Born to one of the various Dark Sclera Clans around Sornieth, Canaan's egg was somehow lost or displaced, and he hatched on the border between Light and Shadow, most likely carried there by G1 egg traders. Most orphanages refused him due to his Dark Sclera eyes, but he came to Home at a young enough age that he doesn't remember much of that whole ordeal. Now known around Home as a brilliant and wonderfully talented young dragon, Canaan tends to avoid the other Dark Sclera dragons around Home. Most of them actually grew up in Dark Sclera society, and despite the fact that Canaan has always been perfectly normal and well-adjusted, seeing them struggle to integrate themselves into life at Home makes him worry that he'll someday face the same challenges. Regardless, most dragons are never aware of his secret worries and fears - usually confident, friendly, and well-spoken, Canaan typically presents himself as a very well-put-together dragon.

Quiet, soft-spoken, and well-spoken, Canaan is proud and his confidence can often come across as arrogance to those who don't know him well. He simply knows his abilities well and isn't interested in false modesty. Excellent at working under pressure and unflappable even in the face of uncertain odds, he is a simply wonderful dragon for a crisis. Gifted Light magicians are often also adept at the art of neutralizing, which is basically using Light magic to nullify the effects of another dragon's magic, and this is Canaan's specialty. By the time he could fly, he could nullify an entire room of magicians twice his age, and by now he can give even master magicians a run for their money. Despite his well-put-together appearances, however, Canaan has certainly earned his spot in Helheim Hall. Archaeology is his passion, and as a hatchling, he was in detention more often than not for his attempts to sneak off to explore the Hewn City. Extremely interested in the ancient and the unknown, his area of historical specialty is the Shade and its effects on Light culture where it lingers. His unflappable nature makes him untrustworthy; he can lie as easily as he breathes and can be very manipulative when he has to be. He always feels terribly guilty about it, worrying that he's conforming to Dark Sclera stereotypes, but it's still a skill he'll utilize if he feels he has to. Canaan's greatest fear is that he's actually not a good dragon at all (in fact, he worries he's secretly a demon or a monster or something equally unlovable), and he tends to pull away from others as a result. Despite this, he's made it clear that he's a very clever, curious, and loyal friend, and he knows he can count on the other dragons in his Hall and at Home - and they know they can count on him.

Behind the Name...

Canaan (כְּנַעַן in Hebrew) is a Semitic-language name with uncertain etymology. It might come from the Hebrew root kn, meaning "to be low," and might thus be translated as either "lowlands" or "the lowly."
