Biography

Ligurrio Subject #84 The night was dark. Ghastly howls and shrieks echoed through the Ghostlight Ruins as a breathless Guardian sprinted through the weeds and cobbles. His hide was covered in scratches dripping with blood, his face had a blast mark from a magical attack on it. One icy eye was bruised shut, the other was wide with fear. He could hear the disoriented spirit stomping behind him, drawing nearer, its empty sockets staring at him hungrily. He ran faster, his heart pumping, his mind racing, tears beginning to dribble down his face. He spread his wings, flapping them awkwardly and out of sync, desperate to get off the ground. His body was lifted into the air for a moment before he came crashing back down again, almost losing his footing. He was barely a week old, just old enough to join a team in the coliseum. He had been destined to be fodder, trained to level seven and then sold for exaltation. He had never even learned to fly. Then, this spirit had come out of nowhere and attacked them, dropping the two seasoned fighters he had been assigned to and then coming after him. He knew he didn't stand a chance, and soon enough, if he couldn't get off the ground his legs would tire and he would collapse. He spread his wings again, flapping them furiously, catching the air and leaping upwards, gliding and flapping and gliding again until he had enough altitude to finally escape the monster. He may have figured out how to fly, but he had no clue about how to land. He flew for a long time, getting close to the ground but quickly flapping his wings as fear and insecurity gripped him. Finally, his weak muscles began to burn and fail him. He descended quickly into the forest beneath him, his legs scraping against the ground as he tumbled, becoming even more battered and bruised than he already had been, until finally he ground to a halt. He could barely lift his body and lay at the base of a tree, his vision swimming as he drifted in and out of consciousness. He woke up, his body free of injury and the shadowed woods around him now a deep burning orange. He could smell the smoke of a fire somewhere nearby, but he felt no fear. He walked among the trees, not as a stranger, but as a denizen, recognizing every tree, shrub, and root. He felt himself being pulled towards something he could not see, but he felt whatever it was, it was a friend, and it had something for him. The smell of smoke intensified, the orange glow grew brighter, and suddenly he was stepping into a clearing. Ahead of him was a rise, silhouetted by a blazing fire consuming the forest beyond and sending embers into the sky like fiery stars resuming their positions in the night. He stared in awe, sweat dampening his brow from the heat, as his eyes settled on the peak of the rise. A stag, black with bright eyes, stood there staring back at him. It nodded its head at the Guardian, gesturing towards the ground. He looked down and saw a hoofprint among the ash and charred soil. Gingerly, he lifted his foot and place it on the print. A bright flash consumed his vision in an instant, and he was asleep once more. When he awoke, his body was tangle in brambles and mushrooms. The forest had returned to its deep shades of purples and blues, though his wounds had been reduced to scars. As he stood himself back up, he was surprised to find that the flora moved away from him at his request. He realized that he was somehow connected to the forest around him, feeling the vibrations and vivacity of the life that thrived in the darkness. Slowly but surely, he learned to thrive as well, using his newfound abilities to become one with the Tangled Wood. |
