Brejdalir’s life started much the same as Ragnir’s had, hatched in the Fortress of Ends in the nursery room, raised on tales of their duties. Brejdalir, however, had possessed the ‘extra’ something that the nursery attendant had been looking for, and thus she had been assigned to the Keepers. Keepers were always given additional training, as they needed to be resolute. No matter what a prisoner said or did, they couldn’t be released. It was up to the Keepers to contain the prisoners, and so their training was more stringent. Outsiders were not to be trusted, any dragon who was not an Ice dragon was always a potential ally of the Shade. Sometimes they could be unknowing allies of the Shade, but even an unknowing ally deserved to be locked up. Even so, as soon as Brejdallir saw Helvandr she knew something was wrong. No dragon touched by ice could ever succumb to the influence of the Shade. Much to Ragnir and Helvandr surprise, she was the one to actually bring her freedom up and eventually get permission to let the pearlcatcher leave the Fortress of Ends. As Ragnir decided to leave the Fortress with Hel, Brej was faced with a though decision. Love was not something Gaolers tended to spend time pining over. They were as utilitarian in matters of the heart as they were in other aspects of their lives, for the most part. Every so often there would be a Gaoler who wouldn’t be able to compartmentalize, and Brejdalir was unfortunately one of them. She loved Ragnir, she knew they would make strong offspring and even if they had his soft heart, they would be excellent Seekers, something their kind always needed. When he rejected her, explaining that he only saw her as a sister, she should have accepted that and moved on to the next suitable contender. Instead, Brejdalir followed the soft-hearted fool out into the world beyond their home, cursing Ragnir with every step. Unlike her friend, Brejdalir didn’t take to dragons outside of their flight. She barely took to any non-Gaolers, although a few had won her grudging respect, Helvandr and Solveig, mostly. As she had no prisoners to tend to while out of their day to day job and having a hard time doing things that aren't her call, she started to keep birds, magpies specifically. Several of the dragons were startled to see the change in the birds, however. They were thinner, quieter, not as inclined to sing. Several of them would actually huddle in the backs of their cage when Brejdalir appeared, not that she cared. Indeed, she seemed pleased, saying that it had taken her prisoners much longer to learn and so the birds were clearly more intelligent than any non-Ice dragon could hope to be. Every now and then, Ragnir, Solveig or Helvandr will find out Brejdallir is keeping birds again and set them free or give them to Taliha to care for, but sooner than later, the gaoler will find a new one and keep it in her private rooms. It was only when they threatened to jail her that these abuses stopped. Since then, Brejdallir is doing her best to care for two magpies, as her means of showing she's changed. Whether she has actually changed or is just trying to save face is a subject of heated debate around the Keep. Despite Ragnir’s insistence that his friend was getting better, the other dragons in the clan privately agreed that it would be quite a long time before Brejdalir changed at all. | x |

xxxxxxx“You were among them.” xxxxxxxBrejdalir’s voice carried with it a disgust. Her lip curled up into a sneer to reveal the glimmer of sharp teeth. When Ragnir did not speak, Brejdalir’s eyes narrowed with mounting agitation. xxxxxxx“You were among them, were you not?” She spat, the seething tone of her voice rendering it a low hiss. The repulsion in her evident by the rigidity in her posture. A betrayal mixed with disbelief. Her thick claws dug into the stone, scarring it with her brutal grip. Ragnir hesitated to answer, but obliged with a preceded sigh. xxxxxxx“It is no criminal act to observe them, Brejdalir. Your malice is unnecessary.” xxxxxxx“My supposed ‘malice’ comes with the knowledge we both received, but it is apparent only one of us cares to honour it,” Brejdalir chastised. Silence permeated between the two, under the cover of evening stillness and away from the light of the tavern, stood idle on uneven cobbles. Brejdalir casted her stern, unyielding gaze toward the passing chatter of staggering dragons. “...You observe wretched insects navigating a world in which they do not realise they are infecting.” xxxxxxxRagnir’s quietude bothered Brejdalir. The lingering tone remained upon her pursed lips and poised tongue. xxxxxxx“They are more than that,” Ragnir challenged Brejdalir, despite the soothing lull of his utterance. “Perhaps all we were taught...” xxxxxxxRagnir trailed off. Brejdalir bristled with tension. For a moment neither sought to speak. Brejdalir could not fathom the implication Ragnir put forward, that such Shade-aligned vermin could cast doubt on the wisdom of the ancient Gaolers in Ragnir’s mind. A portion of Brejdalir mourned the loss of Ragnir’s sensibilities. She did not understand him, nor his sincerity. His softhearted protest to see the good in those Brejdalir felt did not deserve. In the quiet of the night’s advance, Brejdalir willed herself to halt her attempts to sway Ragnir to reason. | x |
