Biography
J A V I E R
Uh-oh, looks like this Fae wandered a little too far from his home lair (Alligatorsight #118679), and now he's off to see the world! If you ever feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off to See the World' thread, here. If you don't want another traveler in return, you can also drop him off at the Traveling Dragon Rest Hub! |
Javier was a little disappointed that his first stop was uneventful, though he met many other dragons when he traveled on to the rest hub. While he was there, he heard stories about another inn, one that seemed hybridized with a library. Intrigued, he flew from Wind territory to Light, where he found the Sunbeam Lanternhouse. He interviewed Kukulcan about the rumors he had heard; the Coatl, much surprised, introduced him to Vianne. The Guardian, in turn, was unimpressed with his desire to learn a new language, but grudgingly allowed him into the Vault, home of the Sunbeam Lanternhouse's sprawling library. She informed him that the Vault made many dragons uncomfortable, that its corridors were full of strange noises and weird shadows, and that she would always be nearby if he wanted to leave, which he was free to do at any time. Javier found her indifferent delivery of these warnings a bit off-putting, but he wasn't going to leave having done no research at all. Therefore he borrowed a room next to Vianne's and set to work looking for books on learning Coatl. He was disappointed in the Lanternhouse's selection - apparently it was not an interest of Vianne's - and the poor lighting in his room made it difficult to concentrate on the few books he'd found; the shadows seemed to move when he focused on their words. Vianne granted him permission to take the books to the sunny Meadow, and for a few days, Javier basked in warm sunlight, happily immersed in his research. But he was still seeing shadows at the corners of his eyes. It was interfering with his concentration and his mood. He ended up abandoning his research and having a fling to distract himself, and for a few days, it worked. After his sons were born, he was able to return to his study with renewed zeal. But only for a time. The shadows returned, flickering just out of his sight. He decided it was time to move on. A brief stay at the border of the Scarred Wasteland and Tangled Wood proved to have various interesting dragons. Javier was interested in learning about the various regions they came from, but left a few days later. Javiers next stop was a Arcane clan which everyone he talked to referred to as Serpents Clan. Lots of dragons welcomed him into the clan, setting up a personal nest might have been the first give away but it wasn’t until a couple days after that he realized, “This clan has never had a traveling dragon before!” As the word spread, dragons were a little confused, a lot were disappointed that he wasn’t staying forever. But mostly the dragons became curious, and started asking about his ventures. Since Javier grew up with travelers it was wild to him that the clan had never had one before. One dragon Javier became especially close with was Juniper, who also speaks multiple languages through she never really flaunted it. It was Junipers idea to fill a couple scrolls with stories in his languages to leave at the clan library, so everyone could try learning a bit even after he’s left. Flair's colony was welcoming, though without a permanent home they had little in the way of a library. But they did host travelers regularly, and Javier had some lovely conversations with Warkar, a skydancer who told him some of the stories that previous travelers had left here, and Jubilee, an imperial musician who seemed enraptured by the Emperor that the colony moved to avoid. Jubilee's melancholy songs seemed to make the shadows at the edges of Javier's vision flicker up again, and he had some trepidation about traveling with the imperial. But, surely the young traveler wouldn't mean him harm? And maybe he could learn something more. When Javier and his traveling companion arrived at the Starfall Isles, they were welcomed a cheery little clan. He decided to study ancient languages at the Oculus of the Eleven. Javier returned every day, determined to make the most of his visit. An attendant soon took notice of his studying. “Psst! We got something that might interest you! They’re runestones from an ancient lair. We normally wouldn’t let visitors see something this new until they’ve been sorted...but I think I can trust you,” she whispered. “My assistant had to leave and I have an important meeting this evening. If you help me sort the stones, you’ll get to see them before anyone else. And touch them! For free! Can you help out?” Ancient runestones? Of course he would help! The attendant led him into a lower section of the archives and to one of the storage rooms. It was crammed with hundreds of glowing runestones were stacked on every table. And every chair. And the floor. “Can you believe they just dumped these in here without organizing them? New exaltees are the worst!” Together the two of them flipped the runestones and separated them into crates according to their symbols. With teamwork, it felt almost like a game! Clan. Cloud. Ice. Lightning. Mind. Pillar. Javier spent ages admiring at the variety of bright symbols, the different writing styles and dialects, and the number of elements (if some could even be called that.) Deciphering ancient runes was a brilliant way for him to review what he’d just learned. But when he looked up, the attendant was gone. “Hello?” Silence. Right, she said she had an important meeting. Was it evening already? Javier didn’t know. No problem, he could finish sorting these last few stones. It would be rude not to. For the first time he realized how tired he was; tired to the tips of his wings and claws. How could he be so absorbed in this task when his head felt so fuzzy? When was the last time he’d taken a break? His eyes felt strained. The storage room seemed so much bigger when it wasn’t filled with artifacts. And it felt darker. Maybe it was...if it really was evening. Was it? One runestone left. He could do this. Javier flipped it over. Chaos. This last stone didn’t glow. The symbol glared balefully at him like an eye. Or a target. Darkness seemed to fill every corner and shift with every breath he took. The shadows were back again. Javier fled. ___ He didn’t join the clan for dinner that night; opting to curl up in his temporary nest instead. Before long he heard the footsteps of his traveling companion. “You missed tonight’s songs,” Jubilee flatly noted. “I wrote new ones about Imperials.” “Sorry, Jube. Maybe tomorrow.” Tomorrow would be better. There were still new things to learn, after all. And now he had a lead. What was Chaos? It's been a few weeks since his incident at the Oculus. He and Jubilee are currently traveling with a traveling caravan they met while leaving the Starfall Isles. So far it's been peaceful. They spent days traveling and by night they would camp. For now, it seems like the shadows have disappeared. He knew better though. His mind went back to Chaos. Weeks became months. Javier had long since separated from Jubilee. After one of their songs brought visions of shadows once more, Javier had snapped and run away. He didn't remember what he had said or done at the time, but he felt rather bad about it now that he was in a lucid state of mind. He hoped Jubilee was doing well out there... Instead, Javier had found himself in a tropical resort in Nature country. The welcoming atmosphere did much to quell his disturbing visions, but try as he might he could not keep his mind off that awful rune he'd seen. Why had it caused the shadows to return so aggressively? Was there a connection...? Although he would have loved to stay there forever, he had to know. So he reluctantly flew off, bracing himself for the difficult journey ahead. After long stretches of nothing but barren land, Javier came across evidence of life. A ramshackle building, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. As strange as it was, Javier came down to land anyways. "Hello?" he called into the empty room. Not even an echo returned. The place seemed to be an abandoned bookshop, or library. The walls were lined with shelves of dusty, louse-infested tomes, and long-empty chairs invited Javier to sit down at one of the rickety wooden tables. He was uninclined to do so, but he was curious about what kind of old literature might be hiding within this place. He skimmed the spines of some of the shelved books, gingerly brushing away some of the dust so he could read their titles: Temper, Temper: Rebellion in the Ashfall Waste Evolution of Agriculture in Sornieth Unveiled: History of the Veilspun Ah, history. Not Javier's cup of tea, although he did find it interesting to learn how linguistic trends coincided with historical events. His eyes wandered towards the table in this section, and he realized there had already been a few books pulled out and left scattered upon it. Curiously, he examined more closely. They were not nearly as dusty as the ones on the shelves...how recently had they been pulled? He read the titles: Unlocking the Secrets of the Pillar Dawn of the First Age Then There Were Four: Birth of the Deities All about the earliest era of Sornieth...someone had been doing research. One book had been left open. "History of The Second Age". He skimmed the page. Theocracy prospered, adhering rigidly to the runes that adorned the Pillar's tiers. Acolytes of each element spent their devoted lives to understanding their meaning, witnessing their presence and role in nature. Even with their differences, the sects never embroiled themselves in confrontation. Reverence was paid wholly to the Pillar, and not to its singular layers. The arcane words of magi became the law and total governance of the realm. Runes...could this book hold information about the Chaos rune...? But as societies grew more diverse focus on the elements began to diminish. Tribes became kingdoms, concerned only with securing their place in the world, which was now abundant with life. Conquest paved the way towards innovations in agriculture, warfare, housing, and technology. Sects of the ancient elemental castes still existed; however, they were drowned out by the bustle of commerce and industry. These cabalistic groups still worshiped the Pillar. Chosen individuals claimed to have thaumaturgic connections that allowed them to manipulate mystical energies surrounding it. These claims were initially discounted and many elementalists were imprisoned for their unsettling zealotry. Witnessing the decline of their rule, these magi became increasingly hostile. Attacks on settlements and government structures became commonplace, further widening the rift that separated them from normal citizens. During a particularly horrifying event known as the Firebreather Uprising, hundreds of civilian cottages were set ablaze in a single night. This act of aggression prompted overwhelming retaliation. Rising warlords and their engineers sought to wrest any remaining control away from the elementalists, and war terrorized the land. Magi wielded their specialized elemental energies as harrowing bolts and beams, while wooden war-machines rumbled overland slinging great boulders or explosives. Thousands died. The traces of shadows began to thrum in Javier's head, but he chose to ignore it. For someone had left messy notes scrawled upon the page. "Lost Runes" "Who did they worship?" "Unseen divinity of First Age" What?? Who wrote this?? Who was in this library before him? And what did this mean?! Obviously the dragons in the Second Age worshipped the Eleven...or Eight, in that time. What was this "unseen divinity"? And, he thought nervously, could one of those "Lost Runes" be...? The shadows began to fill his vision again. Struggling to breathe, he tried to throw himself out of the building before he lost control. He had always wanted to know things, did he not? The knowledge of the past was always like a sweet amber honey to him. But now. Did he really want to know, of the hidden Unknown God? Javier had made up his mind. Yes. He would. He would find It. Not just more knowledge of It, but the thing Itself. Thousands of tiny tendrils seemingly burrow into his skull, forming knowledge, all ready so close to the idea of it. The God would be dead by now, but Gods never die for real. he would find It. (Continue his adventures here!) (Continue his adventures here!) |
