Most dragons who find themselves trapped in the Runic Mountain Range are spirited away at particularly inopportune times, as if the force behind the magic is sentient and particularly delights in their suffering. Once at their frustration when they’re first waylaid, and doubly so when they despair in realization that they’ll never escape. But Meraki is an exception. It doesn’t seem like he was captured to be tormented by the Droste magics. Instead, he probably wound up in the Aequitas Clan simply as another way to torment Nagara.

Presumably, Nagara earned such punishment for his constant and futile attempts to escape the Runic mountains. He had earned a little bit of lenience with his merchant work, bringing sorely needed supplies back to his outside-deprived clanmates. And then immediately lost that grace by purchasing enchanted items that falsely promised to bind him to the free part of Sornieth instead of the things his clanmates wanted. As such, it should have come to no surprise to Nagara that when he stuffed a crumbling goblin into a sack, expecting that the Droste spell would pull it back to the Range with him so he could smuggle it back out and resell it later (a flawless plan), he instead got to keep a one hundred percent goblin-free sack.

As a bonus, the sack contained a free nocturne hatching! Nagara has no idea how Merkai managed to sneak into there, considering he tied it shut immediately after capturing the goblin. But Meraki did, and apparently he let the goblin escape while he did so. He also ate the rest of the contents of the sack, which was mostly a box full of Nagara’s lunch. (And a little bit of food set aside for whatever familiar he’d manage to capture.) Nagara didn't care about that, much. What he did care about was the other thing in the sack — his wallet. Meraki ate all of the gold coins out of it, and then the silver ones as well. And then once they made it back to the Runic Mountains and Meraki was freed, he complained about the silver ones not tasting as nice.

Nobody has managed to figure out who Meraki’s parents are or where he came from, and that’s not just because Nagara is one of the clan's two contacts with the outside world and he’s still spiteful about Meraki eating his money. (But he totally is.) Erigone did try to make up for Nagara’s slack on a couple of their excursions, but he eventually gave up, bringing a disappointing close to Plan “Get Meraki’s Parents Unwillingly Trapped in Here With Us”. Thus, Meraki was sent over to the hatchery and made a ward of Kavelyn and Nanshe.

Compared to other hatchlings the two have taken care of, Meraki is practically perfect. Sure, he likes to snack on a few coins whenever given the chance, but if you were going to buy food with that treasure anyways that’s just efficiency. If anything, he might be too normal. He doesn’t even get into fights with Ayrveti when she sets him on fire! Sure, he seems to be connected enough to Earth magic that, like a rock, he doesn’t care whether he’s on fire or not, but such docility could get him into trouble when he gets older. It also gets him dunked in the nearest container of water whenever Kavelyn sees him wandering around ablaze. Despite this, Ayrveti is still one of Meraki’s best friends. She can get up to her usual antics, and Meraki doesn’t have to do anything more than wander along behind her and enjoy watching the chaos. And also get set on fire again. That Meraki doesn’t react is simply proof to Ayrveti that she needs to add more fire.

Really, most of the time Meraki doesn’t do or say much. It’s not that he can't or doesn’t want to, but that he seems to be more interested in the way other dragons do things than the specific things they’re doing. Perhaps that’s why he likes Nanshe so much. The skydancer says and does many, many things, almost all of which are entirely pointless. It’s a nearly endless stream of odd behaviors for Meraki to watch in rapt curiosity. And then mimic those behaviors, being a nocturne and all. But being completely entertained by bobbing lanterns or ringing windchimes isn’t too unusual for a hatchling (unlike a grown Nanshe), so Kavelyn is confident he’ll grow out of it. Meraki has also mimicked Nanshe’s habit of eating particularly interesting-looking pebbles, but Kavelyn’s convinced himself that’s probably just an Earth dragon thing. (A poll of the local Earth dragons came back with a resounding “what, no, please take the rocks away from the child”.)

Somehow, a diet of metal and stone hasn’t had any adverse effects on Meraki. That doesn’t mean he can eat anything though, and even Nanshe knows to stop Meraki from gnawing on any of the radioactive crystals that are frequent throughout the Runic Mountains. Meraki has to go looking for new, less spicy flavours elsewhere. Such as spare runestones, lost keys, and if he’s feeling particularly brave, the metal part of a misplaced trowel. (A far, far more dangerous choice of snack than even the most unstable crystal.) Meraki still prefers actual food over regular stone, but that doesn’t stop him from eating any rock that looks interesting. For that reason the clan’s obelisks make sure to know exactly where he is at all times, and to avoid him. Nobody knows whether he’d nibble off the tip of an obelisk’s tail while they’re in stone form, but none of them want to find out.

Hunting for both interesting dragons to watch and tasty metal to snack on led Meraki to crawling through and exploring the lair’s ventilation. Somewhere even the bravest of adult dragons fear to go, due to apparently being the haunted battleground for a war between fire and ice-aligned ghosts. Or something like that. Meraki hasn’t found anything scary down there. He did find a workshop, and its resident fae who immediately dove into a pool of lava upon being discovered. After his pet snake had coaxed him out of the molten rock, Larimar quickly ushered his unexpected guest out of his workshop and back to the rest of the lair. His workshop wasn’t safe for children after all, what with all the lava laying around all over. Unfortunately for Larimar, Meraki remembered the route back to the workshop, and now shows up to watch him hammer away at his latest creations whenever he feels like it. Larimar got used to it. The excessive heat in the workshop doesn’t seem to bother Meraki, and as long as Larimar can trust his pet snake to make sure the hatchling doesn’t eat any red-hot metal, he simply watches and doesn’t cause the fae any trouble.

LUxj3AE.png Meraki doesn’t like that snake much, because it keeps preventing him from tasting the delicious molten iron. And also because when it chases him out of Larimar’s workshop, it doesn’t really care what parts of the ventilation he flees too. And while Meraki isn't afraid of most of the maze of vents, there’s no way he’s going to any of the parts that have odd music echoing from somewhere deep within them.

Not that some of the other places he’s ended up are much better. Such as the diabolical lair of the villian, Adder. He claims to take care of the Familiars, and hides behind the gorgeous artificial habitats that he builds for them to live in. But through the ventilation you can travel behind that facade, and so Meraki has seen that those wonderful habitats are merely holding cells before the Familiars are used for something much, much worse. It’s bad, awful, terrible, every synonym Meraki knows. Which is all he’s got, because Meraki doesn’t actually understand what Adder is doing. He’s still a hatchling, after all. But apparently no amount of shouting EVIL EVIL EVIL can convince any of the adult dragons to do anything about Adder. Also it attracts Adder’s personal crew of snakes to chase him around the lair for a while.

Whatever Adder is up to, it’s personal for Meraki. This is because, secretly, Meraki is a mimic. No, not a nocturne. A mimic mimic, one who is mimicking the mimics of dragonkind. He was the goblin in that sack, and after he realized that he’d been captured by a dragon he transformed into a member of his captor’s species for safety. (He is a child as far as mimics go though, that part isn’t fake.) If Adder ever found out, he’d disappear like the rest of those Familiars too. If the other members of the clan found out… Well, actually he might be fine. Some, like Nanshe, would still be his friend, and the rest probably wouldn’t care.

However, Meraki doesn’t mind if he has to stay a dragon forever. He’s been a nocturne long enough that he can do basically anything a real nocturne could do. Maybe more, if the panic whenever he tries to eat metal is any indication. And anyways, what a normal mimic does is sit around and watch others all day, hoping to be ignored. Meraki can still watch others all he wants as a nocturne, except now he isn’t ignored, and instead of being lonely dragons like Kavelyn or Nanshe will eventually find him — perhaps even bringing some snacks or a new toy.

He’s still going to eat Nanshe’s dangly jewellery instead of the actual food he’s been brought if he has the opportunity though. It’s good for mimics. Probably.
