I.
“I don’t show everyone around back here,” Sultan said with a shining smile.
“Of course,” Malik said warily. Shahzade just shrugged.
With a cackle, Sultan opened the stout wooden door, revealing an opulent chamber. Ruby-studded golden torches smoldered on the walls alongside red-gold tapestries. The floor sparkled with golden coins, sapphires and jewels. Doubloons, pearls, earrings, lamps, necklaces…
Sultan bowed low. “And this, I am slowly giving away. Well? Are you impressed?”
He could tell that these two other kings’ sons were.

II.
Sultan has always been a loner, which is strange, considering how often he was surrounded by others. Always spotted at parties—carousing, telling stories, gambling—no one knew that much about him. As a result, the tales of Sultan are mostly apocryphal and retold in whispers. A prominent one is that he fell in love with a beautiful duchess, a black Pearlcatcher with seductive red eyes.
However, she scorned him when she realized he wasn’t of noble birth.
And that is the other rumor—Sultan is not a Sultan at all. No one is sure how he accumulated his vast stores of wealth. Gambling is most often assumed. But there is a sneaky glint to his smile, his eyes, and foul play is not out of the question.

III.
“So, why are you giving it all away?” Malik asked, head cocked. The tavern table was spread with cerdae sparkle.
For the first time, the look in Sultan’s eyes grew distant. Shahzade made a note of it for his next poem.
“Because money can’t buy everything.”
