing knows they must hear it at the latest and coldest of nights, guilt seeping into them.) But they did nothing to show their pity, in fact their expressions hinted they enjoyed the spectacle in front of them. Sandwing thrashed in their hold, but gave up after many tireless hours of the repeated action. For years, it became her life. Moving from one place to another, fighting to become one of them. One of the monsters. She was always a prisoner there, always held under chains.

She had made it out, however. While certainly not unscathed, both physically and mentally, through some miracle of confusion and pain that Sandwing not dare recall she had escaped their hold. And she was the only one. She had not been the only soul to escape, but she had been the only soul to make it that far. Maybe, if she could have saved them, it would have been different. Maybe if she had been in a group, she could have fought off many of the monsters that had contended with her. Maybe she would have been able to navigate back to the lands of the flame. Maybe, she shouldn't have killed those of her clan that had escaped alongside her. Still, she had and she ended up here, being approached while alone and afraid. For they'd never know her crimes, they'd never know where half of her scratches were from.
