Bernstrong grew up in a Nature clan. Its rules were strict, intense, and overtly violent, and that soon beat down the young dragon. He pleaded for his adopted sister, Calana, to help him leave, but she thrived under the clan's rules, and so saw no reason to run away. Until one of the clan's harshest bullies ripped his wing and stole his ability to fly.

The two soon started planning to leave alone, but luckily, Ripp and Annabelle went wandering into their territory. The siblings split from the clan into the now-Tribe, and Bernstrong soon took up the role as the Tribe's technological advisor.
