Biography

Uh-oh, looks like this red feather-poof wandered a little too far from his home lair (#206951, Zeno123), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to the home lair, to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here, or to the hub if you don't want another dragon in return. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!

Kane
Traveling Salesman

Kane comes from a family of great wealth. Before he set off on his journey he had plenty of money, but this unfortunately did not last him nearly as long as he had hoped, as he was not used to living frugally. Without any money left but still wanting to travel Sornieth, he found a job as a travelling salesman for a small Water Flight furniture company, called Seafloor Treasures. The shop's owner, Murphy, is looking to get more exposure outside of their little corner of the ocean and increase business.

Travel Log:

Volrin
Kane grumbled miserably. He felt like he could just scream, maybe cry from the frustration. Months of travel with hardly a penny to his name had led to Kane racking up a decent chunk of debt, to the point where he had to take pause in a travellers' rest hub just to pick up menial jobs and clear his name. He just wasn't used to living like this! He was born into wealth, he shouldn't have to live like this!

And the whole "travelling salesman" thing wasn't panning out, either. Weeks had gone by since he was contracted and half a dozen lairs had come and gone, each with decent populations of dragons. And not a single one of them was interested in furniture. He felt like a failure. He just felt miserable. At this point he was desperate to make a sale, so desperate to make money no matter what he'd have to do. He made a stop at the local Trading Post, hoping that there were enough dragons there for him to find at least one potential buyer.

...

A lime green Fae swapping some treasure for snacks at a roasted cricket stand turned Kane down. "Sorry, I'm just not really in the furniture market right now," she piped, waving a claw at him dismissively.

A soft purple Gaoler showed some interest in his offer, at least until Kane flipped out his catalogue and the potential buyer's eyes bulged at the prices. "So sorry, but my clan just got together about a week ago! We're all pretty strapped for cash at the moment," he admitted bashfully, feeling somewhat guilty. He could tell that Kane seemed to be in quite the bind.

A rusty red Guardian hauling a cart of goods guffawed loudly, humiliating Kane in front of any other potential customers. "Me? Seriously? You must be real desperate to make a sale, pipsqueak. I'm a big guy, and I don't think there's a furniture company out there that makes Guardian-sized chairs."

...

Afternoon progressed into evening, and evening dwindled down into the violet hues of twilight as Kane sat back on his haunches and fought back tears. Another day gone, and not a penny made. Where did he go so wrong, and why was his luck punishing him so terribly? He was honestly starting to consider giving up on his travels, and just returning home to his family in the hopes that they wouldn't be mad at him for losing so much of their wealth; but there was still the problem of his contract. He probably wouldn't get out of his job with Seafloor Treasures so easily... not to mention, he still wanted to be a traveller! He just wasn't prepared for all the hardships that came with it.

A crystal-blue Skydancer had spent most of her day at the same Trading Post as Kane, hovering around an alchemist's cauldron and the utterly fragrant brew it contained. She had overheard bits and pieces of Kane's plight, but had mostly kept to herself and her studies. She wasn't the most sociable dragon, after all. But the more she listened to him, sensing his growing desperation through her antennae, the more she began to realize that this might be a fantastic opportunity for her.

A few flasks of the repugnant brew in hand, Tango plodded over to the despairing Coatl and introduced herself as a local alchemist, quite famous in the area for her potions and other creations. She seemed quite kind and charming, and Kane quickly found himself spilling his situation to her. His financial bind, his utterly unsuccessful efforts as a travelling salesman, and the fact that he felt as though he was trapped in this contract. The Skydancer nodded in understanding, pondering this dilemma.

"I think I have a way to help you," Tango said, affirming.

"Really?!" Kane gasped, jumping up and ruffling his feathers in excitement.

"Yes! But shh, keep it down. This deal is gonna be kept a secret between you and me," Tango responded, in a hushed whisper, "I want you to take some of these potions here with you, and sell them to other dragons in the clans that you go to. Record the results of each potion, and pass the data back along to me whenever you're in the area. You can keep whatever money you make, to pay off your debt and then some!"

"Hmm, does that mean another contract?" Kane hummed nervously, wringing the furniture catalogue in his claws, "I dunno if I can. I'm already in pretty hot water with Seafloor Treasures as it is."

"Oh no, you don't need to worry about any contracts," Tango laughed, "I don't believe in them! The way I see it is, if you make off with my potions, I can always just brew up some more. They certainly didn't take much, just some muck and some slime... and on the other hand, if you keep your promise, I get my results and you get the money you need -- a happy ending for both of us."

Kane nodded solemnly, mulling over the deal for a bit. Finally, he spoke; "I think I'm gonna take you up on this deal, Tango. But before I do... what exactly do these potions do, anyways? What kind of chemicals exactly am I gonna be selling to other dragons?"

Tango chuckled discreetly, a small reverb that rumbled in the back of her throat. "I'm not sure," she told him, "that's what you're collecting data for, silly! These could be medicinal, they could be health potions -- hell, they could even be cosmetic. Some dragons say that alchemy is a science, but I know that it is an art, and that the best art is spontaneous. Not even I know what I've created, not yet.

"Speaking of..." the Skydancer said, handing a heavy satchel of potions and alchemy supplies to the apprehensive Kane and unlatching one of the potions from its buckle, "I'll make you another deal. I'll pay you for one of these potions right here and now, if you'll drink one yourself. I'd get some immediate results, and you could feel less guilty about selling these potions in other clans, since you'd have tested one of them yourself!"

Kane took the potion tentatively, and held it to his maw. It was cloying and viscous, thick and repulsive in its smell. It still fizzled and bubbled faintly as if it was boiling, even though it had been off the heat of the cauldron for quite some time. He felt bile rise in his throat at the mere thought of consuming this rancid stuff...

...but still, Kane was desperate for the cash. If he'd have to be this alchemist's guinea pig to make money for his travels, well, so be it. He held his breath and chugged the slimy contents of the vial, feeling like he had just swallowed a mouthful of live slugs. It took great effort on his part just to keep the potion down. Tango laughed in delight, and without a moment's hesitation fished a small pouch of treasure out of her own satchel.

"No immediate results, so that's disappointing..." she grumbled a little, handing the jingling pouch to Kane, "but still -- a deal is a deal. Here is your payment. And if that potion does anything to you later on, make sure to record the results and let me know, okay?"

Tango turned her back on Kane then, waving a claw at him as if she was shooing him away. "Well, you ought to get going," she said, "those potions won't sell themselves. I have some work to get back to at my lair, so I'm heading off too." She spread her shimmering, jewel-like wings and took to the sky without so much as a goodbye, leaving the Coatl to his thoughts.

Kane's stomach roiled miserably. He felt like he could be sick. "What have I gotten myself into...?" He despaired.

Zeno123
After Kane left Tango and the Trading Post behind him, he traveled to a few other clans. There were still no buyers for any of the furniture but he did manage to sell a few of the potions. He decided to head back to the Travelers Rest Hub thinking that in the large crowds that gathered in the area, there had to be someone wanting to buy furniture, however, he had failed to take into account that those crowds were mostly travelers themselves who couldn't lug around claw-crafted designer chairs or king sized bed frames.

Instead of selling anything Kane had gotten robbed of the precious few cents he had made selling Tango's potions. In the attack his catalog had gotten destroyed as well, so just as miserable and as broke as the day he was first hired, he trudged himself back to Seafloor Treasures to ask for a new catalog. This was also about the same time his claws started glowing, probably because of whatever was in that potion Tango had had him drink was finally starting to kick in.

His stop at Seafloor Treasures went just about as well as he expected. Murphy, his boss, ranted the entire time about Kane's inability to make a sale. The only good thing that came out of his visit was that he saw a poster up for a few free self defense classes which he took so that he, hopefully at least, won't get robbed again.

Blacknovelist (Novalis)
It was while Kane was visiting the Trading Post once more that he encountered a cheerful veilspun, wandering the stalls with a cart in tow.

"Hello," Kane said. "May I interest you in some furniture? Straight from Seafloor Treasures!"

"...Oh, me?" they said after a moment, looking up from the fruits they'd been studying. "No, thank you, I couldn't. I travel too much for the expense to be worth it, usually." They hold up an apple. "I'm just here for groceries, I'm afraid."

He winced. "Ah. Alright then."

"Hang on." The larger dragon stops him before he can go far. Quickly they pay for their produce, shoving it hastily in the cart before they rattle after him. "I do know a place you could maybe give selling a shot, if you're having a hard time?"

"Really?!" He perked up, then hesitated -- the memory of Tango was bright in his mind, and while that encounter hadn't exactly been bad, it was strange enough to give him pause. "What kind of place is it?"

"It's just my clan's marketplace, no worries!" They laughed. "Or at least, my temporary clan's marketplace? The market of the place I'm staying. Novalis. They get lots of traffic and lots of travelers passing through, and all sorts of people are moving in and out. I'm sure there's gotta be at least one person who'll need whatever you've got in there." A massive claw taps at his catalogue a few times.

Kane sized up his options. On one hand, the Trading Post was a known place with a huge amount of foot traffic, but it also had a lot of competition. This other market sounded tempting, but he knew so little about it. Was the risk worthwhile?

Well, it could hardly be any worse than his current situation, right?

He told the gaoler as much and they beamed. "Great! I've just got to finish here, and I'll show you the way right after if you want to wait or tag along."

In the end, Kane followed the dragon ("Treedancer, but you can call me Dancer. Most do.") back. Together they ventured, over rivers and through caves -- Kane's own new fighting skills came in handy once or twice, though Dancer was no slouch themselves -- and soon enough they came across the clan. Though small, the number of dragons passing in and out was kind of impressive, and after a quick introduction and sum-up of the clan's policies -- he'd just need to help out with clan chores to earn keep, no heavy rent necessary -- he set up shop, hope blooming in his chest for once. Maybe, this time, he'd actually have some good luck.

CelesticLeo
Kane's shop was a simple wooden stall with a huge sign reading Seafloor Treasures. He made sure to keep the wooden stall tidy and appealing. The catalog sat in the middle of the stands flat counter top with a fresh vase of flowers to the left. On a smaller wooden sign at the base of the stand wrote, "Ask me about my Potions!" Selling furniture would be what got him out of his contract, but maybe the dragons passing by would prefer potions?

After a couple of hours of waiting Kane's hope started to fade. No one had shown any real interest in his furniture. One dragon was going to buy a potion but decided it was not the best idea when Kane could not tell him what it did. Just as all hope seemed to fail an elegant but formal Nocturne appeared.

"Hello there, my name is unimportant but what is important is the furniture you seem to be selling. Do you have anything with beautiful craftsmanship? I seem to be needing to buy an elegant chair for my lovely mate Alicia. She prefers hand-carved items." Kane stood in utter disbelief. Someone wants to finally buy his furniture! Kane spoke charmingly knowledgeable in response. All this time on the road had lead Kane to memorizing the whole catalog front to back.

"Ah yes kind sir, I have an elegant chair handcrafted by the owner himself. The wood is rich and dark with beautiful detailing. As you can see here on page 98. It's not a bad price for such a detailed piece of work! How do you feel about this?" The Nocturne ponder for a moment before his reply.

"I suppose this shall suffice. How long till I retire this piece of beautiful furniture?" Kane graves from his bag an order form.
"As soon as we get this filled out with the payment attached I will send it off and then they shall deliver it as quickly as their wings can fly!"

Hopefully, Kane's boss will be proud. He finally made a sell and to a shadowlings none the less! He ponders if he should stay here or try traveling out?

Koisticks
A long, treacherous travel through the chilly seas brought Kane to the shores of a coastside clan among the Frigid Floes known as the Glacial Shallows. The bright shine of the lighthouse's rays were a welcome sight after such a long way. And to his relief, the clan seemed eager to help him settle in.

"Aaah, visitors? What an unusual sight indeed!" The snowy Tundra that became known to him simply as Fourteen chirped as she helped tie off his boat. The winds outside were cuttingly cold! Even an ice dragon like herself was bundled up tight. Kane himself felt chilled to the bone.

"Come, come. I'm sure you're freezing your dear wings off. Let's get you settled in." She lead him down into the winding ice caverns, it was surprisingly warm as they reached the lower underground chambers where most of the clan called home. It was bustling with life and activity! Large, round tables where dragons sat around feasting, swords and shields cluttered about where they sat. A tight-knit group.

"Apologies for the intrusion. . .I'm a travelling potion seller. My ship got caught up in the rocky waters." Kane dipped his head, he felt as if he were walking into a family reunion here. It was clear they were all more than well acquainted with one another. He'd meant to set out for the nearest trading post a good few miles from here.

"Nonsense! Make yourself at home. We don't have too many merchants passing by here. I'm sure Clement would be delighted to hear of your alchemist endeavors! Most passerbys we get through here are hardy training warriors." Fourteen laughed, delighted by the change in company. A warrior's clan.

He hadn't intended to stay too long. Just wait out the storm, perhaps make a sale or two of his potions to this Clement. But, the welcoming, homey aura of the place kept him far beyond the couple days of blizzard-like conditions. He found romance with a fellow passerby named Carmen. She was there to learn the fighting ways of the clan. They raised gorgeous children here, that flew the nest on their own quests. He blended into daily clan life, supplying Clement with the odd potions he'd come to sell, as well as re-igniting some of his old carpentry skills around the base.

How long had it been, that he'd stayed here? Months, or hours? It was hard to say, this place was a second family to him in many ways. But it wasn't his only family. As Carmen and his children moved onward in life he felt a longing, a tugging in his heart.

He had another home he needed to return to. Kane hadn't said much as he packed his things for a final time. "Will we ever see you again?" The question from the Tundra behind him took him off guard. He intended to leave without much fuss but. . .he gave them a warm smile.

"Sorry. It is about time I head home. To my true home. Perhaps. . .we can stay in touch." He smiled it was bittersweet. This clan had been a part of daily life for him for some time. But he had other places he had to go.

"Take care. Here. . ." Fourteen carefully tied the goggles around his head. A new addition to his looks. "A little something to keep the blizzard out of your eyes. And something to remember us by." The clan had slowly gathered around the docks. Many misty-eyed to see him take his leave, some enthusiastically cheering on his future explorations.

Kane tried his best to keep dry eyes as he slid the goggles over them and boarded the little boat. Homeward bound.

Zeno123
After having been gone for so long when he returned he was met with an angry looking Murphy who scolded him for not checking in for so long and came close to firing him. Rather than having him go back out on the road right away, Murphy decided to have Kane help him out in around the shop. For the next several months he helped Murphy clean the shop, and selling the furniture in-store with Murphy giving him tips on how to make sales.

After a while, Murphy finally had Kane go back on the road, visiting the nearby cities and having him promote Seafloor Treasures closer to home. When Kane retuned from his third of these trips a young, bright dragon named Seraphina greeted him.

"You must be Mr. Kane! I have been told all about you from Murphy. If you don't know me I am Seraphina Avaris City's travel marketer!" The fae said quickly.

"I see, that is very nice." Murphy said politely trying to move around her.

Seraphina moved to fly alongside Kane. "See I was hoping when you start to take longer trips again that you would carry some of these pamphlets with you." She pulled a large stack out of her bag and handed them to Kane before he could respond. "To help promote our great city! Thank you!" She said flying away before he could respond.

Kane sighed, staring at the pamphlets before putting them into his bag alongside the catalogue for Seafloor Treasures. He supposed Seraphina was right about one thing, it had been too long since he had left this part of Sornieth. It was time to get back on the road.

Fantivity
Kane had a nest with a dragon named Cruella she left as soon as they hatched leaving Kane to attempt to raise his kids alone. All but one of his kids left, Trinket his coatl daughter found her perfect place in the clan as a alchemist and scholar.

Surprisingly Kanes potion induced glowing claws are hereditary Trinket has glowing claws as well just a different color. A incident while he wasn’t paying attention happened, his daughter Trinket drank one of the potions leaving her eyes to look weird.

Kane insists she’s beautiful with her eyes even if most males keep away because they creep them out. Kanes last parting words to his daughter before leaving to travel again was “you can be with anything you wanna be ,don’t lose hope your better than them.” Then he hugged her before flying off.
