"The voices may not always be right, but they have good ideas."

Demon. that is what he was, summoned to grant ones darkest desire or something else entirely in exchange for one's soul. he was no different, finding dragons fun playthings and of little use beyond petty amusement, this was why he frequented gatherings and celebrations. he was not often an invited guest, but not many tried to stop him as his name- or one he wanted to go by- would appear on their list. his interest had never remained on one dragoness until he met her.

Demon. Monster. Abomination.
He was all of these things and much more, in the clan he was born to hatchlings were offered to the shade as a host to share the same form. some hatchlings didn't make it and were turned into uncontrol able abominations with a desire for destruction and bloodshed. hatchlings of his bloodline seemed to have a higher chance of being successfully bound, he had been one such success and shared his form with a bit of the Shade which spoke with him often. he was still a demon as his great grandmother had been, although she was a much higher ranking demon than he was, from what he knew, which was little better than rumor, he could be summoned and do things that magic simply couldn't explain and that he was rather proud of.
He, as a young adolescent, grew restless and bored with what was expected of him and the demands on his already limited patience. he took to sneaking away to explore the dragons' realm, where the weather was so much nicer and the sun chased most of the shadows away to hiding places where they waited for it's decent. he found a small town, he slipped in wanting to see what was going on and how things ran; he found it dull and found himself wanting something.

The town was small yet seemed to flourish and Dissonance found his curiosity peeked although his boredom was not satisfied in the slightest. he found his interest peeked by a old castle although the feeling he got when he looked at it was one of dread. the voice in his head screamed to avoid the castle and the surrounding fields and for awhile he did, gathering information by talking to the locals and reading the few books the town kept.
He eventually went out to the forest during the day, just a walk through the woods to occupy him for a time, he saw a hound he assumed a hunter had lost. her pelt was red as blood and lovely to see, he watched as she raced beside him coming close enough to see yet far enough he could not touch her, she looked like a large fox and swift as the wind, but he noticed beneath her paws flower grew, small bunches appearing as she stood.

When he went back to the town he took to asking those in a tavern about the red hound and was met with laughter.

"So ya saw her, did ya!" one guardian bellowed.
"I did, flower grew where her paws touched." Dissonance said looking impatient.
"She's the guardian of the forests, gentle as a dream and twice as lovely." a ridgeback sighed "What I wouldn't give to add her to my pack of hunting dogs!"
"Don't let her fool ya!" a snapper rumbled "If you act disrespectfully to the land or woods she'll make ya regret looking her woods at all!"

the group continued talking and Dissonance listened quietly only speaking when they strayed from the topic. he eventually went to an inn and paid for a room wanting some sleep before he explored the town and surrounding woods.

Dissonance made a point of going into the woods and waiting to see her, the red hound, he often took a book with him reading quietly while sitting under a tree. he knew when she started coming closer, the voices in his head quieted almost instantly although they were still there in the back of his mind. the red hound crept closer to him after a few days of his reading under the trees, he never tried to reach out to her and she seemed more curious of him than anything.
He continued this for a month or so, he had nowhere to go, nowhere to be, no one waiting for him in a different clan so he could stay and sate his curiosity. going to his room at the inn he settled in a bed, he settled in with his book wanting to read for a bit before going to bed, his mind wandered to the ruins of the castle, the forest, and the fields all outside of the town walls.

He found himself looking outside to the still town, dark windows and the glow of candles and hearth fires glowing contently. the voices whispered, he knew the shade didn't like him being in this town yet they wouldn't tell him why or even give him an idea they were so insistent to leave, even more so now that the red hound was showing interest in him.
He fell asleep watching the town and the stars.

A castle stood in a field of flowers and a dragoness stood in the flowers watching him as he walked toward her. she was lovely, a light orange color that faded into nearing pink at her belly, her eyes were a beautiful yellow; she sat in a large patch of flowers watching in peacefully.

"You are tainted." she said sadly.
"Tainted?" he asked stopping in front of her.
"You hear them, don't you?" she asked standing "Hear their hissing whispers and their lies, demands for blood and destruction."
He watched as she started pacing "I don't understand." he said confused.
"The shade." she snarled stopping and looking at him "They scream in your head, I can smell the taint, but... you didn't bring them here." she sighed.
he sat and looked at her, lifting a wing in a offer of comfort "You fight them?"
She eyed him suspiciously, but sat beside him "I do. My parents and I keep this town safe until they sleep." she said sounding tired.

She stood suddenly growling at several tendrils of the shade creeping to their flowery bed, Dissonance huffed and flicked his wing making the pieces of the shade pause before retreating. he scowled those had been his brother's creeping possessors, they only listened to him as a curtesy and he knew it.

"You helped me." she said surprised "Why?"
"Curiosity." He said "I have never met a hound who turns into a lovely dragoness."
She looked startled "I am a creature of the wild, not a pet to be praised and appeased with scraps!"
Dissonance chuckled "No, You are a creature of moonlight and blood. I see how it's colored your pelt."

The night was spent in the field, laughing and sharing stories, he didn't see those who shared his mind while in her company, and by the end of the night he knew her name was Amaranth. the Spring Hound.

He woke at break of day to the memory of warm fur and promises of other meetings.

Hor-divider-640.png
The next few weeks were spent much the same, reading and interacting with those of the town, laughing with those at the tavern, and sitting with the warm weight of a red hound against his side as he read.

The last time he dreamt of her her castle was being attacked by the shade, fragments he didn't recognize and could not shoo away. he raced to the ruins and leaped into a long broken window and raced up the stairs following the inky blackness up several flights of stairs and slammed into a room the sound of growling was coming through.

Dissonance saw Amaranth fighting and he leaped in front of her, sharp claws tearing into the inky shadows in front of him a low snarl echoing from deep in his chest. the fight was not one he had a hope of winning as fighting shadows was an impossible feat and he could only do so much.

"Wake my Hound." a soft familiar voice whispered.

He felt a sharp pain and suddenly woke.

it didn't take him long to find Amaranth and leave with her, she had nothing to keep her at the town anymore with both parents sleeping in hidden places and the Shade crawling all through her castle, they traveled finding a den in the tangled woods. anywhere they traveled flowers and crops thrived and Amaranth made a point of traveling the near by areas every chance she got with Dissonance close beside her, keeping her safe and keeping her company.
