On a warm winter night
by yours truly, non-native crappy English included
xxxxxxxIn that town, warm winter nights were always the foresight of strong blizzard storms. It was not different tonight, as Solveig closed the heavy oak door to shut out the falling snow and its promise of cold. From the window there was no sight of the silhouette of Hrafnshelgi, the beacons and mountains that oversaw that small village at its foothills. xxxxxxxShe sat by the few remaining embers on her fireplace, flapping her wings to strengthen them into a hearty fire. The kettle, the herbs and the heavy wool blanket all followed as she laid before the fireplace to defrost her feathers. Somewhere in town, Helvandr would be silent with her gaol companions, not bothered by the dropping temperature. xxxxxxxThe elders used to say the element was stronger in Sol than in Hel, but it often felt the other way around. The wintry scenery suited Helvandr in ways it didn’t favour Sol. She was stronger flying under snowstorms, her paws never burned against the snow and her mane never froze in droplets of ice. Whenever Solveig thought about her, wether now or when they were younger, Hel always seemed like she was well adapt to their surroundings, wether on the Frigid Floes or the Cloudscrape Crags. xxxxxxxThe kettle whistled as the smell of burnt tea leaves filled her cottage with mint and ginger. With just one sip, Solveig felt the dreadful cold melt away, as warmth filled her to the core. She sighed, almost moaned, as her legs stretched, only recoiling them when she felt the fire burn her soles a little. xxxxxxxOn a warm winter night, much like this one, Solveig had dared Hel to fly to the top of Hrafnshelgi, fetch one of the ceramic raven dolls from it’s altar, and bring it back. xxxxxxx“It was a joke.” – Sol thought, staring at the dancing flames. – “We were only playing, I couldn’t know she would be hit by that blizzard.” xxxxxxxOne of the logs creaked, breaking into three pieces as the embers whisked around the fireplace. xxxxxxx“Liar.” xxxxxxxShe envied Hel, her skills, her poise, her strength against an element that should be favouring Sol instead. Deep inside she knew that blizzard was coming, maybe she knew the pearlcatcher would be caught in the middle of it. xxxxxxx“Maybe,” – Sol curled up under her blanket, as guilty seeped in. “I wanted her to disappear and never come back.” xxxxxxxSee? Icewarden didn’t favour Hel so much He’d spare her from daring to face His wrath. See? Helvandr wasn’t that good of a flier; Sol was a better fit to the rank of Ice Representative. xxxxxxxGuilty brought the cold back, and she felt her bones ache. She stood up and removed the blanket, taking to the outdoors, far from her warm fire and her cosy cottage, as if she deserved to be punished for wishing upon Helvandr all the miseries she faced. Like it had been her fault Hel felt into the crags of the Fortress of Ends, to be trapped in one of the horrors from bedtime stories the elders used to tell them. xxxxxxxShe trekked through the blanket of snow, feeling her toes slowly freeze in pain as the cold seeped into her very core. She stopped before the birchwood door of Hel’s house and raised her hands to knock. xxxxxxxBut didn’t. She never did. She had no right to bother Hel during her resting hours. xxxxxxxSol stayed before that huge door until she felt it would be too dangerous to be outside. Until the warmth was gone and winter showed its true colours with the blizzard it had been promising since early afternoon. Even if ice favoured Sol, not even she could stand being out in its wrath. xxxxxxxThe white and grey birchwood matched Hel much like everything in the Southern Icefield. Even the blizzards and the snowstorms suited Hel’s hard nature. She was a child of Ice through and through. xxxxxxxBut Hel hated it, she hated living there, hated Sol, the gaols and everything they represented – and deep inside Solveig knew it was her fault that Helvandr was leaving. | x |
