She must know and understand every given law by heart - and she must enforce it to the fullest extent. The knowledge that she or someone else is breaking a rule will eat away at her. It keeps her up at night, with thoughts about how awful she is flowing into her mind in perfect accordance to the rhythm of her rapidly pounding heart. Those who break rules are selfish - they are not only hurting themselves, but everyone around them, inspiring the wrath of authority figures upon all. It matters not what the rules are. Following them keeps everyone safe. And those who do not care to listen to authority must be persuaded. It is easy to trace this overwhelming, ever-present phobia to its roots. Tandem was born into a large migratory Mirror pack. Her family strongly believed in upholding the ideals of the Plaguebringer and took it upon themselves to act as their own versions of the Wandering Contagion. The pack roamed all of Sornieth and ruthlessly slaughtered everything in their wake, earning a terrible reputation for both the Plaguebringer and Mirrors. Tandem's father ruled the pack with an iron fist, demanding his position as leader despite most Mirror packs being leaderless. He would not allow any of his family to break free from the pack, nor to abstain from the massacres. Those who showed any hesitance when given an order, no matter how minute, would be made into an example in front of the rest of the family. Tandem herself bears many scars inflicted by her father. She despised seeing her family be hurt and suffering her father's wrath, so she took it upon herself to ensure everyone followed orders. She hovered over everyone and would silence any hint of critique towards their pack's lifestyle. Often, she would even need to discipline her packmates herself to keep them from a worse, more painful punishment at the claws of her father. Tandem truly believed she was saving her packmates from a terrible fate by enforcing her father's word. He finally met his own terrible fate when he decided to target Purgatory. Against anything that was not the sole worship of the Plaguebringer, Tandem's father decided to destroy the cult clan. Lusolth's followers were powerful, however, and ruled primarily by love, not fear. Once her father was slain by the leader of Purgatory himself, most of Tandem's family fled together into the Scarred Wasteland. Overwhelmed by the loss of her father and unsure how to operate in a world without a strict authority figure, Tandem stayed in the blood of the battlefield and wept. Lusolth saw potential in her and approached, offering to provide her a home and structure in Purgatory. Grateful, Tandem accepted. She did not stay for long, however. Vitis, too, saw potential in Tandem, and took her in as an apprentice. Tandem embraced the beliefs and hierarchy of Purgatory - so long as she had something to believe in and someone to follow, she was happy. Enforcing respect of Lusolth and his words came naturally. Tandem had none of the subtlety of her fellow Inquisitor, however. When a hatchling publicly asked her how anyone could alchemize a deity, Tandem ripped him to shreds in front of everyone - making an example, as her father would do. Lusolth knew that his clan could not prosper when ruled by fear. Tandem was immediately exiled and left with more scars than when she joined. Devastated, she took to roaming Sornieth, trying desperately to find a place where she could belong. It was not long before she came across a ruined clan. Speaking to those within made her feel right at home. A rigid, strict hierarchy with clearly defined leaders was her dream. She begged to join The Scavengers, citing her loyalty and love of structure as reasons to permit her into their society. Within the clan, Snow gave her the role of Hatchling Taker. She was to take imperfect hatchlings and abandon them outside the territory. At first, she didn't mind her job. She was serving her clan, she was helping keep order. But then, Tandem started to see the resentment in the mother's eyes, the backs turned to her. She noticed how alone she was, and at long last, starting to feel something other than crippling fear. She felt wrong. Tandem went to Ravenfeather, the strongest dragon in the clan besides Snow. When she pledged her loyalty to helping drive Snow out, she was taken under her wing. Tandem and several other dragons drove Snow and Queen out, and then helped settle the dragons who stayed after. Tandem still does not forgive herself. How can she? She ruined mother's lives, she served to spread horrible ideals. She holds a deep hatred for herself within, but outwardly tries to help dragons the best that she can. Now, Tandem makes up for her past by helping mother dragons give birth safely, somewhat of a midwife. Though there is no one in the clan left alive that knows what she once did, besides Ravenfeather and Daisy, she can't forget.
