When Marnie Was There OST

Tora remembers little of her past... or, at least, that's what she once said. A lie told often enough to warp itself into her truth...

Somewhere deep in her mind, a dark spot from which she constantly flees, lay the memories of a brutal night of death and horror. Her own parents, her sisters, everyone but her... were gone. She doesn't remember the night spent burying them. She doesn't remember the day of scrubbing the stains from their - no, her - home. She doesn't remember the hours or days or weeks of tears and grief...

She only remembers her name and theirs, the name of the inn and the fact that it existed, and her hatchlinghood dream of traveling.

And so, she traveled.

qtBQEPf.pngEaJ7V3Z.pngqtBQEPf.png Wandering the Sunbeam Ruins brought a blessing to her lost soul; there, she met a pretty and young Pearlcatcher by the name of Haruko. She brought light back into Tora's bleak life, banishing the darkness like the sun banishes the night. Tora found herself gasping for the light for she'd long fallen into the darkness brought on by her past; it seemed to spread from that terrifying corner, a contagion within her own mind. Haruko - and her light - seemed to be the cure.

There, Tora found a home and a role. She poured what was left of her heart into training, rising the ranks and joining her dearest friend's noble guards. She was not happy, but at least she was not alone.

But... just like the sun and the night, Haruko's light could not stay with her to banish the darkness forever.

An injury sentenced her to early retirement. Tora could no longer maintain the level needed as Haruko's guard, and as such there was no place for her in Haruko's home. There was no place for her but the one she fled from years ago.

A pair of strangers wandered into her inn, haggard and dusty with ash. The pair paused, eyes widening at the tidy, decorated, and rather fancy-looking inn. A shelf of various objects stood beside a kitchen with a bubbling pot, and just beyond that was a small lounge and dining area.

"Greetings, weary travelers," Tora says, drying a set of pretty teacups with a towel.

"How much for a night, if you still have room?"

"Hm? Oh, yes, all of the rooms are available. The price is whatever you wish to pay. I only ask that you be mindful and tidy," the Skydancer responded, carefully arranging the teacups on the shelf.

"Truly? This place looks rather lovely, despite the outside."

"Mhmm," Tora hummed in response. "Business has been unfortunate as of late. I'm sure you can imagine why. I spend most days here alone now, but this used to be a rather popular spot. There were some wealthy regulars; I suppose you could say they paid for all this. Now, there's not much for me to do here but keep it clean..."

'Why? Why... why?,' she thought, but didn't say. Tora held back a sigh. She couldn't remember why; she only knew that she had to.

"Oh... that's quite sad," one of the guests murmured.

'It is sad... but why? Why is it sad?'

"Indeed it is, but alas there's nothing I can do about it but help the occasional traveler. So please, make yourselves at home. The rooms are upstairs; you'll find the staircase just past the dining area and to the left. There's some food already prepared in the kitchen, though if it's not to your taste feel free to make something for yourselves using the stores. We- I have several books, instruments, and toys on the shelf if you wish to entertain yourselves with them. There's teapots and cups as well if you wish to brew some tea, and if you'd like some alcohol I believe I may have some in the cellar. If you head out the back door, you'll find some lovely hot springs and lava baths!"

"A bath and some food sounds lovely," one of the visitors said, dropping a small pouch of money onto Tora's desk. "Oh, what a lovely cat!"

"Ah, that's Cornelia, my cat."

'Cornelia? I know that name... it sounds familiar...'

"You might see quite a few other cats around as well. Some of them are friendlier than others and there are some cat toys on the shelf should you wish to interact with them. Just, please be gentle and kind to them, and don't feed them. Really, quite a few of them got rather chubby from all the scraps guests gave them..." Tora explained.

"Though, if you meet a cat you really love, you're welcome to adopt it. Except for Cornelia there," Tora elaborated, giggling softly.

The pair thanked her, bowing their heads in gratitude before following her instructions. Before they could even climb the stairs, the innkeeper seemed to appear beside them. They started, and one briefly wondered how a dragoness dressed in armor and carrying a tea tray could move so silently.

"Is something the matter?"

"My apologies. I neglected to mention that the last four rooms on the left are unavailable. Please, do stay out of them and please leave the lamps lit."

"Oh? Alright. Other guests, I assume. We'll be sure to choose one of the others, thank you," one of the guests acknowledged, trotting up the stairs with their companion close behind.

The guests shivered a little - was that a draft up here? The second floor was certainly blander than the first. Nothing more than a thin rug stretching down the hall and a few lamps adorning the walls decorated it, though it was just as brightly lit as downstairs.

One lead the way, tiptoeing down the hall until the first door. It was unlocked, the room inside looking uninhabited. A simple but large bed sat in the middle with a small table beside it, and a pair of chairs sat to the left beside a window. What looked like an old painting clung to the wall just over the bed, and to the right stood a small table and shelf. It was rather simple, but at least decorated more than the hallway.

The pair settled in for the night, helping themselves to a meal and bath below, all the while finding it odd that they'd yet to see any of the other guests. Pushing it to the back of their minds, they climbed into bed, snuggling close and hoping for a pleasant tomorrow.

A creaking noise and ringing laughter woke them. Chills colder than anything summoned by the Southern Icefield ran through their bodies, immediately shocking the sleepiness out of them.

"Stay here," one said.

"No! No, I'll go with you," answered the other. The first, finding they, too, did not want to be alone, relented immediately, and the two guests peeked out of the room together.

They saw no one, but one door of the last four rooms on the left was wide open. The innkeeper meandered out of one, an odd smile splitting her face. One guest stepped out and asked if something was wrong, but she seemed not to hear. Creeping closer, the innkeeper still failed to notice them, even when they were close enough to make out her mumblings.

"Come now, Cornelia! Mother's waiting for you to go with her. Mika? Mika, are you awake?" the innkeeper called, walking to the next door and knocking. "Come on! We need to get it all ready; father's coming home today."

She pushed the door open, the smile widening and a giggle wriggling out of her. The guests exchanged a glance, freezing in place as the innkeeper swept past them close enough to scrape one armored wing on one of theirs. There was no reaction from the innkeeper save for a moment of hesitation and a glance backwards, but still she failed to acknowledge the two guests just behind her. The innkeeper vanished down the stairs, and both guests released the breath they hadn't realized they were holding.

They peeked into the rooms, even opening the other two the innkeeper warned them to avoid, finding... nothing? Nothing and no one, though the sheets were ruffled and open books rested on chairs and tables.

"W-who's she talking to?" one guest stammered to the other. The other gave them a wide-eyed look, saying they didn't know, and after a moment of staring into each other's eyes, both guests came to the silent decision to leave as soon as they could. Leave now.

They scrambled to grab what little belongings they had, racing downstairs and throwing a hasty payment and thanks to the innkeeper. Still, the innkeeper didn't respond, standing frozen as the treasure clattered to the floor in a careless pile. The guests bolted outside, spreading their wings and flying away into the night, but they were still close enough to hear a horrible, heart-rendering scream.
