A New Dawn
Part 1
The Young Hatchling opened his eyes to a wrecked lair. The sharp smell of burning wood and sand-swept debris was the first smell that hit his nose. He wrinkled his nose and cried. Hours passed until the young hatchling knew he was truly alone. He decided at that moment he would not die. He was a fighter and he would fight for his life. Years passed and the hatchling grew into a young strong dragon. The ruins provided him with enough shelter and the local cacti and beetles were all he needed to eat.
The first time he saw a dragon, was one that looked just like him. Only, this one was dead. He saw it's skull and bones along with many others when he first left the ruins. There other bones too, bones of bird-like creatures with sharp weapons and clothes. They flew over his camp occasionally, but the young dragon was no fool and he knew to hide when they came close.
As he grew he was able to glean information from passing dragons. His clan had been attacked by harpies, and he was the sole survivor. This saddened the young dragon when he realized that his family was the bones lying outside the ruined lair. He would not remain disheartened. He would drive out the evil monsters.
Finally, the day came. He had been training for his entire life and finally felt strong enough to take down the aggressors. The flock of harpies flying overhead didn't stand a chance when the determined young dragon took to the sky after them. When he was done and satisfied that none of the harpies would ever threaten his lair again he looked down to the ground below.
The bright desert sun was barely visible behind the dark clouds. Bright flashes of blue struck out toward golden spires stretching high into the ground. Copper wires spun like snakes down these towers and onto the desert floor below. He finally understood what he had to do. He would rebuild his clan, and eventually, they would be part of the great machine on the horizon.
Then the dragon gave his first and last smile.
