Biography

“You cannot know how frightened gods are of pain. There is nothing more foreign to them, and so nothing they ache more deeply to see.” - Madeline Miller, Circe
Rook
Rogue
OC Dragon

Rook is the name of a strange rogue that haunts Allixestr's territory deep in the Foxfire Bramble, a mangy tundra with long fangs and a cloak that hides them in the shadows. Their motives are unknown but they are certainly violent, and Rory believes they are responsible for the disappearances of several clanmates.

All are advised to avoid Rook at all costs, and any sightings of the strange tundra are to be reported to the clan's Guard at once. Though... strangely, those rare few who have reported interacting with Rook claim the being is not malicious, but these claims are unsubstantiated.

Name: a gregarious Eurasian crow with black plumage and a bare face, nesting in colonies in treetops

Rook is the only one who knows their story, and they keep their secrets close to their chest.

Rook was born many seasons ago when Sornieth was young and the gods had only recently been awoken from their slumber in the great Pillar. Their mother was a proud tundra named Corvid, a member of a clan living at the very edges of the Tangled Wood and close to the Scarred Wasteland. She'd had an affair with a handsome gaoler she met at the borders named Bran--a short-lived affair, but an affair nonetheless. She kept this secret from her clanmates, though, as her father, the clan leader, was strict about keeping relationships in the clan.

For a time, the two were happy, but Corvid noticed there was something... off about her mate. He was prone to fits of aggressive violence uncharacteristic of his breed (though to be fair, he'd never acted like any gaoler Corvid had ever met), and he never quite seemed all there. When she asked him about it, he would always brush her off. Eventually, she decided that these must just be quirks of his and accepted them as part of him. And, after many moons of living together in the borderlands, they had a clutch of eggs.

The eggs hatched on a sweltering summer day, and Corvid was overjoyed to be a new mother. Bran, however, did not seem as enthusiastic. He began spending less and less time with his family, often leaving for days at a time and coming home smelling of unfamiliar dragons. Eventually, Corvid had enough and she snapped at him. He snapped back, and the two fell into a vicious fight--one Corvid did not survive. Seemingly horrified at what he had done, Bran abandoned the two infant hatchlings and fled into the trees, leaving them to die.

Thankfully, the two hatchlings were found by a member of Corvid's old clan, who realized they must have been Corvid's young and brought them back to be raised by their proper family. She named the two hatchlings Raven and Rook, after their dark fur. The clan leader, Mink, rejected the hatchlings at first, vehemently blaming their existence for his daughter's disappearance, and declared they be abandoned in the wilderness to die. The healer of the clan, an old dragoness named Twistedfoot, intervened and insisted the younglings be allowed to stay. He relented after a lengthy argument, but he disowned the two hatchlings and insisted that they were a curse on the clan.

Still, despite Mink's misgivings, the hatchlings were allowed to stay and raised under the watchful eye of a sweet pair of dragons named Ashe and Mist. The two dragons loved their adopted hatchlings and raised them to the best of their ability, but as Rook and Raven grew up it was clear there was something strange about the two young tundras.

It was the most obvious with the young Rook. Their fur grew in patchy and short, completely unlike the thick coat a tundra was supposed to have. Also, their wings, always small for their age, were weak and underdeveloped, to the point they were unable to fly. Twistedfoot chalked it up to remnants of contagion from the Scarred Wasteland, as no magic nor medicine seemed able to help the young child. Thankfully, they didn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort.

Unfortunately, however, when Rook and Raven were juveniles, there was an incident. Another young juvenile, a bratty tundra named Myotis, had been teasing and bullying the pair for many moons. While Raven was determined to ignore Myotis, the insults got to young Rook, and one day they snapped and attacked Myotis. As Myotis was larger and older, she easily overpowered the other tundra and brutalized them, leaving them with a long scar from the corner of their mouth across their cheek and wings torn and bitten beyond repair. Both juveniles were punished harshly for the fight, though Myotis was never punished for bullying the siblings.

Twistedfoot determined that there was nothing that could be done for Rook's mangled wings, and for the young tundra's health she decided to remove them. With the help of magic, the procedure was thankfully painless and their recovery was swift, but no magic could heal the emotional wounds. Rook had long since accepted that they would never fly, but now they stood out from their clanmates even more. Myotis was far from the only bully that tormented the young tundra, and now they had only more material to work with.

After one particularly nasty bout of bullying, Rook fled from their clan and deep into the Tangled Wood, planning to run away from their clan and never come back. It was on this walk that they met a stranger, a gaoler who called himself Bran. He was nothing like any dragon they'd ever seen before, huge and imposing with pure black eyes and a grin too large for his face. He was friendly, though, despite his appearance, and he asked them what was wrong.

Rook explained what happened, and the stranger comforted them, letting them cry into his thick fur as he patted their back. The two talked for what felt to Rook like hours and Bran guided them back to their clan. When they arrived, they turned to thank him for helping them, only to find that he was gone. Their clan welcomed them back with open wings, though they were reprimanded harshly by their grandfather for running away.

As Rook and Raven grew into adulthood, they were faced with the daunting task of picking up a trade to pursue so they may support the clan. Raven chose to be a merchant, and Rook decided to follow in their sister's pawsteps. They became the apprentices of the clan's merchant, Flama, and began to accompany her to the marketplace regularly.

It was on these trips that they met Soren and Tyto, a pair of bogsneak brothers from another clan. They were handsome and charismatic; Tyto was headstrong and blunt, whereas his brother Soren was softer and kinder. Though Flamae reminded them sternly that they shouldn't fraternize with dragons from other clans, it wasn't long before the young dragons became friends. From there, every time they went to the marketplace, Raven and Rook would seek out their new friends. If Flamae knew the real reason they were suddenly so enthusiastic in their training, she had the kindness not to say anything.

Soon enough, Raven and Tyto started a relationship, unbeknownst to anyone but Rook and Soren. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but Mink still strictly forbade any inter-clan relationships, and if Raven were to be caught she could face exile--or worse. Rook tried their best to convince their sister to end her relationship with Tyto before it was too late, but she refused to listen. Soren similarly tried to convince his brother, but he faced the same stubbornness.

Rook refused to give up, though. One day, they decided to follow their sister as she left for one of her secret meetings with Tyto, deep within the Forgotten Caves. When she realized they were there, the siblings argued, and the argument quickly escalated as Tyto got involved. To this day, Rook doesn't know how it happened, but before they knew it Raven was dead at their feet, having been shoved too hard against a wall. Rook was horrified and attacked Tyto in their grief, but the bogsneak easily overpowered them. He snapped Rook's neck and left them in the tunnel, later telling their clan that they were responsible for Raven's death.

An unknown amount of time later, Rook woke up. Their whole body ached something fierce and every movement they made only worsened the pain. For a moment they simply lay there, panting, until they noticed the gaoler standing over them. It was Bran!

Bran told them, voice warm, that he had saved them. That they were Shade-touched, and as a result they would never be able to die. The Shade would keep them alive to spread the disease. Just like him. It was then that they noticed the black aura about him, the way his whole body seemed to radiate malevolent energy. Horrified, Rook stumbled to their feet and backed away.

Then, their horror was replaced with anger. He had done this to them. They attacked Bran without mercy, tearing out his throat with fangs that were far too long for any tundra. Just as he said, though, he did not die, and he seemed to take no offense from their attempt on his life. Instead, he just laughed and told them that there was nothing to be done now, and their fate was sealed.

Besides, he added with a cruel smile, since they killed their sister, there was no place for them in the afterlife anyway. He did them a favor by afflicting them with the Shade. Rook felt suddenly nauseous and, without another word to Bran, fled the cave. Every movement was like fire through their body, but they pushed through the pain in their desperation to escape. Bran did not follow.

For a time, Rook just kept running, wondering just what they should do. They didn't want to spread the Shade, to condemn other dragons to their same fate. Would they have to avoid other dragons entirely to avoid this? Live life as a hermit?

Eventually, though, Rook had to stop running. They came to a stop at the edge of the Tangled Wood, their old homeland. It was then that an idea occurred to them--they had a second chance now, and they could get revenge for their sister's death.

They could hunt Tyto down and finish him.

Unfortunately, she didn't know where Tyto's clan was. True, he was a Shadow dragon, but he could be living anywhere! For a long time, Rook wandered the Tangled Wood, trying to find the bogsneak who took their sister from them. They never managed to find him.

Instead, they found a clan called Allixestr, deep within the Tangled Wood. They didn't quite know why, but they were entranced by the clan and spent several weeks just watching them go about their lives. Part of Rook longed to join the clan, but they knew with their status as a Shade-touched they would never be welcome. Instead, they decided to continue watching.

And so that's what they're doing to this day. Continuing to watch. What they're waiting for, even Rook doesn't know.

And if a few Allixestr dragons go missing now and then under Rook's careful gaze, well... a dragon has to eat. And the Shade has given Rook a peculiar hunger indeed, endless and forever unsatisfied except by the flesh of other dragons.

The Wanderer the Insubstantial Illusionist

16493.png
A few months into their wandering through the Tangled Wood, Rook found an Insubstantial Illusionist that seemed to be immediately curious about the strange tundra. It refused to leave Rook alone even when they snapped and growled at it, stubbornly following behind them as they wandered. Eventually, Rook began to accept its presence, and they nicknamed it The Wanderer.

The Wanderer is Rook's only friend and ally in the wilds of Sornieth, and though it remains passive most of the time, it will occasionally aid Rook in their hunts. It also uses its shadows to help Rook camouflage in the darkness, allowing them to stay hidden from other dragons and avoid any confrontations. Though Rook is loathe to admit it, they care deeply for the creature, and they would kill to protect it from others.
