Wendin

Wendin hatched with shriveled and brittle wings, like a butterfly fresh from the chrysalis. But unlike a butterfly, his wings cannot dry out in the sunshine. His wings are permanently disabled, and he will never be able to fly. His wing membrane is thin and coarse like tissue paper, and rips easily, and his wing muscles are weak and jelly-like, and tear easily, and his wing bones are brittle like crushed twigs, and snap easily. Even harnessing the wind to glide is too much for his fragile wings, and could damage them even further. Therefore, Wendin is ground-bound, and will be for all of his days.

Nevertheless, Wendin has found his place in the Clan of the Striking Bolt. He is a cartographer, who maps out places he will never get to see based on the reports of others. He spends most of his time drawing maps, or standing on the cliff’s edge, surveying the land in an attempt to draw better maps. His office is filled with ropes and low shelves to make maneuvering easier for him, at the cost of being an extremely minor inconvenience to visiting dragons. It’s a lonely life, but he’s happy with it.

His loneliness is eased by the company of his gentle and kind mate, Halina, who spends much of her time with Wendin. He is comforted by her presence, and enjoys having her around. He has plenty of friends, and knows he will never truly be alone as long as his clanmates are by his side. The clan understands his limits well, and are more than willing to work with him to accommodate his disability. In addition, the clan is understanding of how important his maps are to him, and are more than willing to describe the faraway places they’ve seen in great detail for Wendin’s benefit.
