.⟦ Coral & Diablo ⟧ |
┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Coral yawned widely as he got to his feet, arching his back to stretch his wings fully. As he folded them back into position, his left wing brushed against a familiar shape next to him on the branch where he’d been sleeping.
“Hey, watch where you’re putting those things,” Diablo grumbled, clearly annoyed at being disturbed from his morning preening. Coral laughed out an apology, but immediately proceeded to shake his entire body, sending bits of feather down floating in all directions. He looked to his brother for a reaction and laughed again at the icy glare on Diablo’s face. “C’mon Diablo, where should we go hunting today?” he queried, ignoring his brother’s sullen expression. “Oh, settle down,” Diablo sighed in response. “You know I won’t be done preening for at least another hour.” “But Diablo, I’m boooooored,” Coral whined. He wagged his long tail excitedly, forcing Diablo to stop preening in order to maintain his balance on their branch. “Well, go on then, I’m not your keeper,” his brother grunted unapologetically before resuming his morning ritual. Coral hated how Diablo insisted on preening his long, delicate plumes every morning. Their father had been a neat-freak like that too, and it drove Coral crazy. He took after his mother, full of an adventurous spirit that was never satisfied unless he was off hunting or exploring somewhere new. Deep down, Diablo was adventurous too, he was just better at hiding his enthusiasm. Coral leapt through the canopy of the gigantic tree they both sat in, chasing birds and insects to amuse himself while he waited. After what seemed like ages, Diablo finally called up to him that he was ready, and the two brothers took to the skies. It didn’t take them long to locate their favorite quarry: a flock of Spotted Goats. Without uttering a word to one another, the brothers worked in perfect unison, corralling the flock together and picking out a particularly old and sick goat as their target. They took down their intended prey quickly and efficiently, carrying their prize up to their favorite perch to enjoy together. Coral glanced over to his brother while he chewed. Despite his disagreeable facade, Diablo was Coral’s closest companion, and both of them had saved each other’s lives more times than he could count. Diablo looked back at his brother, a slight smile on his blood-stained maw. For all his complaining, he too was secretly grateful to have Coral by his side. They were each other’s only family-- now and forever. |
