While most Light dragons have an affinity for the sun, some few are born with an affinity for the moon instead. The Night Guard, they're sneeringly called. Since their magic only works reliably beneath its pale light than under the sunlight, most of them take up the way of the warrior, rather than that of the mage. Still, they make an impressive bodyguard for light dignitaries, royalty, and traveling scholars, just as Eclipse did, accompanying a group of her superiors on a diplomatic trip to the Ashfall Waste, where they hoped to make a strong alliance with the wealthy and powerful clan they visited. Eclipse's job was to stay in the background, to look intimidating and stern, and silently demonstrate the clan's might. She most certainly was not meant to fall in love after a single glimpse of the clan leader's most beautiful concubine. But really, was it any surprise that she should fall in love with a dragon who blazed as bright as the burning sun? And how could she refuse the benediction of the celestial body that had never before favored her with its grace, when the sun smiled and loved her back? She went to visit her that night, when her magic was at its strongest, and she could hide herself in the moonlight. She learned that her beloved's name was Corona, and they talked all night. She slipped away before the sun rose, but not before they'd formed a plan to run away together. The next night, she arrived with supplies packed, and the two fled together. Because of Eclipse's magic, they weren't discovered until the next morning, but when they were the clans' finest warriors and trackers were set on their tails, Eclipse's clan in fury that a mere guard would dare to insult their ally and disrupt their delicate negotiations, Corona's clan determined that the treasure who had been promised to their leader should not be stolen so easily. It was a long and difficult chase, but escape they did, crossing the ocean to the Southern Icefield where they claimed sanctuary with a small but welcoming clan led by a tundra and a fae, who hid and sheltered them. From there, the two of them set out on their own. Eclipse was determined to support the two of them, and as she was already a trained warrior, she hired herself out as a mercenary. Corona, a formidable if unconventional fighter, and skilled in her flight's magic, joined her love. The two of them quickly developed a fearsome reputation for the skill, ferocity, and honor with which they fought, as well as their tendency to defend young lovers in difficulty or those in unwanted marriages without ever asking for payment, and before long they were able to pick and choose their contracts. Some time later, with impressive reputations, a considerable amount of treasure saved from their various contracts, they made their way back to the clan that had sheltered them at the very beginning, offering their gold to its vaults and their skills to protect it in exchange for a permanent place there. They were welcomed in and told that they needed to pledge nothing but peace towards their fellow clan members (although some of their gold quietly made its way into the clan vaults anyway, as both of them felt that a debt ought to be repaid.) Now the two of them defend the clan and the lair, although the two will still occasionally travel elsewhere for a time to take mercenary jobs if they start to get bored or if the cause is right. Eclipse is dedicated to Light flight's pursuit of the truth in her own way. She would always rather hear a harsh truth than a comforting lie, and when she's given her word for something, she'd sooner die than go back on it. |
