"Did we do the right thing?" Marlowe asks quietly. The rain trickles down the stone roof of the shrine they sought shelter underneath. Kawataro stops his watch of the downpour, turning to face her.

"My head says no." He answers, ear twitching. "But my heart says yes."

He turns back out to watch the dirt path closest to them. Beyond the plip-plop of rain drops on the leaves and on the stone roof, there is silence in the green forest. Kawataro's ear twitches again as he watches, tense as a coiled spring. When he's satisfied that nothing is out on the path, he glances over at Marlowe.

Marlowe shifts from where she is sitting, careful to not disturb what she is holding. A baby, wrapped in a soft, purple blanket.

"We. We are not supposed to intervene in affairs, such as this." Kawataro sighs. He kneels down to be eye level with Marlowe and the baby. "We are caretakers of the Shrines, silent observers. But. How could I, how could we stand by and watch such an atrosity happen?"

Marlowe nods. She carefully brushes curly bangs out of the baby's face. The baby scrunches up his nose in his sleep at the touch but doesn't respond otherwise.

"I know, I know. I feel the same way." Marlowe looks to Kawataro. "But we cannot return to the temple, this would. I am not sure the others would understand. And I dare not lead them straight to the temple. I cannot imagine what kind of horror they would bring to that place of peace. "

Kawataro softly cups Marlowe's face in his hand. She leans into his touch, her face breaking into a small smile. "I know, my love. We will have to figure it out together."

He pauses. His eyes lazily drift across her face studying her features. Eventually his eyes trail down to the baby in her arms. "Have you thought of any names for him yet?" He murmurs.

Marlowe looks down at the baby, considering the question. "Atlus. After my father."

"Atlus it is then." Kawataro nods again. His ear twitches and he looks out towards the forest considering it. The rain has changed from a downpour to just a light sprinkle.

"Here my love, let us make a break for the next shrine while the storm is lighter." Kawataro helps Marlowe to her feet. He holds his dark green robe out to shelter both their heads as they run between the long fern fronds down the dirt path.
