Corona: Mercenary
Rings are round the sun and moon
And insides of the trees
And some are made by fire smiths
And some by exaltees.

When she was still young, other dragons would compliment Corona's parents on how pretty their hatchling would grow up to be. It soon became apparent that was an understatement, since as she grew into a young dragoness, Corona proved to be exceptionally beautiful. It wasn't long before a wealthy and influential clan bid for her hand, and upon approval, they took her into her clan to be trained as one of the clan leader's concubines. Corona was trained in a number of ways of providing beauty and pleasure, singing, dancing, elegant manipulation of her magic, choosing jewelry and silks to offset her beauty, everything down to brewing a perfect pot of tea and making pleasant conversation. On the day her training was completed, she was chosen to perform for the clan leader and a group of visiting Light flight diplomats. One of her teachers had told her to choose the person in the audience who admired her most, and dance only for them. The clan leader looked upon her with proprietary pride, the diplomats with desire or envy, but one of the guards, a wildclaw the color of moonlight, gazed at her with awestruck adoration, and it was for her that Corona danced. When that same guard, whose name she learned was Eclipse, came to visit her that night, Corona gladly let her in. They stayed up the entire night talking, and by the next morning, they had planned to flee together. Eclipse came again when the moon rose, she packed what she wanted to keep, and they ran. When their absence was discovered the next morning, they were fiercely pursued, but Eclipse and Corona swore to each other that they wouldn't allow themselves to be parted, and took the long, dangerous flight across the ocean to the sanctuary of the Southern Icefield. They stumbled exhausted upon the doorstep of a small, as yet unnamed clan, led by a tundra and a fae, where they were given hospitality and shelter. Once rested and recovered, the two of them thanked their hosts and set off to make their fortune. Eclipse, already a trained warrior, was willing to hire herself out as a mercenary to support them. Corona surprised her love with a demonstration of her own fighting prowess. Corona fought like a dancer, all speed and elegance, avoidance over parries and numerous swift strikes, interwoven with her deceptively delicate magic. She'd never been taught to fight, but she was a skilled and powerful mage, good at translating what she had been taught into a unique fighting style, and Eclipse gladly filled in the holes in her knowledge with sparring lessons. The two of them quickly developed a fearsome reputation for the skill, ferocity, and honor with which they fought, as well as their tendency to defend young lovers in difficulty or those in unwanted marriages without ever asking for payment, and before long they were able to pick and choose their contracts. Corona's own fire magic grew so powerful with practice that she is almost constantly wreathed in dancing flames and a fiery illusion which she crafted to make herself look fiercer. Few from her old clan would recognize her now, with what she calls her war face on. Some time later, with impressive reputations, a considerable amount of treasure saved from their various contracts, they made their way back to the clan that had sheltered them at the very beginning, offering their gold to its vaults and their skills to protect it in exchange for a permanent place there. They were welcomed in and told that they needed to pledge nothing but peace towards their fellow clan members (although some of their gold quietly made its way into the clan vaults anyway, as both of them felt that a debt ought to be repaid.) Now the two of them defend the clan and the lair, although the two will still occasionally travel elsewhere for a time to take mercenary jobs if they start to get bored or if the cause is right. Corona, still enjoys the finer things in life, and enjoys introducing Clan Lodestar to the luxuries she enjoyed when she still lived in the Ashfall Waste. She sometimes holds well-attended tea tastings or magical performances, but she still dances only for Eclipse. |
