"The lost never find the answer until the end."

Unforgiving head and shifting sands often hide more than lost gold and riches, dangers move through the sands luring the lost and weary to salvation or doom. An answer decides their fate....

This is the tale of the Barghest Sphinx...

Only darkness brought respite from the desert’s heat. A cloudless sky was alight with the brilliant speckling of constellations as the full moon gleamed down, an opaque eye staring from the heavens. It looked now upon the vast dunes of the desert, the fragile ruins of a lost city jutting from the sands. There, nestled amidst the rubble of grandeur, three luminous eggs glowed as brightly as the moon itself.

Their mother, a great beast ensnared in tattered cloth, coiled around her nest, her massive form partially submerged beneath the sand. Finally, the shells began to crack, flaking away and crumbling into fine dust as the hatchlings emerged. They took on the hues of the desert, yet their forms were transparent, flickering spirit-like beneath the light of the moon.

The first child took to riddles. She appears to the lost, a faded beast that ripples like a mirage in the desert heat. A terrible smile crosses her face as she whispers in a voice as dry and cracked as the landscape that surrounds her. “Tell me. . .” she begins. “Answer correctly and I shall show you the way out of this desert”.

Lost travelers stare up at her with weary eyes. “And what if I answer incorrectly?” At that the beast’s smile widens and a glint of hunger appears in her eyes.

She adorned herself with rags and bones, most old and bleached in the unforgiving sun of her desert it was hardly surprising when a dragon collapsed in the shade to hide as best it could, the fae never heard her approach until it was far too late.
Rising out of the sands like a beast of old the skull which adorned her head and hid her yellow eyes glinted dully in the sun. the fae let out a started scream as the sand finished falling from her back and she shook to rid herself of the last of it and pinned the small creature with her eyes.

"Tell me, answer my riddle correctly and I'll show you a safe path out of the desert." she crooned
"A-and i-if I answer w-wrong?" it asked, fear rolling off of the small dragon in waves.
She chuckled low and throatily "I suppose you'll just have to hope you answer correctly."

She hummed thoughtfully "It is cold and it is hot. It is white and it is dark. It is stone and it is war. It's true nature is of flesh And it's color is red. what is it?" many times she had asked this riddle and many times she had been disappointed by the answer she was given.
"T-the emotions of sentient creatures?" the small drake asked.
"Incorrect." she rasped with a toothy grin.
A flash of teeth was the last thing her victims saw.

She watched silently as a small village was built near her hunting grounds and she reveled in the abundant meals travelers to and from the villages brought her, eating when hungry rather than when any opportunity presented it's self allowed her to remain lean and well muscled. her favored meals were the ones who tried to run after answering her wrong, they did not survive, simply died tired by her claws, but their pleas still ran in the air as did their screams.
She turned to hunting from their numbers, child or adult it mattered little to her and soon those in the village feared "the wolf of the sands" as they deemed her. the name amused her to no end and she chose to wrap herself in tattered cloth and bones as well as a few feathers that she found, first to keep the sun off her dark scales and second to add to the fear she invoked.

She spent many a long year this way, alone, and soon found that she had grown lonely in her isolation, not that any dragon had held her interest long enough for her to consider keeping for any length of time. it wasn't long before the village sent hunters out to find and rid the village of her threat, she took great joy in ripping these hunters to shreds even going so far as to dump that was left by the village entrance, partially eaten at times.
Living as she did she had made more than a few bolt holes to hide from both the sun's unforgiving heat and those who would hunt her for being a monster, it made her life all the easier knowing all the hidden places and ancient. although she didn't gather treasure from the tombs she entered, between grave robbers and her own respect for the dead she never found the want.

It was a surge of magic that interrupted her sleep, the sense that it was coming from the village confused her as she regained her bearings, whatever had disturbed her had an unusual magic to it and made her fur stand on end. it was early the next morning that another hunter came, this one paid closer attention to his path and she wondered as she watched him if he would loose his way or if he would keep his path. her answer came when he stopped in the scant shade offered by some barren trees and her fur stood on end, magic, powerful magic, she bore her teeth out of instinct as he rested and thought of simply killing him.
In the end she rose from her hiding spot and began her... offer... only to b interrupted.

"I am Lorrian of the Witchborn! I own you no answers ChildEater!" he growled
Child Eater? this was something she had never been called and thought might have two different meanings between them "Then it will be my pleasure to feast Witch Child."

Their fight was a long and tiring one as she could not seem to gain more of an advantage on him nor could he pin her although his magic thrummed in the air and made every hair on her stand at attention as she reacted on instinct.
Soon enough though she backed away and watched as he left limping and bleeding into the sand, she followed at a distance thinking he would make easier prey once exhaustion had taken hold. finally he collapsed and she moved in looking his features over she found he had lupine features which would have driven most dragoness away from him in fright.

She circled him before reaching a paw out, unsure what made his magic so powerful and unwilling to harm herself even in an attempt to potentially help- although why she could not say. her paw touched his shoulder and she pulled him to lay on his back, seeing his eyes open just a crack she smiled toothily.

"You fight well Witch Child, maybe you are worthy of more than your kin would grant to you."

She watched his eyes close and huffed, shoving her shoulder under him she managed to lift his smaller form and walked back to one of her dens, dropping him on a pile of furs and cloth she set about wrapping and tending to his wounds.

After several days he woke again, he looked at the bandages covering his shoulders, arm, and torso. he look to the small fire which kept the cavern lit and illuminated the face of the beast as she watched him, amusement lighting her yellow eyes.

"What amuses you, Beast?" he groaned as he rolled onto his stomach.
"You share blood with a cursed one and so share his appearance." she chuckled.
"You are strange, but I suppose I owe you my thanks." he huffed
"You are welcome." she said.
"What are you?" he asked.
"A Barghest, as you are now."
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Those descended from the original eight, those who share their cursed blood will spread the curse to their young and to those survive their attacks." she said ominously before pinning him with a look "You survived, you are a bitten."
She watched him shift on his bed uncomfortably "Am I to just give up my left in my clan?"
"Most do from what I have hear, yes. the Curse is much like a werewolf's curse, if your control ever slips within the clan..." she trailed off.
"The clan never liked me overly much." he dismissed obviously thinking of someone else.

It was not long before he left, finding the desert far too uncomfortable with his obsidian fur and Sphinx found herself alone again, but with a direction to go if she so chose. she was unsure, but soon loneliness and the promise of decent company drew her from her familiar home and to the woods where she found a pack and found Lorrian separating herbs.
She crouched behind him and sprang allowing the tussle to remain playful until she leaped away and a new game began, Chase. she raced until she crashed into a clearing, feeling a weight on her back and paws on her shoulder she fell to the ground laughing. they stayed there for some time before Lorrian got to his paws and showed her around the territory.

Allowing him to claim her for a mate Sphinx continues to travel between the desert and her new home, always returning to her lover and the family she found; she has also taken to claiming threats in the territory in her usual way.
